In general, I dislike eating lobster in a restaurant as it is typically a snobby affair and I have yet to master eating and enjoying a lobster without having it all over me. But Den Beer is super informal, it is like you go to your grammy's house to eat. The owner is 78 years old, she is a real gem: fierce but welcoming. The food itself is why I keep on coming here and keep on wanting to come back: the lobster is just DELICIOUS. I've tried several styles over the years and all are finger licking good. The lobsters are always super juicy and cooked to perfection, it would be hard to pick my favorite style as all of them are the bomb but maybe the grilled flambe with whiskey has a slight edge in my book. Large refrigerated cases faced the street with a variety of fresh fish, shellfish and premade seafood items. In the back the kitchen and food prep were visible and completed restaurant or to go orders were queued at its own counter (though staff would drop off at your table). Prices were quite reasonable comparing them to other restaurants in the more touristy streets. Also the cashier was very friendly with both locals and visitors. My favorite was the razor clams followed by the mussels and fish soup. Each was nicely seasoned and good size/ meaty for the shellfish. A separate bowl was also provided to hold all the empty shells. The WCs were located down a spiral staircase in the rear of the restaurant and was tiny. Overall a great start to my eating in Brussels.

I loved them both, but since I was not sure I would ever get to try the Dutch style in my life-time and despite it being a bucket list food, I was so enormously grateful. Even more grateful because it tasted amazing. I plowed through more than one I must admit. I might never get to try it again so I had to get more than one. Don't judge me. LOL. Anyway, the lady that helped me once I had one of the pickled and one of the cured ones was very patient and very kind. She seemed genuinely interested in what I thought and listened to me as I gushed like a fan boy over their products. I will never forget that and I was very appreciative. The place is pretty close to central, downtown Brussels and it was nice to just go to a table out in a courtyard and enjoy one of the favorite things I had on that trip. It was awesome.

We had made reservations for ten people, but our group arrived in smaller groups over a period of an hour. The Fish Market was very understanding and patient with us, and we happily enjoyed some wine and oysters during this time. When we were finally all together and had ordered, the food was quickly prepared and served. Moreover, the dishes were presented beautifully and in a grand fashion; the portions are not small, at all. I had the pleasure of enjoying the sole (zeetong), which was very delicious, simply serves with a cup of clarified butter. A perfect combination. The rest of the table enjoyed the mussels, the cold seafood platter, and a mixed grill. Everybody enjoyed their food very much, and it must be said that our group included an Australian top chef; she too was impressed by the quality of the food. One batch of mussels were unfortunately cold when they arrived to the table, but when we pointed this out, the host apologized and was happy to take it back and produce a new, fresh serving. The design and atmosphere of the restaurant is interesting; unlike other restaurants, the Fish Market doesn't care for dimly lit lights or red chairs. Rather, with the white tiles and industrial lamps, they have tried to make it look and feel like you are in the back-end shop of a fish monger. As eerie as that may sound, it isn't. Strangely enough, it makes for the perfect place to have some good quality seafood.
