The interior is immaculate: beautiful modern decor that isn't flashy, nor does it detract from the architecture of the building. Excellent service: Leo is an attentive and friendly host who goes to great lengths to look after the comfort of his guests. Good food: Breakfast is generous and hearty Whenever friends come to town, I recommend that they stay here rather than with me. I've got the room, but they'll be more comfortable and better looked after!

Dinner and the service was nothing short of excellent. The carrot and coriander soup was delicious, garlic mushrooms and a roasted vegie tart were memorable. David and Joyce had lamb, Bobby had halibut, I think I had salmon. The desserts were equally scrumptious. Sometimes a place of this nature will be too stiff and formal for our liking, making us feel out of place. We want to relax and enjoy our food, not feel we are on display to the ever so watching servers. Dunstanburgh had all the qualities of an upper class establishment but without the stiffness. We felt welcomed and right at home.

We were on the third level under the eaves and low ceilings but still enjoyed our spacious room. The bathroom was a large space remodeled and luxurious in proportions. I fully endorse this for a Melrose Bed and Breakfast. Check before booking if it matters, I do not think breakfast is served before 8:00 am. Helen was a most pleasant hostess.

The owners do not live on the premises so if there was an issue, which there wasn't, would have to done on telephone. I would certainly use again.

There was art all around and lovely blue china in the beautiful dining room. Altogether it was esthetically pleasing. While the room was spacious the bathroom may be politely called "cozy" with a tight shower. Our host might be termed "curt" or was merely a character, and did seem to want us out the door bright and early. So if you are a late starter you may wish to check on this directly before booking in here. One of my companions called breakfast "phenomenal." We certainly had the full range of choices for an English Breakfast.
