Every now and then in your camping travels you will make reservations somewhere just because it's…read morein a convenient location on your route and end up stumbling upon a true gem. That's what happened to us with Happy Acres! Originally we were scheduled to stay for one night but at the last minute had to change to four and the staff was wonderful about accommodating our request. Check in was a breeze with confirmation emails, informative texts leading up to our arrival and when we finally got there our registration packet was waiting for us by the office door. Our site (#71) was super easy to get to and was a pull through which was mostly level for our 33' trailer. I spoke with two staff members; one over the phone when I had to change my reservation (Matt?) and another (Sidney?) when I stopped by their very cute camp store to buy a couple of shirts and they were both extremely pleasant and polite. The grounds are beautifully maintained and there is also a pool and dog park on site. The only negative we found was the very loud, ever present road noise. Happy Acres is right alongside highway 69 which makes it super convenient to access but noisy. Luckily we were running out AC or fans every night which mostly drowned it out. We work remotely from our camper and both our Verizon and TMobile signals were very strong. However TMobile was the speed test winner regularly showing d/l speeds of 200+ mbps. We come to the Midwest every year or two and Happy Acres will definitely be on our list of campgrounds to revisit. We heard that they are expanding the # of campsites towards the back of their property and if they are full hookup we will be sure to try to book one of those. Thanks Happy Acres!!!

I've been making an effort to experience my home state of Indiana a little more these days. From…read morestate parks to roadside attractions to smalltown diners, I've been trying to simply slow down and enjoy Indiana. Chain O' Lakes State Park is one of Indiana's state parks. Located in Albion, a small city of under 2,400 in northeast Indiana's Noble County (think Kendallville), Chain O' Lakes State Park has as its main feature, you guessed it, a chain of lakes. The park has a chain of nine "kettle" lakes (13 lakes total, 9 connected). Kettle lakes are glacial lakes that were formed out of melting ice blocks. Chain O' Lakes offers small boating, 23 miles of forested trails for hiking, a hillside family cabin, a Nature Center, campground, swimming beach, picnic shelters, and the historic Stanley Schoolhouse - a historic one-room schoolhouse. Chain O' Lakes has 426 campsites, 18 cabins, waterfalls, great fishing spots, and you can rent watercraft. This is far enough from Indy that I kind of recommend making it a weekend trip rather than a day trip. There's much to do in Noble County (which also has a decent-sized Amish community). You can canoe a great five-mile path through the park's nine connected lakes (This used to be an official "challenge," though I don't know if it is anymore). There are even canoe camping sites (more isolated than the traditional camping sites). Chain O' Lakes is one of Indiana's under-appreciated gems. It's definitely less accessible than some of the parks, though it has improved somewhat over the years. It's more rustic and natural. It emphasizes outdoor experiences and its just over 2,700 acres feel like you could just get lost in them. The park is only 19 miles northwest of Fort Wayne (Indiana's second largest city), however, it feels like a world away. As someone who typically goes to Fort Ben State Park, I have a major love for these parks where you get there and forget there's a world outside the gates. If you're not the camping type, I'd probably head to Kendallville rather than Albion for the overnight. However, Chain O' Lakes has everything from primitive to more comfortable camping. So, it's easy to find something that works. I hadn't been to Chain O' Lakes in a while. Returning, I was reminded just how much I enjoy the place and how relaxing it is. A few other basics - This is a state park, so there's a fee to enter unless you've gotten the State Park pass (which I recommend for Indiana's 24 state parks). Also, fishing requires the state license and it is enforced. Finally, a couple semi-fun facts. There's a "re-entry center" located directly in the state park with a capacity of 140 incarcerated individuals. It offers educational and treatment programs designed to help people transition into the community - it also helps maintain this park, Pokagon, and the surrounding communities. It's been here since 1967 (and yes, it is safe.). Chain O' Lakes State Park also hosts The HUFF 50k Trail Run/Relay, the 12th largest ultramarathon in North America. Doesn't all this make you want to visit? I'll admit that I tend to stick in the 4-5 star range for most state parks. I love them. In terms of accessibility, I'd go 4-star for Chain O' Lakes. Because it offers so much and is really under-appreciated (in my opinion), I'm bumping it up to 5-stars. The trails, occasionally accessible, really do require someone with mobility issues to have assistance and some simply wouldn't work. Word of caution, as well, with so much water you had best plan for mosquitoes. They can be really serious around here!

Great camping spot! It's always quiet and beautiful. The boat rental closes at 4 ( I couldn't find…read morethe hours) and we didn't know that and got there at 4:05 :( only downside. The trails are good and the Dairy Queen in town is always a nice backup if the hot dogs aren't enough for your hunger

Heather in the office is absolutely AMAZING!…read more I had a smooth transaction. Called her, she found me a space , I paid over the phone, and was able to get in the same day! Easy to get into the spots. Plenty of room. I love my space! Heather will work with you, just tell her what you need and she is on it. They also have a propane refill station. You just drop it off with your name on it and pick it back up. The will invoice you. The maintenance man lives on site and helps everyone he can. You will not be disappointed.

Pros: -Year round availability…read more -Right off I-69, 5 minutes to Auburn and 10-15 minutes to north Fort Wayne. We stayed here for a year because there were no other options. Unfortunately the reviews on Yelp from several years ago are still relevant and this park hasn't attempted to improve at all it seems. They have recently created several new sites, some that are 50amp, which is where we stayed, but there's several problems so I'll list: -The new 50amp sites we stayed in are angled at such an awkward angle it is difficult to back in the camper, especially if all the other sites are full. -The connection to dump your tanks at each site is raised, therefore making it very difficult for your tanks to be emptied. We even tried to build up our lines with boards, but having them flush with the ground like most campgrounds would've been nice. -The electricity seems to be an issue. We spoke with other long term campers who had problems with their campers "over heating" despite having surge protectors on. When we left, I noticed a burnt spot on our brand new power cord that we bought just before we arrived and we had a surge protector on the entire time. We also moved 3 times to different spots and it wasn't until the 3rd spot that our brand new hot water tank began to finally work (we kept thinking it was an issue with the tank, but could never figure out what was going on). After talking with people who moved into our previous spots and them having electricity issues, I assumed it's something not related to our camper. -The laundry room had a "sorry for the construction" note the entire time we were there, but nothing was ever done. It's by far the worst laundry facility I've seen, most of the washers & dryers are not working, there's holes in the ground covers by rugs (which I unknowingly stepped in and twisted my ankle!) and nothing seems to ever be clean or maintained. I recommend going to the laundry mat by Walmart in Auburn if you need to do laundry! -The showers are pathetic. As mentioned above, our hot water tank didn't work most of the time we were there, leaving us to have to take showers at the cabin. The weird thing is, you have to walk in and completely shut the door before the light turns on. Each shower room has 1990's wood peg shelves that your bags slip off and wind up on the disgusting floor. Every shower stall had a jacked up shower head. We had 2 stalls that we would only use because they seemed to be "the best" option. There was mold growing on the walls & ceilings. -The mail is left in the hallway for everyone and anyone to rummage through. We weren't comfortable with that and had our most of our mail sent to a family members house, but for some reason my employer sent me something during tax season that had a lot of personal information and when I found it in the pile of mail, it had been opened. A place we stayed before had mailboxes you could rent for $5 a month and I feel like that would be much safer!!!! Especially since the office is rarely open it seems. -The pool was never in service. -The sites are all gravel. -The grounds flood anytime it rains. -There's no real amenities that makes this place stand out. They raised the prices at the start of 2023 and have been adding new sites, but they need to do something to make this place more desirable to stay at if they want to have happier customers!
