My experience at the Bath Hertz was unpleasant, to say the least. I arrived in the early afternoon and walked up to the desk where, after a few minutes, a man came out to talk to me. He started speaking to me in what was clearly a pre-ordained "spiel." At one point, I explained that I wanted to add the collision/damage waiver insurance to my charge and he interrupted me, brusquely, "I will get to that, ma'am, in a minute." O.K He then told me that Hertz had "upgraded" me to a bigger car. Well, I actually didn't want a bigger car. I knew how narrow English streets could be, but he didn't stop to listen to me. Then, when he was showing me how to use the car, I realized for the first time that it was a manual shift car -- something I had not expected. When I expressed my surprise, he said, "You didn't ask for an automatic." Well, I have absolutely no recollection of being asked whether I wanted an automatic on the website when I ordered the car. If I had been asked, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would have requested an automatic. Maybe I just totally missed the prompt asking me for that choice. No matter who was at fault for that choice, what I found particularly galling was that no one made any attempt to help me get a different car. The employee treated me like I was an idiot for asking for an automatic and made no gesture at all toward helping me out. The whole experience was very unpleasant. I can only be glad that I agreed to pay 55 pounds a day for the collision/damage waiver with no deductible . ... which I guess was the point, wasn't it? (And, I tried to contact Hertz directly, but after typing in my entire story, I got an error message saying my complaint had not been registered.) read more
