I love it here! It has the feel of an older ice cream parlor, and I love their unique ice cream flavors! I've been going there for years. They have lots of gluten-free options. My favorite thing to get is a butterscotch Sunday with pecans, whipped cream, and a cherry. I've had it both with vanilla as the base and with butter pecan as the base. To walk in is like entering sweet dreamland!! Staff is nice and friendly. Every flavor imaginable. I want to try them because the have 14% butter fat. Butter pecan and chocolate almond. Way too many almonds made the ice cream crunchy and over powering. I did not find either one flavorful. Atmosphere was pleasant. Parking can be a challenge at peak times. Bit of a different review. My son requested to be a Rubik's cube for Halloween. And he requested it spin. Cue hours of planning, which included needing a cylinder for the spinning mechanism. On a whim, I contacted Heyn's with a crazy request to buy one of their gallon ice cream containers. They easily could have turned me down. Instead, after a lot of explaining, the manager made an accommodation for this project. The end result would not have been possible without them going above and beyond for a customer. This place is awesome in general, delivering unique and delicious ice cream, but this shows a level of customer care that many of the big chain stores are missing as they aren't caring for their staff and customers. Huge thank you and they have life-time customers and bragging rights to a spinning Rubik's cube costume. read more

Tried to capture all the flavors currently in the case- of course my OG favorite is the Monster Mash! Service was great and the girls helping us were super efficient and helpful. They let both me and my fiancé sample 2 different flavors before we made our decision! We decided on a waffle cone with two different flavored scoops. I believe the top scoop was turtle cheesecake and bottom was the monster mash. Limited seating inside but there is a park nearby where you can easily eat your ice cream! This place is very special to the Iowa city area and they serve such delicious and amazing ice cream. Be inside is pretty and feels like a home. Nothing extravagant or fancy, but I like how they have seats so that you can wait for your order while they work on it. Since they are a smaller business, they can sometimes have longer weights, but it's usually not longer than 15 minutes total between stepping in and leaving. The best ice cream place around! Even when the line is long, the employees are pros and the line moves pretty fast. They don't get frustrated if you want to try a couple samples so you can hopefully figure out which one you want more than the other. I usually get a child's double which equals out to about 1 1/2 regular scoops; that way I can get two flavors! My favorite combo is Praline and Coffee Oreo! Do it! Go there! After a few rounds of bowling in Cedar Rapids, we made a beeline out to this cute little North Liberty location just before closing. When we arrived, we were excited to find they were on extended hours presumably for the summer season. We weren't the only ones with a late-night ice cream craving as the place quickly filled behind us. There are several tables inside, but it was a gorgeous night so we found a spot on the patio next to some pup friends. We were each able to sample several flavors before making a decision, which is important because they have a zillion flavors! Several of which are yogurt or sherbet, many are also gluten free. They have several options to dress-up your dessert including banana splits, sundaes, root beer floats, and shakes. They also have to-go ice cream pints and pies for home. Everyone was pleased with their choices and the single scoop servings were generous. If you're gonna drive from CR for ice cream, this place is pretty worth it. read more

After seeing constant activity at Heyn's while regularly spending time at Penn Meadows park right across the street, I decided that I had to finally stop in. I've never been much of an ice cream enthusiast as an adult, but I wish I'd made my voyage over there months sooner because I might become an enthusiast after all. Great selection of flavors of ice cream, including seasonals. They also have options for those that eat gluten free, dairy free, or vegan. I tried the peach ice cream on my last trip and it was creamy and incredibly flavorful. Shoutout to how they're handling life during the pandemic. Heyn's is my happy place. Both locations are great and the service is always spectacular here. The girls are always so awesome and patient with my (slightly annoying) order. Every time I have ordered my twister, it has been made correctly and exactly how I have asked. The ice cream quality at Heyn's is like no other and that is why it is my favorite ice cream in Iowa. My personal favorite item at Heyn's is the monster cookie twister with reeses instead of MnMs.. if you are a peanut butter fanatic, then this is the ice cream for you. Fair warning though.. if you do ask for extra toppings, be prepared to have a twister packed full of them because they do not skimp. This cute location is down the street from Red's Alehouse, so we frequently visit it after dinners there. This place is the best. Like, best of the best. Why? Let's start with flavors. In addition to the classics, you have concoctions like monster cookie, blueberry cheesecake, and snickers. Heyn's in Iowa City is deep and it was always a little too far to travel, but our first world problem is no more as we're now a stones throw away from IC bliss! Taking over the space where a couple businesses have been over the past 5 years, they've got plenty of room to showcase their 20+ flavors (Get Chocoholic Delight!) as well as the cooler of stuff to take home. Good amount of seating and plenty of space for loitering while you decide on which flavor will grace your lips. Bright and inviting, it's the sort of place that makes you excited to hang out and to come back. Uh yep, Heyn's ice cream is quickly becoming my favorite ice cream shop in the area. Their selection can't be beat - soo many falvors! They have a ton of seating, including a really fun soda shop style bar at the back of the store, plus a kiddie table and chairs. My favorite detail though, is their location.
