I got headshots done back in November, and they came out incredible! I was very nervous (tried to play it cool), and Moshe made the process easy and comfortable. He gave a lot of tips and guidance. You won't feel rushed, even when you ask a lot of questions, which I think I did (again, I was nervous). I received my photos with the touchups back quickly and still get compliments to this day. The headshots are a great investment, as I tried to take various types of photos that would align with different areas in my life (i.e. nonprofit professional, author, and small business owner.) IMHO, Moshe Zusman is the BEST headshot photographer in DC. I've sent numerous PR clients of mine to his studio through the years, and finally had him take a headshot of me just the other day. It's by far the best headshot that I've ever had taken of me. Also... Moshe is just a great, laidback guy who makes his subjects feel at ease. His studio is fabulous.. with great music playing as he's taking your picture... And if you need/want professional makeup, he brings in a great makeup artist who works her wonders in his relaxing downstairs lounge, which kind of feels like a Hollywood green room. You get what you pay for and Moshe is the best. Is it worth saving $50 for a photo that you use on Linkedin, or some other important site? I got a haircut, wore a nice suit, showed up early and was really impressed with his studio and this guy is a professional. He doesn't do weddings, he doesn't do fifty other things, but if you need a headshot, he's incredible, he knows every angle and how to make you look your very best. I'm giving this a two-star review, because of one VERY major criticism affecting my usage of the photo, which I'll get to in a moment. I'm a writer who was in need of a new headshot--one for the dustjacket of book (this will be important in a moment, so bear with me). After reading reviews of a number of photo studios, I chose Moshe Zusman -- hey, the Yelp! reviews are great! -- and made an appointment with a photographer named Aryeh. There was a bit of back-and-forthing, as my original appointment time got bumped and rescheduled, then moved back, but no worries: I needed a headshot quickly, and I was glad they were able to accommodate me, so I was happy to work with them and be flexible in my own schedule. And they were very nice about it. My experience at the studio with Aryeh was a good one -- like many reviewers here, I don't enjoy having my picture taken, and Aryeh put me at ease, and let me regularly check out the photos he was taking. We narrowed it down to the permissible three, and I was very happy with the quality of my photos. However . . . During the course of my session, I mentioned that I needed the shot for a book dustjacket. "Oh," Aryeh said, "you'll need to pay for the permissions to clear the photo for publication on a book." Well. THAT information was nowhere on their website -- or, if it was, it wasn't readily available or easy to find.* That would likely have seriously affected the choice I made for having my headshot taken. I asked how much that might cost, and was told it wouldn't be bad -- about $300 dollars for the rights to use the photo. Now, I'm already paying $300 to have the photo taken; adding the permissions onto it was an unexpected cost. But okay. I would deal with the clearance issue once I received my photos. Later in the day, I received an e-mail informing me that if I wanted to use my photo on a dustjacket for a book, I had to purchase clearance rights to use the photo for 1 year or 5 years, or I could just buy the rights to use the photo for as long I pleased. (I need a photo I can use any time, so I don't want it for 1 year or 5 years.) The costs, I was told, were: 1 year for $350 5 years for $1,200 Buyout for $2,000 Again, NOWHERE on their website was this information made available, or easily accessible. It was also nowhere near the "about $300" I was told during my session. Further, $2,000 is cost prohibitive--and seems unreasonable as well. (Aryeh apologized that "it is more costly than I remembered." Boy, I'll say.) My low score, then, is driven by this experience. I paid $300 for a headshot I can't use, due to an unexpected---and unreasonably high--clearance fee. Instead, I started over and went to a competitor (who I was very pleased with) whose standard practice is to not charge anything for me to use my own image. I'd advise Moshe Zusman to make it VERY clear on their website that this is their policy, and say up front how much it charges for the clearance rights, and then let the customer decide if they want to encumber this additional VERY high fee. For this reason alone, I can't recommend MZ to other writers who may need headshots, since we almost always need them for more than just a year or two or five. It's a shame, really, because I did like their work. It's a pity I can't use it for what I needed. * ETA: A detailed read on the MZ website shows that it *does* mention under its "Your Files" section that there might be a cost to use your photo "on products for sale and/or books applies and may incur additional fees so let us know if you need more information about it." Again, I would STRONGLY advise MZ to ensure it not only makes this information *much* more readily available but that they also clearly list the *actual costs* on the website. I would also urge MZ to ensure that its photographers have ACCURATE information on hand regarding the costs so that there are no surprises. As I mentioned earlier, I would likely NOT have chosen Moshe Zusman for my needs had this info been made clear up front--at least not at the prices they're charging. Sorry, guys. read more
