Southern California Logistics Airport - The final fate of a Delta L-1011

For plane spotting, The SCLA (or in plane speak its simply called Victorville) is one of the more…read moreboth dull and exciting places to visit. The Southern California Logistics Airport is based on the former George Air Force Base which was active from 1941 to 1992. The airport has no commercial passenger service and is designed for business, military, and freight use. International cargo flights can land here as well due to its "foreign trade zone status". It is also home to several aerial firefighting units etc. and runway 17/35 at 15000 feet is the second largest public runway in the US. Following the grounding of 737 MAX's, Southwest elected to park their entire fleet here pending resolution of the software and flight safety issues that resulted in two crashes. What draws plane nuts to Victorville is the boneyard by and large. There is a large variety of mostly large aircraft that are either being stored (the hot dry climate is ideal) or being dismantled. Row after row of once proud airlines are lined up awaiting their fate's. Depending on how hard core you are you can make out the livery of current and often defunct airlines that have moved on. There are a few mysteries like the near new 787 parked and stored for more than a year. I could not get the tail numbers, but it may be an early production model that is too heavy for commercial use. Beyond the allure of seeing the planes there is not much else to do here. That being said, the city of Victorville has plenty of options for gas and eating, but unless there is a specific aviation event or your waiting for a particular plane to arrive, there is not much else going on at SCLA.

Got a crew car and allowed to bring back 2 days layer with no fees at all after topping off the tanks (14 gallons). Overall, would have gladly paid fees considering the priority of making it home for Thanksgiving but very grateful for the sense priority the personnel placed in simply ensuring they could all help get my father and I home. Upon my return on Friday, the next crew was just as incredibly helpful. Kudos to management for setting up the right culture as the crew certainly emphasized the trickled down mindset of providing the best customer service. Without a doubt will recommend Million Air to friends and colleagues. Lastly, tower was extremely helpful while in the soup in moderate/severe turbulence. The last minute diversion couldn't of gone better after totally knowing tower shifted their entire focus to providing the upmost assistance possible. Thank you all! -Serg

I remember the days when it used to be super expensive to fly out of ONT in comparison to LAX. Thankful it's no longer as outrageous. First, this airport is 10 minutes from my house. There is NOTHING 10 minutes from LAX but traffic. For an early morning flights, I can leave my house 30 minutes before boarding time and get there and through TSA with time to give. Flying is already one of the worst ways to me to spend a day so being able to fly out of Ontario makes it a little bit more manageable. I usually fly Southwest or United so I only go to those terminals. Every once in a while, I'll fly out American. So far all the terminals that I use are pretty easy to get in and get out. Sometimes, in the evening, if someone is picking you up, it can take a while to get through but again in comparison to LA, it is a breeze. I love LA and I do a lot in LA but I would rather fly out of Ontario.

This small airport is so convenient and low stress. We park in lot 5 and take the shuttle that drops off right in front of our terminal. Easy peasy! Terminal 4 is clean and maintained nicely. Because it's a small airport there are less dining options. Sitting here waiting to board our flight, I see a brewery, Subway, Dunkin' Donuts, and I know further down is more fast food options. I really don't care for airport dining anyway, which is so pricey and usually not that great. Thumbs up for Ontario airport!

Since we'd be there for only a few days we flew Southwest Airlines instead. Daughter #1 lives in the Valley. I live in OC so we both decided to take Amtrak and meet at Hollywood Burbank Airport. I usually fly out of Long Beach LBX or John Wayne Airport SNA in Irvine. Hollywood Burbank Airport was like a step back in time. The one story sprawling terminal reminded me of a California mission. The interior appeared to be original circa 1950s. No long walk to check-in or to TSA check point. Shorter walk to the gate. What a throwback. What convenience. Upon our return, baggage claim boasts 2 turnstiles. And yet the airport, on a Tuesday and again on Thursday, was a buzz with foot traffic. Masses of travelers coming and going. We enjoyed the intimacy of the airport. And have definitely added it to our preferred list of airports for local travel.

Excluding my hour-long wait to check my bag because I'm pretty sure that's an airline issue and not the airport's responsibility... Hiring such rude staff has to be intentional, given how consistent and common they were. While getting through security I asked if anything had to be taken out of my backpack and they said "If you're in that line, then yes", with no instruction on what to actually separate. About 5 minutes later, just before my backpack went through the machine, they told me to separate my electronics and take off my sweatshirt (and at this point, there weren't any convenient bins because the line had obviously moved). The next TSA agent told my partner he forgot to remove a Nintendo Switch, and threw his backpack (with the Switch still inside it) back onto the conveyer line (literally, threw it a few feet). There were other experiences before and after that, but the short version is this: the airport is just a small building of inconsiderate workers doing the absolute minimum who condescend you and your property.
