I don't believe the review from "Candhamster H." and the story about not getting a refill. I am here at the Inn right now on September 3rd, 2016, and have been here all weekend. It says their review was one day ago, so we were definitely in the dining room on the same day at the same time. The waitresses are always attentive. I've been coming here for 30 years or more, since I was a young guy. The food is great. The people are nice. The atmosphere is "rustic" I wish they would update some things. Little things like the shuffleboard court is 30+ years old and could be repainted and could use a coat of cement to make a smooth surface. They have a nice little hiking trail, but they've let it become overgrown. (I love the outdoors and groom hiking and biking trails, and always get the urge to bring my chainsaw and trimmers with me to trim up their trail a bit.) The only thing I'd change is to fix up some things which are old and worn out. Fresh coat of paint and such. The showers could be upgraded. There's no A/C but nice mountain breezes. Honestly I think I should give a 3 or 4 star review because a luxury hotel it is not. But as I am sitting here on the front porch, with people talking and kids playing, I'm watching the sun go down and the stars come out, and I'm reminded of 30 years community, atmosphere and memories from the Hemlock Inn, and they are most assuredly worthy of 5 stars.

My boyfriend and I don't need much and usually like to find off-the-beaten-path places but something about this little house in town spoke to me. I can not express how perfect it was for us! Very nice, character house and very comfortable. Rooms are cozy with antique furniture and a "your grandma's house" kinda feel. Breakfast was AMAZING.... I'm a southern girl and look forward to country breakfast and this beat out any breakfast I've had in a while! Price is VERY VERY reasonable for the hospitality and amenities offered. We are adventurers and adrenaline seekers so I wasn't sure how the B&B speed would work for us (we never want to be the "rowdy ones", coming in muddy or late and disturbing the "romanticals"). This Inn is perfect for EVERYONE. During our stay, there were 2 families with children, a backpacking couple, the musicians that played the Saturday night show at the local brewery, and of course us (rafting/biking/hiking and a little bit drunk each night). You will be comfortable here, no matter what you're speed. The best part of this whole experience is the Innkeeper, Luke, and his wife Layla. What an amazing, interesting guy! And so kind and hospitable. I would go back to this place just to get a chance to hang out with this guy more! STAY HERE. You'll love it.

We booked a bed & breakfast package to take our son to the polar express last December. When we got there, no one was around, but there was a ziplock bag with an envelope pinned to a post with my name on it. In the envelope was a letter explaining that we were the only guests that night and the owners were out of town too, and that there would be no breakfast. We were told our room number and that the key would be in the room. We found the room under the front porch. Walked in to find that we were in the basement with polished rock walls and floors. The floors all sloped down and to the back of the room. There was no key to be found anywhere. We left some luggage in the room, but nothing valuable since we could not lock the door, and left for the polar express. We called the owner and left a message explaining our issues, but did not get a reply. We returned from our excursion late in the rain to a completely dark facility, except for our room. With no way to lock the door, because we had no key, I was very concerned for the safety of my family. I had an empty coke can, so I placed it in front of the door to at least alert me if someone tried to come in. Neither my wife nor I got much sleep. By 6am, we looked at each other and decided just to go home since there was no breakfast anyway. We also NEVER got any sort of credit for the lack of breakfast, but were still charged the full amount. This was the WORST hotel experience I have ever had and feel lucky that I am alive to tell the story. Unless you want the full "Cabin In The Woods" type experience, DO NOT STAY HERE!!!

In fact, if you were just magically dropped here, you'd never know that you were in North Carolina instead of Germany. Both the chalet itself, and the surrounding grounds and well maintained. The surrounding grounds are themselves quite noteworthy. There are tons of things on offer, from short hiking trails (complete with strategically placed romantic benches), badminton, croquet, and a wood firepit with a propane starter (no need to build a fire yourself). George was a perfect host, welcoming us and providing tips and directions in the area. He was a great source of information, whether you plan to visit the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park, or explore other parts of the surrounding area. He was also always eager to make sure that his hospitality was unobtrusive, and made sure that we felt at home and that we had our privacy. His thoughtfulness extended to the little things, like starting a fire in the fireplace in the common areas in the morning and evening to take off any fall chill. And add to the overall atmosphere. Our room was also great, with a larger balcony where we were able to sit and enjoy some wine from the Stube (an honor- system store located on the premise) while we sat at enjoyed the stars. Our experience staying here was great and I'd recommend it to anybody!

So I'll start by saying I stayed here four years ago and had an amazing experience. If I had left…read moreit at that, I would probably giving this place 5 stars. Seems like things have gone wayyyyyyyyy downhill since then. I emailed the first week of July asking for an October reservation of the same room I stayed in originally because I enjoyed it so much. I waited two weeks and did not receive a reply (it says on the submission form you are supposed to get a response within 24 hours), so I called back to ask about the reservation I requested. The person who answered found my form submission and told me they are currently having "staffing issues", so they were not sure if they were going to be able to accommodate my stay. However, he collected some additional information from me, including the fact that I have an infant daughter, and told me to call back in a week when they should know if they will have the staff to support in October. Another week goes by and I call back, only to receive a similar response - "we'll know in another week, but assuming we have staff in October, you are penciled in for [the room] you requested". I call back again the next and still, receive essentially the same information. However, this time the guy tells me that they should definitely know in another week and they will call me back to know. He verifies the information I had submitted, including the fact that I have an infant daughter. It is now 1.5 months since I requested my original reservation, and I had still had not received a call back. I call back (again) and am FINALLY told that I can go ahead and square away my reservation. The guy starts asking for details including how many people will be with me, as if this shouldn't already be in their previous notes. As soon as I mention I have an infant daughter, the guy tells me that they only allow kids 12+ and he's "afraid that that isn't going to work". What. a. load. of. crap. Thank goodness I am not looking to reserve a place for Columbus Day weekend in October because I would probably be out of luck. This place has become less a Bed & Breakfast and more of a Bed & B.S!
