Suburban H-town libraries - 1 of 2 - Far south end The Helen Hall Library could pass as a library from the '70s in SoCal ... be it in a suburb, at a high school, or at a community college. It has that look. Sitting on a key corner in League City, the first city immediately south of Harris County (read: the county that contains Houston), it actually sits in Galveston County. It shares the property with other municipal functions and, out front is a big parking lot dotted with (post) oak trees. The library is simply laid out, with a big circulation desk, a help desk, a movie area, a children's area, and some other rooms on the first floor. It is actually the second floor that will be of most interest to adult patrons. Upstairs are reference, most of the stacks, computers, and tables and seating areas. The upstairs area pushes its functional areas out to the floor to ceiling windows and, with the overhang of the dated arched porticos, the effect of incoming sunlight is partly diminished. This is a good thing because it makes it easier to sit at a table or a chair near the windows. However, there are other quiet seating areas inboard on the second floor. The employees at the circulation desk, help desk, and reference desk (on the second floor) were pleasant enough. They have quite a few computers and, sometimes, it's nice to sit at a normal sized monitor instead of fussing with a smartphone and the "myopia" of that nonetheless very convenient contraption. There are also art works at various places in the library, as well as announcements for a full slate of library and community programs. I can't find much to complain about except for one thing: recycling bins for paper, plastic bottles, and the like are not (easily) found. I was hoping to rid myself of some of that stuff. So, it's a balancing act - in the country's borderline annoyingly progressive northern tier, you get smugness, but it's very easy to recycle just about anywhere you may be. In many newer, growing, and spread out areas in the Sunbelt, you are welcomed in a friendlier and more informal style, but have to bite your tongue about the fact that all the stuff you want to recycle may end up unrecycled, away from prying eyes, and probably somewhere far away, possibly up near Amarillo.

Great big ole library with lots of chairs, so you can read, browse a magazine, or just stare at the walls. Downstairs it feels cramped up, so take your butt upstairs where you can explore and finally have some quiet time for yourself. The computers are located upstairs. They have a teen room with computers and other teenagers. The librarian upstairs also is OK, she seemed to show a bit of an attitude as she was assisting my aunt and I. She just kept acting like she was a know it all. The printing system is very confusing; you have to go to many steps to get your end result. That is annoying! The parking lot is huge; I'm guessing it is shared. The library is near the Civic Center just off the curve to your right side. Look for the large pillars and you'll know you have made it.

I usually come up here with the wife. Or I'm dropping kids of to do research on school projects. Very nice place with all you need to find information on any topic! They also have computers your kids can use while they are there along with being able to print your info! Great place!!!

This is my favorite place to study. They do a great job of separating the children's and computer areas from the quiet study section. They also have a fantastic DVD section. I wish they were open longer on Sundays.

A great local library. If you want it, just ask. They will probably buy it just because you want it.

Brazoria County Library System - Pearland Library

Decided on a whim to apply for a library card within the Brazoria County Library system. Well…read moreactually, maybe it wasn't on a whim. I needed to locate a book for a discussion (professionally related) and the Pearland Library was the only location to have it. So shout out to the Brazoria County Library system! Thanks! I've visited this location once to pickup my library hold. I explored for a short period of time but not for very long. I was able to grab my hold off the shelf with ease and get it checked out with the library staff member. Kudos to them because I didn't have my physical library card with me. I chose to give them a call first to ensure not having my physical card wouldn't be a problem. Staff members were nice and helpful. This location is spacious. When I'm in the area, I'll definitely return. Oh something else to note - a huge green flag (!!) for this library system is that you can apply for the library card online and they will send your card to you in the mail. Talk about accessibility, am I right?

The library isn't overly large nor is it super tiny; it seems as it's just right to some. There…read moreisn't enough tables located in quiet areas. The children's section wasn't completely separated from the adult section as I could hear rambunctious kids talking oh so loudly and playing as if they don't understand the concept of silence. It does seem like the selection of audiobooks and DVDs is far greater than what Parker Williams and Freeman library has combined. Though, this isn't a Harris county library branch. I'm not sure if that's the reason why they don't have wifi for guests. The staff wasn't very welcoming as when I walked in I wasn't greeted, just stared at like I was an alien from outer space. However, one of the shelving assistant that had a Irish accent or British accent was polite and showed that she was friendly. They have early voting going on now in a separate room. There aren't any tile floors just carpet and no bad odor inside. Also, the parking wasn't limited meaning there is lots of spots available. It's pretty convenient to find, if you're traveling from Green Tee just drive straight onto Liberty Dr., it's on the right side across from City Hall. Just off of 518, right before you get to the episcopal church.
