We're fortunate to have one such exceptional talent practicing among us. Ever notice that cool white-painted Seventies cubic building on Wells near Vassar? It looks like it would be the home of a superior dentist or chic medical spa. It's Helianthus Floral Design, the atelier of Camryn Morrissey. No fancy displays or walk-ins full of stock greet you. To appreciate Ms. Morrissey's work you have to see the pictures, and then, as soon as possible after, see it in person. For me, it started with photos of two friends' wedding. All I could focus on was the flowers. How ravishing they were. Gorgeous but casual at the same time. Unusual but exquisitely-calibrated color combinations. Perfect for this couple and their celebration. "Who did your flowers?" Then I went in. Camryn still looks like the high-schooler she was when she started her business. But her youth belies a mature eye and skill. Try not to control too much (I know, it's hard to trust in Reno); let her do her thing for you. She knows what's fresh and available and, like any artist, needs freedom to create her effect. I stick with height/size, color direction (if I care), and maybe a vessel (I like to bring my own but really she could make something sublime in a glass jar.) Don't worry: She won't disappoint. I've posted an example. I showed her a picture of the room, told her where I wanted to put it, and gave her the vase. Notice how the arrangement she did is asymmetrical but balanced, elegant but effortless-looking, and fits perfectly into the milieu? This was done in two hours, as a walk-in, on the day of the dinner party; so no special buying or planning. AND this arrangement was a week old when these photos were taken, so you know the flowers were fresh. Inarguably, she's got it dialed-in. Helianthus pretty much checks all my floral design boxes. Plus, they're nice people. (Her mom, Wendy, is her assistant.) AND (as if all that isn't enough) she partners with other local artisans so there are tasteful gifts, cards, and home accessories in the shop, too. read more

I AM IN AWE. Camryn's work is flawless. She has amazing communication and everything she does is just pure magic! I had to postpone my wedding due to Covid, and then decided to cancel altogether because I got pregnant.
