I friend of mine, who is a member of the Bristol Council's gym group, gave me a free pass to go to…read morethe Horfield Leisure Centre. I fancied going for a swim and had been warned against the Bristol South Swimming Pool so thought I'd give the Horfield option a try. I was really impressed, a nice big pool, with good changing facilities (clean showers!). After my swim I visited the gym which was just lovely, well lovely in a gym kind of way. It had plenty of cardio options and a real good selection of weight training options. The classes on offer there are fantastic, if you can't find something you like, or at least don't hate the thought of, I'd be really surprised. The other good thing about these council run gyms is that you become a member of all of them, so you can mix it up a little bit and go to other pools or centres to keep you from getting bored with exercising!

For swimming, Horfield Leisure Centre is far better than most public pools I've been to…read more The main pool is big - 25-metres long, with eight lanes, and the only thing I am not keen on is the mixed sex changing rooms. Obviously there are private cubicles, but it still feels a bit weird legging it from the pool into a cubicle past blokes in Speedos. On the other hand, at least they're kept clean and they're quite spacious. I haven't tried any of the other leisure centre facilities myself, but the gym looks well-equipped with rows of new-looking cardio and weight machines, and there are several classes offering aerobics, yoga, spinning and other types of exercise. There are also squash courts and a big sports hall for team games such as 5-a-side. If you're not going to get to the gym regularly and get your money's worth, this looks like a good budget alternative to joining a private gym.

The Bristol Uni pool is just like every public pool you have been to. The off white floor tiles and…read morelocker lined walls immediately make you feel at home. This is combined with the smell of chorine that seeps into every orifice of your body so that even after a shower you still smell like Michael Phelps. However it is a little bit more special, it is big- at full stretch it is a little over 30 meters. However this does vary depending on the day, as they shorten it for kids to swim in the rest. They have six lanes for doing laps, however this is not open all day, as the pool is open for more recreational swimmers too. Does everything you might hope for and more!

Inside it's a decent public swimming pool, of a good length, usually relatively warm (sometimes by the end of a session in fact a little too warm). In my experience it's not massively crowded although sometimes at busy times there can be a little tension in the lanes. The changing room and shower facilities are fine and very clean. It basically caters to your every need without doing it superbly so. For £3.50 per swim, ya can't exactly complain though. One thing I strongly advise is to make sure the swimming pool is actually open to the public when you decide to go. The amount of times I've rocked up only to find that it's closed for schools or classes has been frustrating indeed.
