We stayed around the corner from here and stopped by a couple of times. It's a little place with one tiny plastic table and two plastic chairs, so this is definitely NOT a sit down kind of place. It's good for grab and go meals, like so many other places around here. The food we had was good and the guys working were super friendly. The prices aren't bad, either. They have deli food, breakfast plates, sides and a random assortment of other things. I will come back the next time I'm in this part of the city. The name has changed to the Lucky Cheese Deli. This used to be called the Hello Deli that David Letterman would feature on his show with Rupert (but he is gone now). read more

I came in, but I didn't stay. Rupert is long gone, hopefully enjoying his retirement after working so hard for so many years. . The new people running the place were nice, but the place just wasn't the same. They probably kept the name, for the name, recognition, so that people like me would go in and think that it was the same place that it used to be. It's not. While this used to be a true deli, now, it's more like the brick and mortar version of a Halal food cart. Don't get me wrong, There is absolutely nothing wrong with Halal food carts., I have gotten some amazing food at those places. Unfortunately that wasn't what I was looking for when I came in today. We found this restaurant when we were looking for breakfast and continued to come there the rest of our trip. The breakfast sandwiches were made fresh to order. I don't fan-girl much, but when I do, it's usually over something stupid. Today, Rupert himself made me a sandwich. I can't believe he is still doing this. Anyhow, the sandwich is also incredible--but, having it made by Rupert made it priceless. Now I just need to be thrown out by the Soup Nazi, and my life will be complete. Wanted to grab a sandwich for our flight home, read the reviews and we are staying close by so decided to support a local business. Via online ordering I choose the Letterman and noted no ham, extra turkey. Hubby got a veggie wrap with cheese. Through the Yelp photos, I saw that they carry Wise chips, our favorite! Also tried "The Dougy" which included a hash brown inside the bacon, egg and cheese roll. Then, I tried the New Yorker recommended by the wonderful owner, May. This little delicatessen is right around the corner from the Ed Sullivan theater where they film the late show with Stephen Colbert. It is a hole in the wall that can seat about six people. Boxes are stacked up all around the entrance and you honestly wouldn't know it was a delicatessen until you went inside. But I am really glad that we did! They have an extensive sandwich menu with all kinds of different combinations. Both of us had the New Yorker, I had it with sauerkraut and my wife had it with coleslaw. I will tell you that it is arguably the best sandwich of that type that I have ever had. It was hot, gooey, and just a pile of deliciousness! I strongly recommend this place in the service was great. First time to New York City and visiting Times Square. We absolutely loved our visit to the city and had an incredible week. So many great restaurants, so many incredible sites. I can honestly say that walking into Ruperts deli to grab a snack and a couple of beverages was one of the big highlights of our week. If you grew up like we did watching David Letterman every night and saw just a few of the dozens of times that Rupert was on the show -you might have the same feeling and experience. It was so unscripted, we walked by and saw the sign to the Deli and thought, wonder if he's actually owner of this place or was the whole thing done by an actor for Letterman's script? Sure enough we walked in and it was like meeting a big time movie star in plain clothes, and he looked exactly the same as when he first appeared on the show in 1993. Upon our arrival he offered to help and to pose in photos with us. He could not have been nicer! What an amazing surprise fun stop and experience during our week in the big Apple. Rupert and Mai are two of the kindest business people in nyc. I frequented Hello Deli for 7 years thanks to my office being next door, and you couldn't find a better sandwich spot in all of midtown. The sandwiches are generously sized and made to order. Mai frequently made recommendations or thought of ways to combine new flavors and come up with new specials - my former boss ended up having a sandwich named after him after it proved popular! Lunch aside, Rupert and Mai always make you feel welcome and treat everyone with kindness. From regulars to tourists looking for a photo op, they always have a kind word as they send you off with your lunch. I noticed a lot of flies inside and the owners had to search for some hand sanitizer as me and my daughter decided to eat inside due to rain. My ham, cheese and turkey sandwich was pretty small and basic. My daughter had a grilled chicken with avocado and said the same thing. The bread was fresh and the levers were fairly nice. Forget the hype, forget Letterman, forget all the things that put Hello Deli on the map. This place has plain old, good sandwiches. We had a Farmer's club - a BLT with egg salad and generous slices of ham (ham and bacon on the same sandwich - these guys know what their customers like!) and a Hello Deli club. The bacon was as crispy as the lettuce, the tomatoes were ripe and not too runny, and the deli meats were flavorful and sliced just thin enough that you could easily take a bite and not worry about bringing the entire cut out of the sandwich. I give this place two thumbs up for the quality of the food. Let the tourists come in because they saw it on tv - they'll get great sandwiches for a good price.
