I…read morewas there to pick up a candle I won from an event, but I ended up getting another one for myself. The store was busy as there were three candle making events going on, but the staff was still so nice and attentive. I walked around for a little bit and decided on the pineapple, sage, and anise candle. It smelled amazing and I was like I gotta get this and I did! One of the ladies told me that she poured not only this candle, but the candle I won herself. It is so great that the staff takes such a big part in the candle making process and they are proud of it! Another thing that they are proud of is the fact that they are female, Black, and locally owned. Also, they love and support the LBGTQ+ community with not only sporting the flag, but donating proceeds of certain candles to support groups. I love this and I will bebbavk not only for this, but because of the amazing candles!! Thank you for all you do for the community Hummingbird!

I had walked around Hummingbird once when I first moved to Fayetteville and loved that it gives…read moresuch a happy feeling just being there. It is decorated with cheery colors and fun backgrounds for selfies. The scents are all lined up and sorted into categories under the classy looking cloches. I love it. When I saw that they offered classes to make a candle myself I said...sign me up! This was a class that took maybe two hours or so and was really laid back and fun. You can bring adult beverages with you, if you choose to. Also, if you bring the glass vessel back in you get a discount on your next candle! I will say that it is a little pricey, but I feel like it was well worth it. We arrived promptly and were greeted so warmly by the employees. There was another couple doing the class with us, and I feel like full attention was on all of us equally. Alex was the Chandler that oversaw our class. A chandler is a candle maker, and she told us that at the end of the class, we would be considered chandlers also. How cool is that! We learned some great information about the business itself, and how the owner has a huge focus on building a supportive and inclusive work environment. We then started learning all kinds of candle facts and getting into the nitty gritty. Everything you need is laid out for you when you arrive, so you can just get started! First, we were asked to smell ALL the scents that are set up on the long wall. They are numbered, and you go through without looking at the name of them. On a little sheet, you mark the ones you like with a circle, the ones you don't like with an X and the ones you love with a heart. I may have taken this part too seriously, as I went back and smelled some several times, while Husband picked what he wanted within minutes. Next, we picked the glass vessel that we were going to make our candles in. There are different sizes and colors to choose from. Once we knew the scents we wanted, and what we were pouring them into, we were back at our tables, and this is when the chemistry class started! We went one by one and were told the top middle and bottom notes of each of the scents that we picked. I wanted to mix two together and was told that since they were in the same scent family, that they would work well together! We picked the wick that we wanted, and something that I thought was cool is that we were given the opportunity to write a message on them that will be released as the wick burns. I am a sucker for cool details. Then we measured out just enough of the scented oil and the wax and we started mixing it together with a little whisk to get the scent mixed evenly. Then we all talked and hung out a little while we waited for Alex to clean them up and to melt them a little also and make them look all perfect. The candles were packaged up for us, and away we went! Later at home, the two we made and the two we purchased all smell amazing, and really fill the room with the scents. I will for sure return for more!

Wandering Lark is a local Burlington gem, and I can't believe that I am first to review them! If…read moreyou like candles or know someone who does and you enjoy supporting small women-owned businesses, please check out their storefront or shop their products via their website. They also carry their candles in a number of gift shops throughout the US . Wandering Lark is run by two inspiring women - Laura and Julie. I have had the pleasure of speaking with Laura on several occasions and she is the sweetest, most genuine individual and truly made me feel like a friend and neighbor. Being new to the area, her warmth and inviting nature made me feel more at home. Perhaps most importantly, Wandering Lark's small-batch, hand-poured soy candles are amazing! They use all American grown soy wax, cotton wicks, and high-quality phthalate-free fragrances. I've bought several of their classic jars which are made of beautiful blue glass and feature signature brown labels with their hand-drawn designs, as well as a few travel tins. In addition to the classic jars, every moth they feature a special jar that is only available for a limited time - often these jars are collaborations with local potters. Now I am fairly picky when it comes to fragrances, yet I have liked practically all of the Wandering Lark scents I've smelled (all 30+)! In addition to their bestselling scents, they feature seasonal fragrances. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I wanted to buy every single Fall and Winter fragrance they offer. Visiting the storefront studio is a great way to test out fragrances before purchasing, but you can also sign up for their email newsletter, which not only gets you exclusive coupon codes and early access to their monthly jars, but also allows you to enter their drawing to become a candle tester. I was fortunate to get chosen to be a candle tester last holiday season, and it was such a treat to get several travel size candles in the mail to review. During COVID-19, their storefront has limited hours, so I recommend checking for the latest hours on their website or contacting them via Instagram or Facebook (they are very active on social media and are quick to respond to messages). When things are back to normal, they plan on hosting candle making workshops in their studio and I can't wait to attend. I am a big fan and hope you'll check them out!

Once you start it goes by very quickly and next thing you know you're done! Takes about 3hrs for the candle to set and they let us know when your candle is finished. You can come back and they'll refill it for $10 with the same scent or a different scent.
