We typically would do their Christmas Train, and rarely got back to Lancaster in the warmer months. As soon as I planned my latest summer trip, I knew it had to be on the itinerary. This place has it all from gigantic slides to gold mining sluice areas to a mini kids village that mine couldn't get enough of from the mini vet office to the drive in theater. It was really impressive. From here, you can make your way up the hill where there is a restaurant, a coffee kiosk with a delicious coconut water cold brew (wild!), and plenty of shaded sections with swinging chairs. You'll find paintball, basketball, skee ball, a pedal cart for the family, launching devices. I mean, there is a lot! The place is large so it never felt overly crowded. Come with water bottles. Even with the shaded sections it gets hot. They have water fountains by the bathrooms.

We started out hanging on the wall the first night. We were really happy when we made 1 full lap on the rink. Then managed to stay out for one full song. Now, we go Friday, Saturday and Sunday. When my body is feeling well, I don't want to get off the rink. It's our happy place together. We've had our kids and grandkids come out, friends that come out, because I don't think any of them thought we would want to keep going. Now we can't wait for Friday to get here so we can start our weekend at Overlook. The wood floors are great and the rink is large. What we love the most is the people that work there and the people that come in to skate. It feels like family. The smiles, the waves and how are you? We are always amazed at the kids that make sure to say hi every time they see us. Th DJ's are great, will play a nice mix of music, of course us older girls love rock and roll. Live organ music is our favorite, it's just wonderful. We just wanted to get back into skating and now we've added a family.

So when I saw a family friendly grand opening for Snapology on a weekend I had my granddaughter I was eager to check it out. Going in the place was packed and had met the limit of people the fire department would allow. I was ready to leave and come back but after seeing all the cool play stations my granddaughter was excited to play. Fortunately I decided to wait till a few people left and only waited a few minutes. During the wait I still had no idea what/how this business operated and it looked like just a room with different play stations so I took the wait as an opportunity to ask questions and find out exactly what they do. From what I learned Snapology is a number of things. The majority of the play stations are based on building; whether that be with Legos, Lincoln Logs, Erector sets, Duplex, etc. They host building workshops for older kids to use these materials to build complex subjects. They also offer hours of drop off/free play for kids 5 and up, and free play for kids under 5 with the parents present. This service is $8 hour/per child and does have limited times/hours. Additionally they offer day camps and preschool, host birthday parties, and as time goes on will probably add more services and special events. So when it was our turn to go in and play my granddaughter ran to the Lego Friends table. These certainly aren't the Lego's I grew up with! I thought they were too advanced for a four year old as they have itty bitty pieces and lots of tiny components but she loved it. There's tiny people and you can change their heads, hair, etc....as well as tiny animals, pieces to build houses, playgrounds, pools....I had to literally drag her away from that station to check out what else was offered. There was also a kiddle pool full of bigger piece Legos, erector sets for older kids, a room featuring remote control cars, a racetrack for your Lego cars to race down, a train table and so much more. A smaller area separated by (so cool!) HUGE Lego block walls was centered more towards toddlers with a dress up area, play kitchen, puzzles, Melissa & Doug toys, a huge dollhouse, and role playing toys. While this area was more in her age group she seemed bored with it and kept gravitating towards the Friends Lego station. Throughout the building staff were there to supervisor and assist. There are several tables in the back for parents to sit and relax and a few low poufs in the play area to supervisor your children. They also had buckets for toys that were dirty or came in contact with a child's mouth for cleaning. Overall we loved it and have made plans to come back. Somethings I thought they could do better; the poufs are difficult for older people to get up from. I would have loved to see higher seating throughout for the parents, as well as more hooks for coats/purses as there were only a few. Lockers would be a good alternative. I was surprised there weren't any Little People playsets for the little ones, although I think the suggested age of play for the "toddler area" would be age 4 and up. Also more classes and preschool classes available at night for working parents as everything is geared towards parents that stay home, as well as more "free" play hours. Otherwise a unique business concept that I'm happy to patronize.

Most of the activities offered don't require lines, the kids can pretty much go up and play on them (i.e. The playgrounds, hay stacks, sandboxes, corn boxes, etc.) When we left my son STILL wasn't ready to go and probably could've played for hours more. Nothing here was haunted or scary at all. Very age appropriate and friendly atmosphere. My son loved it so much he wanted to go back the next day!

I'd passed it during a different Lancaster adventure last summer, made a mental note that I wanted to come back and then...didn't. Fast forward to an early August Thursday afternoon when my adventure schedule finally brought me back to the area with some time to spare. FINALLY! Let's go see what's inside this place! I stopped in around 1:45pm and I'm pretty sure I was the only visitor in the entire museum. Honestly? I didn't hate it! Having the place almost entirely to myself meant I could wander around, open drawers, stare at things for entirely too long and explore everything at my own pace without feeling like I was holding anyone up. The woman at the front desk was super helpful, getting me situated with my ticket and explaining the general lay of the land before sending me off to explore. Parking was easy for me, too. I found plenty of street parking and nearby lots, although I could see availability varying depending on the day, time and whatever else might be happening in the neighborhood. The main level was my first stop and definitely felt geared more toward families with younger children. There were lots of hands-on activity stations, interactive exhibits and live critters to check out. I especially liked seeing some of the artwork kids had created displayed throughout the museum. It's obvious that this isn't supposed to be a "stand quietly and stare at things behind glass" kind of museum for kiddos. They actually get to interact, explore and DO things. Then I headed downstairs to the Cabinet Museum. And THAT'S when things got really interesting for me. I opened the door and actually stopped for a second to take it all in. Floor-to-ceiling wooden cabinets with glass fronts and backs filled the room, displaying hundreds of preserved and taxidermied specimens. It had this wonderfully old-school natural history museum feeling that I absolutely loved. There was SO much to look at! Toward the back were displays filled with rocks, minerals and gems, but my favorite part of the entire museum was the Curiosity Cabinet. This double-sided cabinet has drawer after drawer that you can pull open to discover specimens underneath plexiglass. Bugs, bats, starfish, coral and all kinds of other fascinating little pieces of the natural world were hiding inside. What made it even cooler was the question posed on the cabinet asking visitors to think about what was the SAME about the objects on opposite sides and what was DIFFERENT. Suddenly I wasn't just opening drawers to see what weird little treasure was hiding inside. I was comparing things, looking more closely and thinking about why the specimens had been grouped together. Apparently I am exactly the kind of adult who can be entertained for an unreasonable amount of time by a cabinet full of mysterious drawers. Noted! Before leaving, I headed upstairs to the third floor, which was primarily an art gallery during my visit. There were works displayed along the walls, including pieces available for purchase, along with a large community space that looked like it could accommodate parties, classes and other gatherings. My biggest adventure-planning failure of the day? THE PLANETARIUM. I knew they had one, but because I was working the North Museum into an already-packed Lancaster Adventure Day, my timing didn't line up with the next planetarium show. I peeked inside and immediately wished I'd planned that part better because it looked really cool. PRO TIP: If the planetarium is something you want to experience, don't do what I did. Check the show schedule BEFORE you plan your visit and build your arrival time around it. Future Me will absolutely be doing this because now I have unfinished planetarium business. All in all, the North Museum of Nature and Science was a really enjoyable way to spend part of an afternoon. Is it an enormous museum that's going to take you an entire day to explore? Nope. I spent a relatively short amount of time wandering around and felt like I'd gotten a good look at most of what was there. But that's also part of what makes it such an easy addition to a Lancaster adventure. If you've got kids who love hands-on activities and animals, I could see them having a blast here. If you're an adult wandering around by yourself like me, head downstairs, start opening drawers and prepare to unleash your inner curious 8-year-old. I'm glad I finally made good on the mental note I made last summer and stopped to explore. The North Museum is clearly a place that cares about curiosity, education and giving its community opportunities to experience science in an approachable way. And someday...I'm coming back for that planetarium!
