Pizzeria Del Ponte was recommended to us by our host at the Agriturismo we were staying in. She…read moresuggested it was a place most popular with locals, especially labourers who lived in the village Orvieto Scalo. This isn't your traditional restaurant with table service, and because it serves locals almost exclusively, we were going to have to manage with our rudimentary Italian. But our host was reassuring: "You're seasoned travelers so you'll do just fine!" she said. There's no question this is a bit of an unusual spot - in a good way. It truly fits in with the idea of a "Hole in the Wall". Once one enters through the door there's really just enough room for a few people to stand in front of the counter and place their orders. With our rudimentary Italian, which had improved slightly during our time in Italy, and some hand gestures, we were introduced to what was available and placed our orders. There were a couple of pizza options, stuffed bread, flatbreads, and arancini among other options. The food you order is then placed on a scale, and priced by weight - no wonder labourers love the place! Outside there's a number of sheltered picnic tables where everyone happily fills their bellies. We always treasure places like this when we find them, a chance to experience the everyday culture of Orvieto Scalo. Pizza: We ordered the margarita pizza. It had a nice thin crust that held up well, with a well-balanced tomato sauce, thinly sliced tomatoes and a great mozzarella. It was tempting to order another slice. Flat bread: Tomatoes and lettuce with chunks of moist canned tuna (yes, canned tuna - but really good quality and delicious), a little bit of mayo, and some arugula, all sitting on a lovely fluffy bread. We enjoyed this so much we started making this at home upon our return to Canada. Simple and tasty.
