Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village - Funeral hearse #1

    Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village

This time we checked out an "Experience" from our local library, which allows free admission. This program is great, and allows you to visit Meadowcroft, plus the Heinz History Center, and the Fort Pitt Museum. In the morning, we explored the visitor center and the Native American Village. We liked throwing the Atlatl, which launches big, spear-like darts at a fake deer target to see if you can get them to stick. Afterwards, we left the site to go have lunch about 15 minutes away, and then did a short hike at Cross Creek Lake, where we saw a historic Truss Bridge from 1881. We came back to Meadowcroft, and climbed the steps to the Rock Shelter. We had seen this before, but we were able to experience some excavation work with the staff and scientists. We saw a recent discovery of a chipped flint that was 3,000 years old. Afterwards, we finished exploring the rest of the property. We liked throwing axes, playing double ball, and some other games. The old museum part was slightly disappointing, as it smelled heavily of mold, and I didn't want to stay in the buildings because of the smell. Neat old coaches and wagons in there, but I saw them before, so we were in and out quickly. Lastly, we did the Historic Covered Bridge (looks like it was re-done recently with new wood), the school, church, blacksmith shop and log cabin. All pretty cool to see. Overall, a nice day here at Meadowcroft ... Cheers!

The geologist at the rock shelter was very interesting. There was a guest from Toronto who drove up from Wheeling to visit Meadowcroft. The conference center is still under construction. The bathrooms are open. Lots of stalls that are roomy. The gift shop was a great starting and ending point.

Philomenas Review…read more We used this catering company several times once we decided to use them for our wedding. We booked her one year in advance, and we used her for A New Year's Eve party, and for our wedding shower. These two events required only the food to be present, no service. At the original taste testing, the food was phenomenal as was at each event. Very flavorful and delicious, nothing was dry as it was quality food. The same can even be said about the food at our wedding for those that got it... We discussed our concerns with Amanda on several occasions that we had met. We did two separate taste testings to try a variety of foods, we drove there to pick up food several times, and we went there for tasting our signature drink. On top of that we had no less than 10 phone conversations and several emails discussing details of our wedding and the quality of service we expected. This is why the review has a poor rating. We get married one time in our lives, and the people from our wedding will remember how horrible the service was. We paid extra money for a "bartending service" who told our guests they were supposed to be there serving food. We asked Amanda if she had handled a wedding of this size before (300+ people) She assured us that they do 500 person events all the time. After my mother-in-law had to ask for salad at her table 6 times, and then ask for dressing another four times, we began to panic and realize Amanda over-promised and under delivered severely. In addition to this, the tables were supposed to be bussed and cleared, the plates were to be washed, none of this was done. The head table never got their glasses of water which remained upside down until we cleaned up the next day. We had less than 300 guests RSVP. We paid Philomena's for 310 guests worth of food. We had a total of 278 people attend our wedding, and she still ran out of food even though she insisted on several occasions that there would be more than enough food. She also said there will be several items left over and she would put out to go containers. Speaking of this, she said they would have plenty of time to kill while they were there and to give her things to do while she was there. She was entirely unprepared. When the bridal party walked in and they were still serving salad, we knew this was a disaster. When we spoke with Amanda the following day about the issues that we had, she tried to blame The fact they were unprepared because of the cookies in her area. She promised us that she would be putting out the cookies at the cookie table and never did! My family had to put them all out! We also gave her extra space at the venue as she was worried she wouldn't have enough. In addition to this disaster, I had to dismiss tables on my own wedding night, because Amanda did not bring enough help as clearly her bartenders we're supposed to be serving food, so then we were forced to shut down the bar so the guests could be served. There are several other details minor or large that I may be missing, but I am so upset and frustrated with how this turned out that people now remember our wedding as the wedding that was amazing except for the catering. If you want to use this company be sure to use them for only their food because that is all they are good for. Their services are sub par at best.

They researched, emailed, called, collected proposals, and vetted every vendor before presenting us options. They handled all communication and coordination with vendors all the way up to the wedding day. These two have such a feel for design. They used colors, textures, lighting, and accents to create the overall "modern boho, earthy vibe", we envisioned. They captured the very essence of our personalities, it was literally "so us!" Our favorite part of the planning process was our dinner & drinks where we hung out for hours catching up and discussing wedding plans. We became genuine friends throughout our time working together. They were always a text or call away. Sarah even saved the day when 2 vendors backed out, due to covid, a week before the wedding. A situation that would have made any couple breakdown, Sarah was quick to suggest solutions and had everything back on track by the end of the day!! Everything they did was absolutely above and beyond. Everything they touched turned to gold. IRIE was worth every cent we spent.
