Both cars have steering assist which can't be turned off. Tiago calls it ELK or emergency lane keep. Go figure. These cars are trying to kill the driver. In New Zealand there are mostly 2 lane narrow roads. So when you ease to the edge of the road to avoid an oncoming big rig the car thinks "emergency" and ELK steers you into the big rig. Whoever bought these Chinese cars at Eurocar should be fired! I asked for a non Chinese car but Eurocar could not provide one. Eurocar must only have only Chinese cars. Needless to say IM NEVER RENTING FROM EUROCAR AGAIN. I could hear the car using lane lane assist and Xi Jinping saying... I'm watching you. If you can't stay between lines you will be sent reeducation camp.

We had to stand in line for over 2 hours (!!) to pick up an already reserved car. They know exactly how many customers they are going to expect on any given day at any given time, especially as customers are required to inform Europcar about which exact ferry they take and when they arrive. Car drop off at the Wellington terminal was equally chaotic. By the way, the extreme waiting times can't be explained by the peak season alone, as all other rental car companies (Avis, Budget, Pegasus and Hertz) have no or very small lines in the front of their kiosks. No more Europcar for me!

That said, the shuttle is very prompt and the cars are not far away. The service was very warm and friendly, with an emphasis on making sure that us out of towners understood the rules of the Kiwi roads before taking off. And the rental price is very reasonable (a huge plus given that petrol is very, very expensive). Bonus mention -- if you're like us and you plan on dropping off your car to take the Blue Ridge Ferry back to the north island, Apex allows you to drop of your car at the ferry terminal, which is enormously convenient.

Last time we came to New Zealand, we hired a camper van from another vehicle hire company and…read moreoriginally, we thought to use the same company however, it turned out there were quite a few hidden costs - such as additional fees for secondary drivers, for example. So, we did a quick search and found a few hire companies that offered cheaper hire in the Wellington area and settled on Omega. We got the car we wanted to rent (not the cheapest at $25 a day, but close to it) and there were no hidden charges. Utterly delighted, and even when we returned the car minus a hub cap - which we expected to pay for - it was waived as the caps hadn't been tied on as they should. Happy days - and happy customers, who were then dropped off at their destination of choice (I believe Omega may also offer a pick up service of a similar ilk too).
