    Hellman/Ehrman Estate

Hubby and I were staying at the lake, and wanted to see something we had not seen yet. DD found this in a travel guide...so we headed up 89...a wonderful drive in itself!! About 25 minutes beyond Vikingsholm is the Hellman/Ehrman Estate on the grounds of Sugar Pine Point State Park. There is a day-fee for the park. The thing we did not know was that they were having their annual "Living History Day" that very same day...and we lucked out, and were the last car they admitted...at 10:00 AM!! The site was bustling with activities...kiddie games, stories , a band, free house tours, a hot dog stand. WOW!! It did not feel crowded, even with a big event going on! This home is larger than Vikingsholm, and is situated on a grassy hill above the lake. It has a earthy exterior, of stone, and pine. Turrets at both ends make it symmetrical and pleasing. Inside it is craftsman, with beautiful wood. The guest room are beautiful, but the servants quarters are quite stark in contrast. I loved the kitchen!! We had a great day...and would love to come back with the rest of the family!

I love how every single time I visit the wonderful, mystical, magical realm that is the Lake Tahoe region, I always come across a new gem to brag about. For instance, during my first trip I fell in love with Sand Harbor Beach. It became a memory that I've fondly revisited in my dreams (https://www.yelp.com/biz/sand-harbor-incline-village). Most recently though, I stumbled upon my favorite spot in Lake Tahoe thus far! I bring you Hellman-Ehrman Estate - a beach, getaway, state park, and mansion all bottled up into one. Long story short, my girlfriend and I spent a couple days around Lake Tahoe a few weekends ago, and we decided to spend our second morning touring one of the region's famous homes. If you've been to Lake Tahoe, you're probably familiar with Vikingsholm Mansion; like Vikingsholm, the Hellman-Ehrman Estate was a fancy mansion that eventually got sold to the state of California. But little did we know that our experience here would be much more than just an open-house. First off, the location. The Hellman-Ehrman Estate was found inside the BEAUTIFUL Sugar Pine Point State Park. It's along the west part of Lake Tahoe, about 40 or so minutes north from South Lake Tahoe. Admission to the park was $10 per car, but that PALED in comparison to the adventure we encountered. Once inside the park, we made a bee line towards the visitor's center. We knew the next tour would be at 11:30am and weren't about to miss it and have to wait another hour (check website for times: https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=991). We paid $10 (per person) for admission - plenty of compensation for the lovely conversation we had with the park staff. With about five or so minutes before the tour began, we took a quick look at the landscape surrounding the estate. Boy was it SO GORGEOUS! Even though we really wanted to get brunch right after the tour, we knew we had to spend some time exploring the area. I mean how can you pass up pristine waters and skyscraper-like trees? The tour would eventually begin, and even though I probably don't remember 90 percent of what I learned, I honestly felt like the journey was definitely worthwhile. Our guide, ironically the SAME EXACT ENERGETIC WOMAN who toured us around Vikingsholm, took us through dozens of cute little rooms, showed us a GIGANTIC old-fashioned kitchen, and even gave us a peak into some of the lesser-known stories of the mansion. It was informative, thorough, and engaging. But even better than the tour was the scenery. Remember how I said I fell in love with Sand Harbor? Well the beach right outside Hellman-Ehrman was literally a PRIVATE version of Sand Harbor. The water was absolutely stunning, transparent, and glistening. It was utterly peaceful and the trees filtered out any sound from the highway. The best part was the fact that barely anyone was even there! We literally got all the benefits of Tahoe's greatest beaches without any of the traffic. We spent a good half hour lounging around and enjoying the views. Now this was the real dream. For the cool trip and all that goes along with it, I must give the Hellman-Ehrman Estate an "Omg, I'd travel 2 hours for this" rating. Even if you don't go inside it, you MUST come here for the views. Have fun and proper,

Note: Ehrman Mansion and Sugar Pine Point State Park have two yelp pages so I am posting the same review on this page incase a bride clicks here instead of the other page. I got married in Sugar Pine Point State park, with Ehrman Mansion in the background. It was a beautiful September evening and our pictures are AMAZING! Danielle with the special events crew is a pleasure to work with! I am not giving this 5 stars as a venue for a couple reason. 1) When you pay the special event fee to get married here all you get is the property (no tables, chairs, linen, electricity, no putting stakes in the ground and a laundry list of other rules) 2) You must get event insurance 3) You can't plug anything into the mansion or gazebo because the electrical is super old so your caterer and DJ will need to bring their own generator. 4) There is are sound rules so your DJ has to keep music at a certain level. It's not that big of a deal. Just obviously not "club" level loud. 5) Lights out at 10pm sharp - I was concerned that a 5pm to 10pm wedding was going to feel super short but 10pm was a perfect time for the wedding to end and all my guest were still around for the send off In summation, Ehrman Mansion is a breathtaking background for your big day, and I highly recommend it, but if you are thinking of getting married in a State Park to save some money then look some place else. Since you have to bring EVERYTHING to the venue, it get's pricey. I also highly recommend working with vendor who have done wedding at this location. It'll make your life so much easier because they know the dos and don'ts already.

Great excursion and very good tour. Enjoyed being able to see so much of the house and living quarters. Beautiful area, a must see if visiting Lake Tahoe.

One of the most underrated spots on Lake Tahoe!! A great place to spend the day , natural shade…read morefrom the trees in the grassy area , swimming and soaking up the sun on the dock and incredible lake and mountain scenery from everywhere. If you bring a kayak or paddle board you can paddle just south towards Meeks Bay and tuck yourself into a number of smallish beaches if you want some privacy. When we have a weak winter and the lake level drops , you will have a very small 6-8 foot deep sandy beach area but we haven't had that for quite a few years. So the only thing you don't really get here is a big sandy beach but you do get a fantastic stretch of beautiful lake tahoe in a park like atmosphere with towering trees !!! Not too shabby!

Come to think about it, probably was overly cautious having bear spray within reach. Visitors must comply to safety rules and prevention. Supposedly fragrant items (e.g. soap, shampoo, etc.) are highly attractive to bears. Our assigned site (number 76) sits at the beginning of the loop. Surrounded by neighbors on all sides except one. Nearest restroom and dumpster is just two sites away. Potable water is accessible in front of site 78. Bear storage are included at each site along with a picnic table and a fire ring. Camp host will make frequent runs around the loop with firewood available for purchase. There is a presence of carpenter ants but was not a nuisance. Experienced hot mid days and warm nights in the month of early August. Ideal and convenient for those looking to visit various parts of Lake Tahoe and even neighboring city of Reno.
