Charlotte Douglas International Airport - CLT

Last week, I flew out to Charlotte for a layover on the way back home from visiting family, and I…read moreflew American Airlines as usual. I arrived at concourse E, almost flew out of concourse A, and ended up flying out of concourse C. American Airlines has gates they typically use across concourses A through E. With the exception of one day once upon a time, when I was stranded overnight in Charlotte due to flight cancellations, I have always had a very positive experience at CLT Airport. After all, the unofficial slogan of the Charlotte Douglas International Airport is "The Difference is Charlotte." Unlike friends who absolutely hate flying, I enjoy the travel experience, especially when using some helpful tools like CLEAR, Global Entry/TSA Pre-Check, airport lounge membership, and airline status, most of which I was able to enjoy during my CLT visits. When checking in (during my rare travels where I start a journey in Charlotte), I was able to skip the check-in area if I didn't need to check bags (as I checked in online) on one of my trips, and then this most recent time, I checked in at the priority area for assistance and checking bags. I then used Global Entry and CLEAR to skip most of the line at Security while keeping my shoes on (thanks to an American Express Platinum card, which comes with credits for both). CLT has 13 open lounges and experiences: 2 American Airlines Admirals Clubs, plus a Provisions by Admirals Club, the Amex Centurion Lounge, The Club CLT, a Delta Sky Club, Gameway, 2 Minute Suites, and the USO Lounge, plus 2 Be Relax Spas (the Concourse A location accepts Priority Pass). Access generally comes in one of 4 ways: a premium or partner ticket, airline status, a lounge or credit card membership, or a paid day pass. I often have two hours for a layover, which is enough time to visit the Centurion Lounge and an Admirals Club, though it's also great to stop by Provisions by Admirals Club for a quick grab-and-go, where I end up with a bag of items to bring on my flight. The airport is known for its Southern rocking chairs (100 of them!). They also have the CLT Canine Crew, where you can meet and pet therapy dogs wearing special vests if you need to calm travel anxiety. They have an Interfaith Chapel open daily from 5 AM to midnight. They have live piano music in the main atrium; there are art and history exhibits around gates A21-A29 dedicated to the Wright Brothers, and a 15-foot bronze Queen Charlotte Statue. They also have 74 restaurants and 54 shops. You can visit https://www.cltairport.com/shop-dine-and-relax for more details about these locations. All in all, it's a great airport, and I do not have an issue with a layover here and there.

I STG it has been under construction since at least 2012 which was the first time I flew thru & before I moved here. It always says "'making improvements" but I have yet to see any AND half the time the water dispensers don't work and the moving walkways and escalators are out of service?!? WHY?! Also, they really need more departure boards imho for an airport this size these r weirdly lacking. The few things it has going for it are the staff r surprisingly nice & helpful (especially the pre-check sentinels for all the people that act like they literally just woke up and this is their first time in an airport and can also "not read good" ). This was especially true for a recent intl trip I returned from and we t thru customs here; it was like herding cats, but the staff were calm, courteous, and patient. The only issue was we had to wait almost an hr on our plane because we landed early and Customs didn't "open" until 1pm...I have never heard such nonsense in my life! The other things it doesn't suck at is easy access to the area for the prkg shuttles and decent signage (u would think this would be a given, but go to MIA and try figuring out how to not only exit but find the People Mover/train!). As someone who travels frequently & has been to thru every major airport in the US, CLT could already be "improved", but instead it's always seems to be "improving" for the worse.

PTI's slogan is "fly easy." It's accurate…read more I flew Delta roundtrip through Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) last week and everything was an absolute breeze. I love this airport because it's small, not crowded, and is very easy to get around. GSO is the airport code for PTI, since it's located in Greensboro, North Carolina. It serves the Piedmont Triad region of the state, consisting of Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem. The Triad is not to be confused with the Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill (which has its own airport too - RDU). PTI was the airport I grew up with in the 80s and 90s. Our family would regularly fly from here to visit extended family in Bangkok, Thailand. The trip would always consist of three legs because PTI is a smaller airport and we'd always have to connect to a bigger-city airport like Atlanta, Chicago O'Hare, Newark, or Washington Dulles for long-haul international flights. My parents still fly these same routes today (my mom is now a 2 Million Miler on United). Despite its name, PTI has never actually had scheduled commercial international flights. The "International" designation stems from its status as an official U.S. Customs & Border Protection Port of Entry, which handles international cargo, private jets, and occasional international charters. The airport consists of two concourses: 1. The North Concourse contains Gates 20-34 (15 gates) and is primarily used by Delta, United, Allegiant, and charters. 2. The South Concourse contains Gates 40-51 (12 gates) and is primarily used by American. The Main Terminal, outside security, on the Departures Level (upper level) is the most "modernized" section of the airport. I think it was last renovated and updated in 2011. It looks nice. The North Concourse, inside security, and the Arrivals Level (lower level), outside security, where baggage claim is, are mostly just as I remember them from 25+ years ago. Parts of PTI still have that throwback 80s/90s aesthetic to me, from the concourse carpets to the retro-looking and sometimes illuminated door panels and signs. So, this airport does hold some nostalgic and sentimental value for me, which is probably why I'm giving it five stars instead of four. Reasons why I might downgrade this airport to four stars are: (1) There are no airline lounges. (2) The bathrooms could be updated. My sister made a great point, though. Why do you need an airport lounge at an airport where there is no wait? As I wrote in my separate five-star review for the TSA Checkpoint at the North Concourse, the security process was fast and easy, and I'm not sure if it could have gone any better. And as I wrote in my review for Hertz, the car rental experience was a breeze too. It's just a short walk to and from the rental car lot, and it wasn't busy at all. If you have time to kill, the Main Terminal outside security is more interesting than post-security. It's worth a stroll. Outside, on both the Departures (upper) and Arrivals (lower) Levels, it also wasn't busy at all. There appeared to be plenty of both short-term and long-term paid parking, directly outside the doors. Finally, the luggage carts at PTI are free.

Food choice her are not the best and there is no Airport lounge though it looks like at one time they had a lounge available. Though they do have a Starbucks and one of the best places to sit awhile is an observation area located in theMain Terminal by the PGA Bar. This spot was a secret place that a TSA agent made us aware of. This agent was so friendly and helpful cannot thank her enough. We did have to go back out through security to reach this oasis but going back through TSA was so quick and easy. The airport also, had a lovely art exhibit in our terminal which was nice as well. Don't care to get stuck again but if I have to fly through this Airport I am onboard.

I will start with the destination, this being the Tri-Cities Airport. This airport is a kind of quad-state airport as it serves Tennessee obviously being in Tennessee, but it's also close to the state borders of Virginia, North Carolina, and Kentucky. Kind of like how my current home airport serves both Connecticut and Massachusetts. It's also a very small airport. My dad seems to like it and so I imagine I will see this airport again, but whether or not I agree with him still has yet to be determined. This airport has just one terminal with 7 gates. Of those 7, maybe like 4 get used. The planes they had me get in were way too small for my height as I am over 6-feet tall. It makes flight super hard to sit through if I happen to have a pinched nerve on my shoulder that day. Really, those are my big knocks on this airport. I do have plenty positives to say about this though. The airport staff is friendly. Even TSA don't seem like heartless evil jerks. Also, because it's so small, TSA is actually a breeze to get through here and you can navigate this place really easily because of how straightforward it is. The interior looks nice as it looks like it had been redone in recent years. It's also not a crowded place which is good. Baggage claim isn't too bad, but because of how small the airport is, you kind of have to guess where your luggage is coming from. Also, for a small airport, parking can get really overcrowded at times, but any least the parking staff was nice. Bathrooms were okay too. At the end of the day, I think a 3 is the right rating. Does enough to function, but it's not built for the bigger planes that I would need.
