Hertford County is named for Francis Seymour-Conway, who was the 1st Marquess of Hertford and who was Lord of the Bedchamber to George II and George III of Great Britain. This is the sixth to serve as the Hertford County Courthouse and is in a modern design. Completed between 2013 and 2015, this three-story red brick and concrete structure replaced the aging 1956 courthouse and now serves as the judicial hub for the 6th Judicial District, which includes Bertie, Halifax, and Northampton counties.
The courthouse features a commanding central portico with four white columns rising to a pediment at the third story. The wings of the building maintain a flat roofline, while the landscaped grounds offer a sense of openness and civic dignity. Inside, the courthouse houses three courtrooms and supports both Superior and District Court functions.
There is plenty of parking though the absence of shade was noticeable on this hot August afternoon.
