Definitely can tell a lot of care is taken into getting flavors right and using quality ingredients. The people are friendly and the cafe is full of plants and has a nice vibe even just to sit down while waiting for your drink to be prepared. Love that they provide plastic alternative straws which is one of the harder things to recycle. :)

Ok.. McMaken's is an institution in Brookville... It's the only grocery.... and it's been there a…read morelong time. I went to school with one of the daughters and knew all of the kids... but that was a while ago and it doesn't influence my review. They do really well for an independant IGA store. They are large and carry a wide variety of items. They will order anything for you. Tom has been in the meat dept as long as I can remember. My dad always sought him out and I still do. Need a special cut... Tom will do it. Need fresh oysters... Tom will do it. Just want to say hi to a friendly face.... Tom will do it. You don't get service like this just anywhere. The downfall? Prices. It's well worth the short drive to Wal-Mart or Meijers to get better prices on every item. McMaken's probably has to pay more than these huge chains so the difference is understandable but in the current recession it's regrettable.

Dorothy Lane Market to the rescue.... An early morning trip found few in parking lot and fewer in store. Very nice offering of Strawberry Pies at about $20.00 per pie. Is is worth it? They offer a bit of fresh produce, as well as tons of canned and jarred food that I've never seen anywhere else. Honestly, I have an affinity for Mexican sweet, salty, and spicy candy. I eat asian tamarind candy often. This is why I came in here...and there was a big selection of candy that was priced at $1 per bag. Great price... especially for curious tastebuds.
