We LOVE Heifer!!! We've given money as a family to this organization for a few years, so seeing it up close was fantastic!!! They have a little scavenger hunt activity for the kids to do, that get them up close and reading all the exhibits. It's very hands-on and child friendly. On the hour they give tours of the building next door, and you can learn what they did to earn LEED Platinum in how they built this very echo friendly building. It's very interesting. There is a cafe to order food. There are tables with coloring activities for the kids. Complimentary coffee is available in the gift shop! This is a must see if you're in Little Rock. Crossing the Clinton Pedestrian Bridge was neat too. It's so pretty at night! read more

At CVS in Hicksville NY. 2 young students were inside doing a charity display for Heifer. Many questions I asked were answered. I note that not only do they work with getting animals to those in need , but also bees / hives - the later is a donation of 35.00 . You give all your information and then THERES THE CATCH! Seems they only have monthly or yearly subscriptions when you sign up to pay. They only take credit cards - no cash at the charity stand. I expect it's probably different to cancel once set up. I was shown a website of which does show a spot for a one time donation. Likely once done many emails and other forms of request for more support and so, more money. I chose to decline because of these factors. As there are so many organizations out there all in need of support and it is good for anyone donating to check them out wisely. read more

BEWARE!!! I was mislead into a donation and have disputed the charge with AMEX. Approached on the street, I agreed to a one time charge of $40 and was told by the young man on the street, that prior to any future charges, I would receive a phone call to approve the charge, and at that time I could cancel. That same day when the initial donation was being verified by someone on the phone, I was told I would get billed monthly, WITHOUT a call.  At that time I told the young man, and the woman on the phone, that I did not agree to any of this and not to charge my card.  After numerous emails and calls to the company, they finally sent an email informing me they would credit the $40 and no further charges would be made. read more

I'll Always love the Heifer Project International. I use to volunteer here in college so it holds a special place in my heart I was also extremely grateful to be able to bring my son here as we live in Raleigh, NC and we don't have anything like it there. We caught the trolley to Heifer which drops you off directly in front in the building and you have to walk a short distance. The parking is on the other side and there are always spaces over there. When we walked in we were greeted by one of the volunteers who was extremely sweet. She recommended that we go and see the animals + gardens in the back which was a new addition since I last volunteered. She informed us that a large group was coming and she wanted us to be able to see everything. The Heifer Urban Farm was cool. We got a chance to see beets, goats, pigs, cows, roosters, chickens & llama's. It was smelly but such a great experience. We got a chance to see a baby goat eat from his mother. We also got a chance to walk through the garden which was awesome. Inside they have a scavenger hunt for children to participate in. We also took a tour of the place and visited the store! One of my favorites from there is the goat milk lotion. Overall great place for everyone and very educational. read more

I stumbled across Heifer International quite by accident on my trip to Little Rock Arkansas home of former President Clinton. Being an architect the building design intrigued me. I knew nothing of the building or the organization. Heifer is an International company that has very worthy goals to end world hunger. I was drawn there because of the design, what I didn't realize is this building is Platinum rated LEEDS design. For those of you that don't know LEED stands for green building leadership. LEED is transforming the way we think about how buildings and communities are designed, constructed, maintained and operated across the globe. LEED certified buildings save money and resources and have a positive impact on the health of occupants, while promoting renewable, clean energy. The main building @ Heifer International is a large curved building that is sited to follow the path of the sun thus maximizing the the use of natural light. The width along the curve is 62 feet with Windows on both sides that allow natural light to stream into the building. There are reflectors that allow the maximization of light and compensate for the change during the different seasons due to the angle on the horizon of the sun & the varying path. There is also a huge water tank in the stairwell that accumulates rainwater runoff for grey water use. As greywater contains fewer pathogens than domestic wastewater, it is generally safer to handle and easier to treat and reuse onsite for toilet flushing, landscape or crop irrigation, and other non-potable uses. The drinkable water comes from the Little Rock Utility company. The entire building has used recycled materials to minimize on garbage that has to go into landfills. Everything from steel, masonry, bricks, wood, glass...has been recycled into this beautiful building. Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend the free 1 hour tour as we drove here from Memphis and time didn't allow it, but I highly recommend coming to visit the building and the site and learn about Heilfer as they are a very worthy organization read more

I really enjoyed my time at the Heifer Int'l. I went to eat lunch and visit the building and was impressed by everything. The building is very cool and apparently all green and eco-friendly. The landscaping and grounds were nice to walk around--looks like they only used local or native plantings which is very responsible. Parking is easy. The cafe was excellent. The ingredients are all local and the menu lists the farmers/purveyors that supply the goods. The freshness was evident. I had the berry salad--which was one of the most beautiful and delicious salads I've ever eaten--and the cold cucumber dill soup. The prices are extremely reasonable. The gift shop is also great. With a focus on sustainability and handmade goods it's interesting to simply browse. I wanted to buy way more than my luggage could take so I found it difficult to purge down to the essentials. ;) Highly recommend Heifer Int'l if you are in the area. If you aren't, make it a destination. read more

We've visited Heifer multiple times, and our girls like it so much, they also come every summer with my in-laws. The work Heifer does has had a positive impact in dozens of countries since the 40's, and continues to help those most in need get the tools to build a community that can sustain itself, and then pass on the gift when they are able. These tools include livestock, biogas, and more. The integrated farming display with terraced farming, a biogas unit, pig barn, living fence and buffalo, trees, and draw mushrooms, tilapia pond, zero-grazing pen, gardens, composting and earthworm bins, and bee hives is my favorite display. Kids of all ages can participate in a scavenger hunt, and they receive a small Heifer pin as an award. The gift shop is top notch, with Fair Trade items. All items in the store are either made by people in poor countries as a way to earn a living, or to support those people. The gift shop is an excellent place to purchase gifts-especially gift for women and children. Heifer is well worth a visit to learn more about the organization and its charity work. If you're interested, all for a your of headquarters in the adjacent office building a few steps from the museum. They'll give a tour even for one person. read more

I gave to this organization late 2020 and felt pretty good about it so I decided to do another donation late 2021. THAT WILL BE THE LAST TIME I DONATE. Since my last donation, I have been bombarded with telemarketing calls. I explained to them that I really only make these types of donations at the end of the year. They just want my money and they want it NOW. These people do not take 'no' for an answer. They have gone from the top of my list of donation charities down to below the bottom. This company is 100% BS!!! The people who collect donations try and scam you into monthly payments, claiming there is no other option. Then once you agree to give them your information, they charge it without asking for an amount. They just assume you want to donate what they want you to. Listen, $40 isn't going to keep me from paying my mortgage this month, but the fact that they charged it without asking is a total scam job. If you have children and want to teach them about the value of giving, Heifer Project International is a great place to start. They have a catalog that children can look through. They can pick out animals (livestock is so lost on kids) to 'send' to families overseas. If you offer kids the opportunity to pick out something for someone else in place of one of their presents, 9 out of 10 will go for the cute bunny, chick, goat, or cow every time. My friends suggested this for a lunch get-together, and I was happy to try it, because I didn't even know that there is an amazing restaurant here. The food was delicious! And the experience of being on the Heifer International grounds is always delightful. There are signs directing you to the cafe once you arrive in the parking lot, which I found helpful, as this is a bit of a "complex." In the cafe, you order from a blackboard menu directly at the counter, and the cashier gives you a number to take to your table so that a waiter can give you the food. The dining space is open and airy, and you can see the lovely plant life outdoors as well as some of the educational space near the cafe. I ordered the berry salad, which at $5.99 is very reasonably priced. It includes assorted mixed berries, like strawberries and blueberries, blue cheese, and candied pecans (I asked them to hold the red onions). Also, you can add chicken for $1, which I did. I don't usually add chicken as a lot of times it is so bland and uninteresting, but this was delicious. Every aspect of the salad was great. The dressing was served on the side, and was a lovely berry vinaigrette. Everything my friends ordered looked absolutely delicious, too! When I return, I'll have to try what they had, starting with my friend's salmon au brie, which was smoked salmon with brie and bacon on sourdough bread with lettuce and apricot preserves (!). The margarita pizza (a personal size) was so great, my friend who ordered it said she didn't intend to eat the whole thing, but she couldn't stop. My other friend had the fettucini alfredo, and said it, too, was great. Diners bus their own tables, and sort everything for recycling, etc., at the stations. We joked that we felt guilty for taking more than one napkin when dining here as everything is very eco-conscious. The whole experience was very pleasant, and the food was delicious. I will definitely return... hopefully soon so I can take that smoked salmon sandwich and apply it to my face! :) read more

Great charity for Holiday giving. You donate money to this organization that gives livestock to qualified families in need(you can choose location or let greatest need be chosen for you). You can give as little as $10 for a share of livestock up to $5000 for a selection of goats,cattle,pigs, sheep,etc. The families must agree to raise the animals, breed them and in turn, give them to others in the village. A very worthwhile organization that helps people learn to survive on their own and learn a skill that will help them so much more than a handout. read more

I love the mission of this charity and I was excited to visit their world headquarters which are right behind the Clinton Center. It's free to tour the exhibits and the office building, which is a certified green building. We met a wonderful volunteer named Carl, who was very knowledgeable and friendly. They sent an unsolicited slick glossy tear-jerker fund raiser appeal to one of my children. In the fine print they mention that they're also going to "share" (read: sell) our info to others. I was pleasantly surprised. I vaguely knew about Heifer projects, and vaguely knew they were based out of this area of the country, but I decided to go because it was right next door to the Clinton library and because of the good reviews. I don't really know how to describe it, but it's more of a series of exhibits about the history of the organization, why/how/etc they do what they do, and what we as average Americans can do to help the planet. The complex (including the offices/organization headquarters) are totally eco-friendly. It is totally kid-friendly, but I also feel that adults will enjoy and learn as well. The exhibits are free, and there is a great cafe and a great store, with mostly reasonably priced items. I appreciated learning more about the organization's goal of curing hunger/poverty in sustainable areas (ie why they aren't in large parts of Africa, as there are no natural resources for sustaining the Heifer projects), and their criteria for programming (community need, lots of education, passing on their bounty, social/gender equality, etc.). The exhibits are free, as is the tour of the complex. I chose not to take the tour (this was my fourth museum/event of the day), but I did read about the eco-friendly building. read more
