With all there IEPs and their lies caused my Grand Daughter to lose 2 years of education. Between this program and that one. And there being more worried about money than doing what was right. With my Younger Grand Children I found their school site difficult to handle. Because of Family issues I was to all incenses purposes the decision maker concerning my Grand Children but the Principal would not make an effort to work with me because I didn't have a court order giving me Educational rights. That would have meant getting custody and at my age that was something I didn't want to do. Even when my Son-in-law the father of these children wrote a letter giving the school permission to talk to me they wouldn't. A very difficult district to work with think twice before registering your children

School Year 2010-2011…read more We moved in April and I have been trying to take care of this with your office since May. Your office was very harsh with me telling me my proof of residency I was able to print out online was not good enough- not letting me finish my sentences and discuss it and try to understand- but just saying "no" over and over again. I left that office crying. That is not a feeling I expect when dealing with a school office. Over the summer, I checked your website daily hoping for some information about when you would open and what I needed to do. To this day the website still says "Interdistrict Permit for Torrance residents- Information sheet- Coming soon!". I emailed you on Friday, August 13th to find out what date your office opened and you responded on Tuesday, August 17th and told me that you were open from M-F from 8:30-4:30 being closed for lunch from 2-3. I waited for my last piece of appropriate proof to come in the mail, and I showed up with my children on the morning of Friday, August 20th. There was a note on the door saying you were closed. On Monday August 23rd I brought all of my paperwork to you, which you still tried to tell me was not acceptable even though your office told me exactly what to bring, and you told me you needed to process my application and I could not leave with my release letter. I tried to discuss with you what my options were and you finally looked at me and offered to pull mine out and get it done ASAP. You told me I could pick up a copy so I could hand it over to RBUSD. I followed up with you the next day and you responded as if you did not know me with a blanket answer that the permits would be mailed out and I could not pick them up and you could not fax them. I have not received anything in the mail as of yet and I have missed registration for both kids on Wednesday August 25th. Today is Monday August 30th, and the kids start school tomorrow. They will be late to class because we missed registration and have to register at 9AM tomorrow. I cannot register them without the permits in my hand, and the problem is I only received a permit for ONE child from you in the mail on Friday and the RB school office received NOTHING. Later on August 30th: I showed up today to pick up a permit for my other son and you were so rude and didn't smile and didn't apologize for me not receiving it. You snapped your gum and mumbled something to your co-worker about the apartment number missing. You handed me the copy and I said Thank You and you said "uh huh". I have sent another email since asking- just so I could be properly prepared- the procedure for renewals. I got NO RESPONSE. I do not appreciate being treated like this and I personally think you should be doing a much better job. I do not agree with you working for the benefit of my children and think you should think about the way you treat people as well as represent the Torrance Unified School District.

The students and their families are very supportive and contribute a lot to make this school the best it is. There are 28-30 students per teacher per grade and only one teacher per grade. Basically, the children move from one grade to the next and grow up together. This type of environment creates a strong bond and friendship between the students.

I have witnessed a lot of unfairness in the way situations are handled, particularly involving students with special needs. From what I have observed, there seems to be very little patience, flexibility, or understanding for their individual needs, which has been deeply disappointing. A year ago, before the new administration, I would have wholeheartedly recommended this school. Today, I would encourage families to explore other options. I have also found it difficult to address concerns with the parish leadership. In my experience, the priest is rarely available, and when concerns are raised, he has supported the principal by saying, "I used to be a teacher, so I agree with her," rather than addressing the specific issues being brought forward. That response left me feeling that my concerns were not genuinely heard or considered.

She lacks the leadership experience and education to lead the school to its next chapter. This school also lacks instructor diversity. The school is led by all women that previously attended the school and now work there in order to get a discounted tuition and preferential treatment. Currently there are two male teachers. There is only one PE teacher and she a friend of the leadership team. Consequently they all live in a bubble. The academic curriculum has declined and is outdated. The principal refuses to implement curriculum to improve the technology and AI curriculum. There is only one computer teacher and the students meet once a week. They lack excellent foreign language, music and arts instructors. I would not recommend this school if you are looking for a quality Christian private school. Please do your research your child(s) education depends on it.

Fern Elementary has been a huge part of mine and my families lives. Countless precious memories have been made with staff, and the families of my kid's peers. School community is what you make of it. The teachers are wonderful and especially given the difficult few years we have all experienced, they have gone above and beyond for our kids. Mary and Angela in the front office are amazing! They are so helpful and friendly - a great resource to the parents, students and the PTA. Dr. Remland, Mr. Daugherty and Mr. Sam figured out how to bring energy and community back to Fern even while we were shut down during Covid and I highly recommend going back and checking out YouTube to see the wonderful spirit of those running the show at our great school: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8GTZ4JoFiS0BRpfRCQpxTg To those that have had a negative experience at Fern, there are unfortunately still many shortcomings in our public school system and I do not discount your experience nor invalidate the need for TUSD to listen and learn from marginalized voices and do better.

My daughter completed her first year this year and they both deeply love their school. We chose The Children's Place Montessori because of the wonderful environment, the small class size, the affordability, and most of all the total commitment to true Montessori learning, not just having a lot of pretty wooden furniture and saying you're a Montessori school. Children are allowed to explore and go at their own pace. Sometimes that means they go quickly through a subject (though still with a thorough understanding) and sometimes more slowly as time and interest provide. That opportunity makes a huge difference and takes a lot of care and attention in a classroom full of kids. We really did not want computers in the classroom when our son was in kindergarten and are even more glad they're not a part of his early elementary education. Homeschooling was not in the cards for our family, but I really feel like the approach to learning here is the next best thing for our family. This is not a business that also happens to be a school. It's first and foremost a dedicated place of guidance that serves the whole child. I'm so grateful we lucked into an open spot exactly when we needed it so many years ago and look forward to many more years as a part of this wonderful community.
