Great and easy camping experience. The staff (Larry) was awesome. He was so helpful, so quick to answer questions, and seemed to genuinely enjoy his job and the island. No wood fires here which is a bummer. But it's understandable. Had a great experience and will be back for the location, the ease, and I'll hope to see Larry whenever I come.

This was my first time coming to this campsite and honestly i will always be booking this campsite. Regina the ranger most friendly person you'll meet, every morning we went down to her little ranger shop and said good morning while we got ice cream, some supplies and ice! The campground is so well kept! The showers run off quarters and the water is warm!! The bathrooms are clean! The campground is only 1.2 mile away from avalon so you can easily hike down or take the bus down there! We had some visits from the deer, and a cat, also the foxes!! Everyone here is very friendly as well, we left our stuff open and no one even bothered it and just left. But everyone as they pass by always say good morning and talk about if we saw deers or anything!! It's such a great campground, I highly recommend coming here to camp, best experience you'll have!

We had a great time at Hermit Gulch. It was our first time camping in Catalina and everything went well. Bathrooms were clean and rangers were very helpful. Ranger Regina was the best. There were charging stations by the vending machines and every site comes with a grill. Nature was beautiful.

Hated the customer service, loved the experience, considering I am usually adverse to camping. When my friend Samia asked me if I wanted to join her and her cute 2 little ones to enjoy a birthday weekend for her son, I did not hesitate. First, because they are all cool people, and that is what you need when you go camping. Second, I had never been before to Catalina island, so I did not want to miss the experience in good company. Samia did the whole reservation process and I just needed to add the price of my bed on top of it. I don't understand this system of having to pay $50/night per cabana and on top of that $25 per bed (you bring your own sleeping bag). The cabana had already 6 beds, why just don't charge a fix price and that is it? I was trying for days to add my name to the reservation and the phone answering was horrible and asking me to pay to do so, so I decided that no way, I will do via email. No one replied (similar experience as another Yelper comments below). Then, I desisted and the day I arrived with my friend and her kids to the campground I was treated like if I wanted to sneak for free. On the good side, the place is fantastic, great location only 1.5 miles from Avalon. Clean showers and toilets and good spacing between cabanas and tents. Fresh smells of nature and silent people (actually, too silent!). We did not have any plans, other than 'unstructured fun' for the kids. So some suggestions for you if you want to go on the cheap and teach your children that most important than 'paid activities' is quality time with beloved ones and let the creativity flow with whatever you have in hand. Here the list of some things we tried while at this camping: Creating funny toys out of figs, berries, flowers and leaves; doing yoga poses in a cool meditation circle; having a deluxe camping experience with fun mom (and crazy fake auntie) eating sushi and drinking frapuccinos; talking to strangers and listen to their stories; share food, ideas and hugs; singing all together; the gift of speaking foreign languages to them; open mindedness; henna creations with felt tip pens; deer watching at night; listening to birds; learning about different trees, among other things. We had table and benches conveniently located outside our cabana. Very pleasant camping experience, we moved around with a rental golf cart.

The trail attached to the campground is an amazing hike! Very beautiful views of the island. At the top, you can see both sides. Not for the beginners but not fully intermediate either. Heading out by 10am ish and you will get in the mountain shade for roughy 30-40% of the hike. Nice for the warm days. No boulders or benches to sit and rest if needed, will need to set on the ground or side of the hill. Adventure suggestion: Walk from town to the trail head or take the bus for about $2. Hike about a quarter of a mile past the 2mile marker and on the left there is a nice spot to sit, meditate an take in the sights. Then make your way to the top of the trail and there is no benches but a shaded stone wall to sit and eat some lunch. Take it all in, it's beautiful up there. Then take the road to the left will lead you to another split, stay left. This will take you through the Garden to Sky hike and out of the gardens dropping you off at the bus stop.

Stayed in tent cabin #4 which had pros and cons. It doesn't have a "deck/patio" and there are no large trees for shade BUT it is one of the most secluded spots and my husband liked that he didn't have to bend over to walk inside. We would pick spot #4 again. Part of the reservation includes a stove and a lantern and they provide propane for each which was nice. We enjoyed the visiting deer and foxes and since we saw both during the day were not scared when hearing the rustling leaves of animals nearby at night. The bathrooms and the showers were decent, definitely thankful they were available. Ashley, the ranger/host, was friendly and we look forward to a return visit to Catalina soon!

I stayed here Labor Day weekend for tent camping! Of course I checked out this Yelp page beforehand to get some tips for the campgrounds which I fully appreciated. Now I hope to add my own insight. So, since I don't plan to camp here again for awhile, I should let you in on the secret(?) that ~the~ best campsite is Site 29!!! Reserve this one if you can!! It's the furthest away from the road and taxi dropoff, so it can be frustrating if you have to lug all your stuff, but it's well worth it. This site is much larger than the other sites. I think it's because it's at the end and it's not big enough to make into 2 separate sites. There's also a lot of shade relative to the other sites, which generally don't have much. This of course changes depending on the time of day. Site 29 also seems to be more separated from the other sites, whereas the other sites seem to be stacked on one another. The ranger was very helpful. The bathrooms were pretty clean and well-stocked the whole time, which is impressive since it was such a busy weekend. The shuttle is now $2 exact change (I saw previous reviews say it was $1). I appreciate that there are covered trash cans scattered amongst the sites so we don't all have to lug our trash to a big smelly dumpster. The ranger said that AT&T and Verizon have service at the campground. My friends have Sprint and they did not have service. Ok that's all I can think of for now. Have fun camping here! :)

Ask the Community - Hermit Gulch Campground

Is there a communal kitchen with supplies to cook or should I bring my own stove, pots, and dishes?

Hello Charly H., we recommend bringing your own cooking utensils, pots/pans, and stove. You will have a charcoal BBQ at your camp site, and we sell charcoal and propane.

Do the food boxes have locks or the capability to lock?

Hi Madison, the food lockers at each site do not lock. Hermit Gulch Campground does have coin-operated lockers. We rent lockers in Two Harbors as well.

If you bring your bike with you to the campsite, is there anywhere for you to store it while you are sleeping so it doesn't get stolen?

No, just put it in your tent or bring a bike lock. No one really bothered our stuff besides the animals at night.

A lot of people recommend site #1 which is a cool site because it's in its own secluded cove, but it's very rocky there and views of the water are limited. We were there in early January and witnessed hundreds of dolphins diving and splashing in the kelp forests off shore. I have never seen anything like it. You will want to get a locker of water and wood for each day you are there. So two days, two lockers. Be sure to stop at the office in Two Harbors to get the lock codes for those lockers before you set out. Very special. I have also posted this in my review of the Trans-Catalina Trail, but be forewarned that if you want to take the trail to Parsons from Two Harbors, which goes over the mountains, it's VERY difficult and steep and not for anyone of below average fitness. I would never say no to this place. I was very impressed with the food, one night it was spaghetti with garlic bread and the next night was tacos and burritos, you would never know what you would get! but always expect something good. Now talk about the cabins, the cabins were actually really nice, 4 bunk beds, that fit my cabin group perfectly. Next to the bathrooms, the showers were really nice and warm for a deserted island but make sure when you are in the bathrooms you make sure you leave nothing in there, because my friend left her brand new expensive hat in the bathroom, and next time she saw it it was in the toilet. They do have a lost and found but just make sure you don't lose anything. But try not to just leave your stuff in the bathroom but even at your cabins there's a lot of wild animals out there, when i was there i saw a lot of deer and also when i went on a 5 mile hike up on a huge hill we saw a rattle snake, foxes, and even bison. We also went snorkeling and it was so cool and amazing to the all the fish I saw a lot of garibaldi, and I even got to tough one it was kind of difficult but very, very cool. Garibaldi fish are named after the 19th-century Italian general, Giuseppe Garibaldi, whose followers were famous for wearing bright orange shirts. This is a fitting tribute to the fish's brilliant orange-red coloration and its fiery, territorial nature. tide pools were super duper fun. My class got to walk in the tide pools and see fish and a lot of crabs. but don't make the mistake of wearing adidas while walking in the tide pools. I definitely recommend crocs, water shoes, or booties. especially for when you are going in the water, this was one of my least favorite things at all, you had to walk on a bunch of rocks and it was clear so you could see all the rocks but still hurt a lot. Also one of my favorite things was kayaking. We kayaked more than 2 miles, 1.4 miles to our stopping point and obviously 1.4 miles back. For kayaking I would definitely recommend wearing shorts, a bathing suit and a lot of sunscreen like for real I got very sunburnt there so just make sure you were sunscreen.

The food is delicious, prepared from scratch by hand, and it's amazing the quality they consistently produce for groups of 200 or 250, including their fresh-baked bread and famous cinnamon rolls. I highly recommend this camp for groups. Even a weekend-getaway or a midweek conference will be enhanced by the incredible setting and hospitality, and it always makes the hour-long boat ride across the channel well worth it.

We didn't know what to expect from the botanical gardens and we loved it. We walked up to the memorial which was really interesting. There are plaques that explain the history of the memorial to Wrigley. As we walked back down we took all the various trails throughout the garden and some some interesting plants, insects and ended at the little amphitheater where we watched a couple of the films they have on the island and the gardens. I have read that others found the gardens to be boring and they only spent a short time. Everyone is different, and the time you spend is dependent on your interests. We took the 10:15 am shuttle and came back at 11:45 am. We found that to be plenty of time, but not too much time, it worked out well for us. It was fun! We also booked our shuttle up to the Airport in the Sky for a hike and lunch through the conservancy. It was great. Our driver was so friendly and explained so much about Catalina's backcountry.

We went to Catalina to do a bike packing trip accross the island. I was naively thinking we would…read moreget information in addition to the bike permits at the conservancy. But no, this is mostly just another overpriced gift shop. They don't really have much information, no informative displays, maps or handouts. there are some flimsy flyers for $11.95 plus tax each and a subpar map for $5 or 6. The employees are not knowledgeable or helpful. They just want you to do everything online. Which is a joke given that many people won't have cell coverage in most parts of the island and even if you had coverage eventually on a multi-day camping trip the phone's battery will fail. And if we do everything online then what's the point of this physical location? Or of the employees? Also, I contacted the conservancy before my trip and never got a response. This island is so amazing, what a shame the conservancy can't do a better job sharing information.
