Interestingly our Australian drivers licences were all we needed, not our International licences. We found the Wellington Downtown vehicle pick up office no problems although the Wakefield Street site did not seem to appear on the website. It was right in town so was conveniently close to our hotel. The staff was helpful and explained everything clearly. There wasn't a GPS fitted in the vehicle but fortunately we had brought our own Garmin unit from Australia so we stuck that unit to the windscreen and off we went. We would have found it difficult to navigate around the cities in particular without the GPS as the NZ signage is not as good as it is in Australia or the UK where we found the GPS a godsend. The vehicle was a Nissan Pathfinder, just right for four people and four suitcases. The vehicle was great, no problems at all in around 2,000 kilometres. Fuel economy was fine, particularly as we drove carefully considering the windy roads in NZ and the rain on many days. We were surprised at how expensive the fuel was, well over $2.00 a litre! And more expensive in the city than out in the country side. The vehicle was dropped off in Downtown Auckland at Khyber Pass Road. The drop off site was a small yard that we nearly missed. The single staff member at the small office was friendly and efficient, so no problems from start to finish. I would use Thrifty again.

They do pick ups and drop offs at airports, although those especially need to be planned--they are often only there until 6pm or so. I had to get to the airport several hours earlier than I would otherwise have done in order to return the car. The staff were all friendly and helpful. On the North Island the car was much better car than the one on the South Island (the latter squeaked and made some other troubling noises, but there were no actual mechanical problems). We picked it up in Wellington and dropped it at the Auckland airport. The Auckland Airport location was very easy. A bit further to the terminal than I would have wanted to walk, but doable; in any event, I made sure I got there in time to take the shuttle. Note that the Wellington store is in a spot that frankly seemed bizarre--it was way out of town, sort of by the Interislander Ferry terminal (nowhere near the Bluebridge one, which is downtown), but not even that close. To get there from downtown you have to run across a highway and over train tracks and across overpasses (and pay the troll some gold and say the magic words)--it was pretty horrendous getting there. I don't know if they do pick-ups from the Interislander terminal, but I'd definitely recommend asking. If I had to get there from downtown again, I'd absolutely take a taxi. The staff at both places were friendly and the transactions were easy. The cars were pretty dumpy, standard 4-door sedans, but they drove fine. The staff pushed the full insurance, which is to the company's benefit, and didn't end up being necessary, but it brought nice peace of mind, and even with it the cost was much less than through other, bigger companies, so it was still a good deal. I don't think they had an offer to pre-pay for gas, so it was either fill it yourself or pay a lot on the back-end.

Good News Story - Buyer Beware:…read more In October I hired a car from Ace Rental Cars New Zealand and returned it without a scratch. The assessor/staff member at the time looked around the car and raised no concern. Several days later they decided to charge us $467.93 on the false accusation that I dented the pane of the car near the petrol cap. When we asked for proof, they sent us a photo that was dated 2 days after I had left NZ. Well fortunately my financial institution helped me stand up against the bullies and made them to refund my money back. I guess it pays to video record/take photos of rental cars when you return them, and also pays to not shop with Ace Rental Cars New Zealand.
