This is my 2nd review of Hel's Kitchen and I still cannot express just how lovely they are to work with. We were originally working with Hels for a 200 person wedding that was to happen 9/26/2020. Well as we all know, that changed due to COVID and while it could have been awful in deciding what we wanted to do, Hels and all of our vendors made us feel so confident in our new plan: 50 people in our backyard. After planning and re-planning and having 3 back up plans just in case, not a beat was missed by Linda and her team. Not only did I have full confidence in them working with our coordinator I had full confidence in stepping back as a bride and just letting them do what they are great at - catering. Our guests are still talking about the food - and that is NOT typical for a wedding. Truly, some of the best food many of us have ever had. From appetizers, to service to plated meals of chicken & steak - Hels is the choice you should make for your next event (big, small or anywhere in between). Hel's Kitchen catered our dinner for 29 people on Xmas eve. I didn't love all the food, but I'm giving five stars because every person I interacted with there was so nice, responsive, and competent. I would absolutely recommend them, I'm thrilled they are here in Northbrook. As for the food, taste is so subjective and it is hard to please all the people with every dish. Everyone thought the Thai chicken skewers with peanut sauce were delicious. The Mediterranean chicken was also very good (loved the artichokes). The sweet potato mini pancakes were also a hit. The Tangine vegetables were too bland. I like more flavor, spices. To their credit, they use very little salt. The bourbon chicken skewers went untouched. The Jerusalem salad desperately needed dressing, it was also untouched (but of good quality). Having them cater saved us days of time preparing and cooking, it was well worth the money. They are super organized and, as I mentioned above, great people to do business with. We'll certainly try them again now that we know what we like. read more

Hel's Kitchen Catering is THE BEST at what they do. I plan events for a nonprofit organization but my background is in hospitality, catering, and catering sales. I've worked with a lot of people and catering companies over the last 10 years but these guys know what they're doing. Linda is incredibly helpful, knowledgeable and friendly, and the on-site team executes flawlessly. This year we had Mike and Luanna at our event and I couldn't have asked for more. We had some last minute changes and they took it in stride with a smile on their faces. My daughter was married in late June 2018 at The Grove in Glenview. Hels's Kitchen was one of their preferred vendors. As luck would have it, a friend of mine had attended a wedding that Hel's Kitchen catered. She couldn't rave enough about the delicious, creative food and wonderful service she experienced. We had our annual Hanukkah family bash last night. At the final hour, I'd realized I'd had enough on my plate and they weren't potato latkes! I enjoy all the accolades and truly love doing the whole thing myself. This time, I acquiesced and handed it over to David Borris at Hel's Kitchen. David assured me that he was going to send me a "lovely, and very talented guy." I told David that my kitchen is so antiquated, when you turn on the micro wave oven, and the toaster at the same time, the electricity goes off! This gem of a guy, Eduardo, was indeed talented and lovely beyond words. He made and saved the day. He assured me that frequently, they run into altercations on location and are trained to "make do." Never mind what happened... The food? Sorry Grandma. The matzoh ball soup was better than yours. The salmon was cooked to perfection, not dry or too flaky, the flavor delicious! We had Chicken basil, grilled veggies, and a wonderful salad t'boot! Not to mention, the potato latkes were kick "a!" I'd insisted on making my own apple sauce, and at the last minute, Eduardo pulled off that caper too! All the minutia aside, this is your go to caterer. We all need our carefully planned gatherings of friends, family, et al, to be special. Dinner for 25 - Buffet Service Great food - I ordered one of their preset menus plus added a couple of extras. Loved the chicken warped dates. Everything was devoured - not even a little left overs for me. They brought the chafing dishes with the little fire warmers along with serving utensils. I can't believe it took me so long to write my review! Hel's Kitchen catered our wedding on 7.9.11. We requested a vegan meal and even though they had never done an entire vegan menu before, they worked really hard and came up with a menu that people still compliment! The eggplant was really really amazing. All the servers and the coordinator the night of our wedding were amazingly helpful, nice, professional, and efficient. We worked with Nikee at Hel's, and she was incredible. She was so helpful, offering suggestions when I was stuck, but also listening to the things that were really important to me. She was very communicative, and honest, and our wedding's success had a lot to do with her. She hooked us up with great vendors, helped us stay within our budget, and most importantly, was really really really pleasant to work with. So easy peasy! I ordered the calypso cocktail package, home delivered. A half hour before my party, the truck shows up and gets everything set up in 15-20 minutes. Then after the party, we just rinse everything off, put it out on the porch for pickup the next day. Everyone raved! The food was delish and it looked so pretty. The reason I did not give 5 stars. I tipped the guy... and then hubby didn't know and he tipped too. The guy could have said something! grrrr-rrrr. Also, I ordered several items in addition to the calypso buffet. I also told the sales person I was cooking beef and pork etc... at some point, It would have been since to get advice that I would have WAY too much food. Hel's Kitchen was an absolute pleasure to work with. We hired them to cater our wedding at the Woman's Club of Wilmette. They worked with our budget and created a menu that met our needs (heavy on the bacon appetizers!). They coordinated well with the other vendors and helped us put the evening's schedule together. They also let us bring our own alcohol, which is a huge savings. Our guests have all told us the food was incredible (and we agree)! The staff working the event were very professional as well. We labored over hiring a caterer and are glad we finally landed with Hel's. Lots of other good choices out there, but they were easily the most affordable and professional we encountered. "Tell me what you want, and we'll make it happen" was the theme that Linda Norgaila and the Hel's Kitchen Team adopted from the day we first discussed our wedding plans. Our wedding was at The Grove Redfield Estate, in Glenview and we weren't sure what setup we would use for the ceremony and reception given the unpredictable weather we had in May. We found great comfort in having Linda in our corner as she was prepared with a plan A,B and C depending on the weather and we ended up having a beautiful day! We knew the food was going to be fantastic when we had the tasting, and it did not disappoint. All the guests loved the food and the service was exceptional. I have to second the other amazing review for Hel's. They also catered our wedding at the Wilmette Woman's Club, and everything--from the food to the staff to the decor--was superb. Our coordinator was Nikee, and she was a joy to work with. I was a little worried when she told me she would be out on maternity leave until a few weeks before our wedding, but she passed our account to another coordinator without any trouble. The best part about Hel's was their pricing. We checked out several North Shore caterers, and Hel's offered food and service on par with other catering companies that cost double. If only I had another party to cater so I could order more of their bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with chorizo...yum! read more

We used Hel's for our wedding on 7/23/17 and this review is long overdue. There are really no words that would do justice for the appreciation we have for David Borris and his team at Hel's Kitchen. We started our journey to find a caterer with two things in mind: quality, interesting food, and a limited budget. Despite working in the wedding industry as musicians, we had never hired a caterer and we did not realize how invaluable a caterer can be to the actual planning process and flow of the entire event. We went through several catering interviews over several months before realizing that our first instincts were correct. Not only does Hel's provide 30 years of food experience, they provide 30 years of people and planning experience. We were happy that our initial consultation happened to be with the owner of this well-established North Shore gem (although everyone we worked with was fantastic!). David is a friendly, welcoming, honest, and down-to-earth expert with the patience of a saint. We asked questions throughout our conversations and he answered every one of them. Our parents were welcomed into the process as well (which was important because Lara's mom is French! ;)). We changed our minds about the details many times and David invested hours in our event before we even officially agreed to use Hel's. When a few details changed, he even gave us a follow up tasting to ensure our satisfaction. David (and all of his staff) are extremely thorough, detail oriented and hard-working. They will listen to your concerns, explain everything, share price breakdowns, and work with you to make sure you are satisfied with every detail. We wanted an international menu, so we went with a European station and an Asian station. We had an impressive variety of flavors and something for everyone (including vegans and gluten free, dairy free guests). David even went so far as to visit Argyle street to ensure that his Banh Mi condiments and nuoc-mam were comparable to the best Vietnamese restaurants in town. When it came time for our wedding day, we really had no concerns because we knew that Hel's Kitchen staff works as a professional, intuitive and caring team. Their attitude toward their work is really a testament to the importance of valuing one's employees. When we first met David, he gave us a tour of the facilities and introduced us to every employee by name. The food was fantastic, the display was gorgeous, the staff was polite and our guests were delighted. Even when the rain started 30 minutes before our ceremony, Hel's Kitchen worked with our other vendors like a dream to move tables to make it possible for everyone to sit theater style at our venue for the ceremony (which was originally going to be outside) and then moved it all back during cocktail. We had our wedding at A New Leaf on 9.10.11. We chose Hel's Kitchen as our caterer and loved every moment of the planning process with them! It all had to do with Nikee. She was our point person from the beginning and the process couldn't have been smoother! She is so sweet, flexible, and accommodating! She truly 'got' us! She nailed the menu from the start, listened to all of our needs, and perfected every little detail. My husband loved them for the detailed breakdown of the costs and how really worked with our budget! Nikee never once let her guard down, she was always pleasant, smiling, and positive. Any bride needs a person like Nikee and any catering company needs a person like her! Nikee also had a great partner who was so wonderful to work with as well, Sandy was just as fabulous if Nikee was away! Our walk through at the venue was wonderful, she really helped me breakdown the set up, she helped me with my ideas, my needs for decor, and really knew the venue to give me advice on how everything would work! It makes any bride feel great to know that she can make things happen and make it look beautiful! The day of our wedding, I walked in and just LOVED the linens! My ideas and her input made it come to life and look gorgeous! Everything was set up just right and made the venue traffic just flow easily. The food got rave reviews! Hel's catered my wedding in November, and at first they were great to work with--very attentive and very accommodating of my husband-to-be's severe allergy to nuts and sesame (he can go into anaphylactic shock if he eats either of these things). However, when we sat down to eat a bite right after our ceremony, we were served an item with sesame seeds in it. My husband spotted them before he took a bite, but this honestly ruined the whole meal for us. How could we trust that everything else served on the menu was nut free and sesame free? We were clear about the allergy throughout the process, and I emailed the catering coordinator two days before the wedding to reiterate that everything had to be nut free and sesame free. After the wedding, I asked them to make an adjustment to our bill to make this right. They declined to do this, and instead offered to send my husband and me a free dinner at our home. As if we would feel safe eating their food when they already demonstrated their incompetence when dealing with allergens at our WEDDING. read more

We had our wedding at the Kenilworth Club on 9.17.11. After receiving a great estimate from Hel's Kitchen and being thoroughly impressed with the creative dishes and quality of food at our tasting, we knew that Hel's kitchen was going to be our best option as a caterer. Nikee and her team did not dissapoint when the wedding day came. Everything was wonderful, the food was excellent and the staff did a great job. We utilized a separate vendor to stock our bar and ended up being a little short on a few liquors that went fast as the reception got underway. One of the Hel's Kitchen staff ran out with one of our bridesmaids to get extra booze, which was a huge help. Many guests commented on the quality of the food and loved the late night snacks. I can't even begin to tell you how immensely grateful we are for Linda and her team at Hel's Kitchen Catering who helped make our wedding this past September everything we could have ever hoped for. We were initially recommended by Natalie Moore, the events coordinator at Elawa Farm where we were planning to have our ceremony and reception. My husband and I weren't familiar with many catering companies in/around the North Shore so we really don't know what to expect...but wow, Linda blew us away. My husband and I live in San Francisco so our entire theme was "bringing California to Chicago". She totally nailed it! From the delicious colorful fresh food, lovely wine, country cross-back chairs, acacia serving platters all the way down to the gold-topped salt and pepper shakers, everything was on point! Linda helped provide the most wonderful experience for us above and beyond just catering. She even held the door open for my Dad and I before we walked down the wedding aisle. My mom won't stop telling stories of how Linda made sure everything was exactly how I wanted it and if it wasn't right she was dashing away to make things right. It was like magic. My Husband and I initially hired Hel's Kitchen for our August 2011 and at the beginning were very happy. The price was right and the food was good. However, we did have to fire them about 3 months before our wedding. Nikee, who were working with was not very responsive in returning phone calls or emails (it took about 2 weeks to get a question answered). After speaking with her on the phone and telling her that this was unacceptable she promised that she would be more responsive, only have her show up 45 minutes late for our next meeting. At this meeting, she was completely unprepared and unable to answer any questions that we had. She told us that they were very busy (which I am sure they are) and basically our wedding had to take the backseat. We were told several different things from different people and could never seem to get a straight story. They never seemed to listen to what we wanted and had to ask several times for things in our proposal to get changed. In the end, we did not feel comfortable that they would be able to execute our wedding. Thank goodness, we were able to find another Caterer . I would really add caution to anyone considering using this company. read more

My husband and I used Hel's kitchen for our wedding at The Redfield Estate in September of 2014. We loved working with Will! He was creative, attentive and handled every detail with the greatest of care. He listened to and took the time to educate us on our budget, which is the reason we booked him. We didn't get that experience from other consultations. The staff was bright and fun to work with. I've worked ten years in the wedding industry and it was important to me to select people who not only enjoy their jobs but are good at it - Hel's kitchen was the best decision we made. The food was mouthwatering-ly good. We have a lot of vegetarians, vegans and health conscious eaters in our group and they have not stopped raving about the meal. I just got married on June 11th at Promontory Point in Chicago (Hyde Park neighborhood) Hel's Kitchen was our caterer, and they were AWESOME! From the beginning, my husband and I knew we had a pretty strict budget, but also wanted something romantic and picnic-y to go with our reception sight and laidback personalities. Nicolle Fellows was our event coordinator and she was a dream to work with. All the other reviews praising her are completely accurate. Nikee is sweet, knowledgeable, professional and worked with us so that we could fit our budget and have the perfect wedding reception. The food at our reception was delicious, our tasting was lovely and Hel's kitchen staff was fabulous! During our reception, Sandy was overseeing things and she made sure each little detail went off without a hitch. We did a lot of DIY things for our tables & Hel's allowed us to drop it off the day before and they set up everything prior to our guests arriving. Flowers, candles, favors...they really went above and beyond. One of the servers made sure I had wine every time I ran out. He got me lots of salmon canapes when we first arrived at the reception which was so important because I barely got to eat prior to that. It made me a very happy bride. The bartenders even opened up and set out lots of bottles of beer so the conga line we took by it would not be parched. Being a vendor and performing at weddings thruout Chicago I have to say Hels was a breath of fresh air. Vendors, especially downtown, tend to have the city rush vibe when setting up and executing events. Not Hels. They were super cool to work with, teamed with the other vendors, and treated everyone fair. OK. It's not about the other vendors, but it makes a difference in the over all feel of an event when the vendors work together. Sandy and staff were professional, couorteous, and worked seamlessly with everyone to help deliver a grand evening to the clients. Food was awesome, the drinks were right on, cold and crisp. As a vendor doing gig's all year round and dealing with clients who expect nothing but exceeded expectations, I would recommend Hels in a heartbeat. I used Hel's Kitchen to cater my wedding this May, and they were absolutely fantastic. Actually, my coordinator Nikee Fellows single-handedly carries these 5 stars. Of course, the food was excellent and plentiful and other support staff responsive, etc. etc. But having Nikee as a calm, understanding professional who made sure she knew my vision and worked with me every step of the way made planning a wedding from 700 miles away almost easy (almost). She coordinated with the other vendors and made note of little details and remembered them in the craziness of the wedding itself. The days leading up the wedding saw their share of unexpected events, but Nikee was unfazed, extremely helpful, and as always, a cheerful pleasure to be around. I give her my highest recommendation without reservation; Hel's Kitchen is lucky to have an employee like her. As far as Hel's Kitchen itself, they had good food though probably only 4 stars on that criteria alone. I think the open bar was good, they even served a custom mixed drink recipe I gave them. Toward the end of the night they closed the bar because they had stopped washing cups even though there was still liquor, but I ask for a time extension and I think they managed to do it for an extra service charge. read more

For full disclosure I feel I should mention that I'm a friend of the family that owns Hel's Kitchen, though that in no way is influencing my review. Hel's catered our wedding of roughly 160 people on 11/24/12 at the Newberry Library in downtown Chicago. The best way to communicate how much I appreciated Hel's Kitchen is to say that my wife and I didn't have a single worry throughout the planning, wedding, or follow-up. Preparing food for 160 people is difficult, but they knocked it out of the park. I can't tell you how many compliments my wife and I have received on the food at our wedding, and this is coming five days following our wedding date. In our first meeting with Hel's after we had decided on a venue, I was impressed with the knowledge that they had about our location. Sitting there, our contact went through the entire location in his head, even considering where the windows were and which direction they faced. Coming late in the year and having a late wedding it ended up not making a difference, but having a caterer consider light exposure during the wedding is the sign of someone who has tremendous attention to detail. It was their suggestion to put our head table in a certain location in the room, as the windows behind it had a beautiful view down a street. The staff during the wedding was great too. We never had lines at the bars, the dinner service was quick, no one had to ask for anything because it was right there when it needed to be. We even threw them a few curveballs, making a few minor day of changes, and they handled everything perfectly. Work with Hel's and I promise you will not need a wedding planner. They coordinated with everyone, kept everything on schedule and were very laid back in working with us. Honestly, my wife and I walked into Hel's not having an idea about the food that we wanted. Their menu is massive, but they also made it very easy by suggesting different things that are popular and thing that go well together. In my opinion, they had great options no matter what your budget. Hel's Kitchen has been in the business for a while and it shows in every aspect. Julie helped me put together a luncheon for 85 people that accommodated the tastes of the adult guests as well as the children, and graciously worked with me to tweak the menu to perfection. We used Hel's for our wedding reception and they exceeded our expectations! Our idea was to do a country themed wedding, but they didn't have a menu that could fit our theme, so they completely customized a menu to fit our needs and everything was amazing! Their food is fresh and delicious, their set up was beautiful and elegant. Have ordered from Hel's many times for a large corporation in Highland Park. This past catered event left much to be desired. when I contacted "Tinder" this morning, a manager for Hel's and shared my disappointment she seemed less then interested in my feedback. Hel's Kitchen catered our 8.31.12 wedding, and I can't say enough good things! The food was absolutely delicious (in fact, my new husband and I are still eating the leftovers!), and we've gotten so may comments to that effect from our guests! In fact, one friend requested I bring her some of the leftover chicken piccata because she hadn't had enough at the wedding! :) Linda N. was our coordinator, and she could not have been sweeter or more helpful. I probably emailed her at least 2-3 times a day as the wedding got closer, and she always got back to me promptly with either an email or a phone call or both! She was extremely helpful and knowledgable, and never made me feel as though my questions were stupid. We had a lot of DIY things involved with the wedding, including having a friend make our cake, another do our flowers, etc., and she was more than happy to work with them and be in collaboration to make sure everything went smoothly. Overall, our entire experience with Hel's Kitchen lived up to all the rave reviews we'd read about them, and we're so glad we used them. From the reasonable prices to the helpful and accomodating staff to the delicious food, we couldn't have been happier. Highly recommend! read more

I used this caterer for our company holiday party last week. Our theme was "Food From Around the World" and honestly, all the food was awesome! They were able to feed 200+ colleagues including vegetarians and colleagues from diverse cultures - and they didn't even use a kitchen. Will Borris and his service staff were very friendly - yet professional and accommodating -- truly a pleasure to work with! Will had substituted one of the appetizers I had ordered (chorizo & cream cheese stuffed jalapenos) since "it was not up to their standards" and replaced it with chorizo stuffed dates wrapped in cured bacon which turned out to be an excellent substitution. My colleagues are still raving about all the food a week after the event. I will definitely use Hel's Kitchen Catering for all my company events. read more
