Helix is great for small groups - make sure you make a reservation!! They fill up quick! Even if you are a party of 2 (and the bar is full) it's best to make a reservation! They have good apps, the specials are hit/miss. We don't drink alcohol but they make an excellent Roy Rodgers. I do wish they would make more ND friendly dishes...aka not spicy...but overall we do love going out here! read more

I like this chain wine bar: the cocktails are great and there's some nice small plate options. I've been disappointed in the entrees though. The trout special was pretty good, but not quite what I expected for the price ($30). The shredded potatoes were just frozen hash browns. The sauce was tasty though. The service is fine, but certainly not attentive, we waited quite awhile for our food and no one stopped by the check on us or update us. Again, at this price point, I expect a bit more. I would return but must remind myself to stick with their strengths. read more

Excellent salads! We ate every bite. It had the best dressing over beautifully proportioned featured ingredients. My ricotta gnocchi was delish. From the description I pictured more vegetables. The arugula pesto was perfectly tart. Mr's filet was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The risotto was perfectly creamy, tasty, and the grape tomatoes offer a nice texture balance. We split a creme brûlée. Nice crisp sugar top and a cold custard. Our bottle of red blend was delightful. read more

Food was damn good. Service was just as good. And the atmosphere was one of the best my wife and I have been in in a long time. It is our "go to" place to go from now on when we're in town. A cute little place that I'm sad I'm only just hearing about! We had our Valentine's Day dinner here and we are already looking forward to coming back. For apps we got the pork belly and the burrata salad, both delicious. Mains we had the steak and the seafood pasta which were equally delicious. Trendy new place in town. More sophisticated than most of the places around these parts. Great wine selection. We had the Cheese and Pesto Ravioli. Just made the pasta fresh today. Excellent. The tomato vodka sauce was just right. It didn't overpower the ravioli. We also had the scallops. Fresh and properly cooked. Not overdone. They were on a bed of grapefruit slices. Drizled with butter and honey. Only four for $16. I also had the grilled asparagus, also cooked correctly. Excellent flavors. The problem I see is that the local patrons may not appreciate the quality and only see the price. read more

This was a very stress-inducing experience. Why does it take 10 minutes to pour a glass of wine when we were the only table in there? I'm very confused. A group of us came in and the server was incredibly inexperienced and the bartender came and explained she was chilling a bottle of wine that none of us were drinking. The charcuterie board is overpriced and doesn't come with cheese, which we were all horrified about. Admittedly, the first time we visited (years ago) it was an awful experience. The service was horrible. The food was mediocre and the prices were outrageous. I swore I would never go again. Years later, my wife and our friends convinced me to go back and I'm glad they did. It seems like the entire restaurant has undergone a complete transformation. Now, it's one of our favorite spots. The food is good. The service is good and the cocktails are fabulous. Everyone should try the Bellu Luna Martini. Now, we are regulars going 2-3 times a month. read more

The other reviews are right, this place is fantastic! Grand Forks needs more classy places like this. I had a chicken pasta dish from the menu that was delightful and my friend had one of their specials for the day, duck breast. I'm not a wine expert, so I was a little clueless on which wine to get, so our server offered to pair our entrees for us. He did not disappoint. Both entrees were cooked perfectly and with the wine made for an all around amazing meal. Other than the food and attentive service, the ambience is trendy and lively. This is the perfect spot to meet up with friends, go to with family visitors or enjoy a much needed date night. Definitely recommended. read more

Everyone who lives in Grand Forks knows there aren't many options of where to eat. This is our first time coming here and we will definitely come back. Nice setting, well decorated and trendy. Innovative menu so if you're a burger person and not wanting unique, skip this place. Nice wine menu, beer and cocktails. This is one of our regular top - 5 stops. The staff is small but friendly, so you do wait longer than usual for your drink and food, but it is worth it. Plus you get some added time to visit with friends. Don't let the name fool you. It's more than just wine and bites. They have a full bar and make the best old fashioned in town along with serving beer. The chef is on-point and so is the food every time in my experience. I have never had a bad meal or experience here. I'll continue to support them as long as they are open. read more

I'm so disappointed! I love a good wine bar, but this wasn't it. The staff didn't know much about the wine. The scallop appetizer was great. But the sides came out to our entrees far before our meals, my entree came out room temp. It was flank steak. Flavor was good but it was even getting that left over look to it because it was so cold. We didn't get our bill for 20 minutes and we were our waitress's only table. For the bill they hand you a tablet that has tips starting off at 16% and higher so there's no other options to select even if the service is bad. Food flavor was good but service was awful. They were standing next to where the food comes out socializing. I was so looking forward to finally eating here. Very expensive bad experience. read more

Notice how the other 5 star reviewers of this place have few or even no other reviews written and draw your own conclusions. I ordered an $8 side of sauteed wild mushrooms. The sauce it came with was overwhelmingly salty. It must have been some kind of accident because it was enough to make your mouth shrivel up and I can't see any chef knowingly serve it to someone. Also got the $22 rabbit paella. I wanna say that it was also really salty, but it was honestly hard to tell after tasting the mushrooms. There was hardly any meat. I was only able to find three bite-sized chunks of sausage and a single piece of what I assume was the rabbit. It could of been a stray piece of white meat chicken and I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. I finished my meal if only because for $30 I was going to at least fill up, but I still left hungry and needed to top off when I got home. I've been disappointed plenty of times, but rarely has a restaurant served me something so upsetting and insulting. I wish there was some meaningful way I could hurt this establishment aside from whining about it on Yelp. Go to Sky's. For the same price you'll be much happier. read more

My husband and I went for dinner before the latest blizzard kept us inside indefinitely. The atmosphere at the restaurant was upbeat, like a hurricane party! It was BOGO Wednesday for their wine by the glass. The warm crab dip was cheesy and delicious. I had the scallop appetizer as my entree, it was just the right amount. My husband had the bison Osso Bucco with polenta. It was fabulous, perfectly cooked. We had a glass of Rose and a red blend, then switched. I've been here twice now... My first experience was great! But apparently that was because my friend and I were the only ones in the place. Last visit, I had the same server though I'm not sure if he should even be called that as he only came over once in 1.5 hours and that's because I waved him over to us!! Incredible. Do not come to this place looking for reasonably priced food, or good food for that matter. However, if your intent is to try some decent cocktails and take advantage of their impressive wine list, go for it. After entering the restaurant, we weren't greeted, but instead were stared at awkwardly by who I assume to be one of the managers standing behind the bar. After stepping in and assuming we were to seat ourselves, she then came forward and pointed us toward a table by the kitchen that was open. During our visit I tried two cocktails, one was almost sickeningly sweet and the other was exactly as it should have tasted; their wine list was fantastic and offered some interesting options, a "taste," a half-glass, and a full glass, all reasonably priced. The downfall, however, was the food. We ordered the seared scallops and the rabbit paella. The scallops, of which we received *four* and were watery and tasteless, were served in an unseasoned cauliflower mash with a red sauce topping that I still don't know the purpose of because it certainly didn't have any flavor. Our rabbit paella was honestly a bit of an insult to call paella. I'm not sure if you're familiar with paella, but it is a beautiful and delicious Spanish dish usually seasoned with saffron, garlic and lemon, and sometimes with rosemary or paprika depending on who you get your recipe from. Never before have I seen one seasoned with cumin, the infamous "taco" seasoning (that I love when it's used properly), and this dish was ALL cumin. I couldn't believe it; there was no room for any other flavor in the dish because of how much cumin they put in it. The only other flavor that managed to pull through was the sausage. There were maybe five or six pieces of sausage and an equal amount of rabbit, but the rabbit could easily have been mistaken for dry, overcooked chicken. Now all of this could have honestly been forgiven if not for the absolutely ridiculous prices. $16 for four disappointing scallops, and $22 for taco rice. The drinks and wine, blessedly, were reasonably priced and the small highlight of my experience. I will not be going here again unless I come specifically for the wine, and even then I will have a mental debate in my car about if I really want to have nothing but wine, or just go to someplace that has less options, but is guaranteed to have an appetizer I will actually enjoy. That said, I want Helix to do well because this is a great idea for Grand Forks. The staff was polite and attentive, the decor was a bit on the hipster-y side but welcoming, and the concept of a relaxed yet lively place to just sit down and enjoy a fantastic glass of wine at the end of the day is wonderful. I hope they improve and learn as they go along, but until I hear of that improvement from someone else, I won't be visiting again. read more

I had high hopes that were quickly dashed. Our server seemed like she didn't want to be at work. We repeatedly had to call her over. The 'charcuterie platter' ($28) was little more than cold-cuts, torn bread and a few berries. No pickles or nuts as the menu described. They were out of crab cakes. The server failed to tell the soup of the day. The Cajun pork chop ($18) and twice baked potato ($7) were ok but not good enough to return. Overall, the experience left much to be desired and the food was grossly over priced. You would have better food and service at either Sky's or Toasted Frog. Actually, you would do just as well at any of the many generic, family-friendly restaurants in Grand Forks. Spend your money elsewhere. Avoid this place, you'll be glad you did. read more

The new Helix restaurant is a totally new, unique experience in Grand Forks! I've been there several times and have had good service and food and of course, wine, each time! I can whole heartily recommend the steak, red snapper, and terrific burger! My daughter loves the chicken and cheesecake. The apps are great and generous. Great little place with good wine. The owner generally introduces new wine and takes the effort to get to know the patrons. The server there is the sweetest gal and very attentive. Worth a visit and comparable in quality to any of the places we visited when we lived in San Francisco. read more
