Don't expect Helm Paint to stand behind their advice. They sold me the wrong product to seal my travertine pool deck which ruined the expensive travertine. Joseph, the manager, agreed that they were liable and delivered several containers of a remover, along with scrapers and the tools necessary to remove the inappropriate coating then stiffed the labor when a bill was presented. They just flat out reniged paying the $4,000 labor costs after agreeing to cover the costs. I guess it got too expensive for them considering the "remover" was not strong enough to do the job. Every step of this process was led by Helm Paint's employees and I got stuck with the bill. We all need advice when it comes to projects we are not familiar with and need to be able to trust that advice. DO NOT trust Helm Paint and double check anything they tell you as their advice is useless and expensive. Just a TERRIBLE experience. Buy your paint elsewhere or risk getting stuck with a large bill. read more

Shows that I haven't purchased my own paint in awhile since I've never reviewed Helm. I needed replacement paint for some touchup work at my house. I had the old cans (one was from 11 years ago) and brought them into Helm since that's who my painter had used. They took a quick look (rusty cans were not a deterrent) and said on you need X and Y. And with 15 minutes my colors were mixed and I was checked out and ready to go. Yes, the paint is pricey. 2 cans (one interior semi-gloss and one exterior) set me back $100 BUT the paint lasts. If I wasn't replacing doors, I probably still wouldn't have needed to repaint that back door. Staff was lovely and on it. Plus beaucoup parking out front. They even offered to carry my paint to the car, but I need to practice my Travolta from Saturday Night Fever walk. read more

We have painted more surfaces than I care to think about, and I've bought paint just about every place in town. So I know what I'm talking about when I say this is the best place to get your paint. I almost went to a big box store to get paint to match existing fence boards. Luckily, we came to Helm; otherwise I wouldn't have known that what I was trying to match was not actually paint, but an opaque stain. In other words, they know their stuff, and, they won't sell you what you don't need. Their premium paints are more expensive, but they are absolutely the best on the market. If you don't want to pay for premium, ask about the contractor grade. It's still a superior paint, and the help you'll get on your project particulars from these experts is priceless. We properly was sanded to the wood and painted with Ben Moore primer following with two coats lifetime paint. 3 coats total. It started fading in 6 months and was peeling in a year. The owners of Helm actually watched the painting and prep from the next door pub at 4141 St. Charles. They talked the talk, but never helped us at all. Ben Moore paint from Helm started failing within a year, they acknowledged all was done properly, kept saying they'd be helpful and did NOTHING WHATSOEVER. This by far the best paint store in town. They have Benjamin Moore paint which is as good as it gets as well as all the typical stains and finishes. They also have a great selection of metallic and other decorative paints as well as accessories for faux finishes. Finally, and this is the best, your name and the paint you choose goes into their computer so if you go back and need a bucket of that awesome yellow you painted your kitchen but can't remember the name--they have it. This is especially handy on custom stain and paint mixes which they also do. They will have the proportions in their system as well. Oh and fair pricing as well and great service. I went in to hopefully get some advise on how to paint some furniture, as well as get some good quality paint. Let me tell you... they are awesome over there. I found out some awesome knowledge about a primer that sticks to almost anything without sanding, AND bought some awesome paint. The guy was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. He helped my pick out the paint I needed ad the colors I liked. Also I went back because I made a mistake on the color of paint I wanted and they helped me out in replacing it. I would highly recommend them to everyone! The are busy so just be patient. They will get to you and they are very friendly. Don't let the busyness deter you; they will get to you and treat you well. By far the best paint & decorating store in the entire New Orleans & surrounding areas.. I hate to bash other companies, but I've done a lot of renovation & painting in my life and I can't think of a more well rounded and knowledgeable company that I've dealt with than Helm Paint. From Sherwin Williams to any big box stores, they all compare in comparison. I was suckered in by the promise of better prices from the other guys, only to find out that I was being price gouged the whole time. For example: I was told by the manager at Sherwin Williams that if I got an account, I'd be given a contractors discount.. But what I didn't know is that their prices were so overly inflated to start that even if they gave me a 50% discount I was still over paying. I went to Helm Paint and told them of my experience with the other guys and to my surprise, I got better service, knowledge, and way better prices without even needing an acct. I will never again shop for my paint at any other place. Hats off to the crew at Helm Paint... They're doing it right! read more

They wrote "fag" on 4 of my paint cans. Not even kidding, and I have no idea why. There was no problem with my order, no argument, no reason why some employee might have been p!ssed off at me. My friend speculated it may have been because I was asking them to match a color from Lowes called "Lilac Mist," which is a kind of very light gray. I guess that seemed gay to them. I consider this pretty much beyond belief, so I wrote to Benjamin Moore, of which this store is a franchise. No response. Obviously, I will never go back.
