Haywood County is a great animal shelter! The staff is very kind, and we're easily able to find the owners of the lost dog we found!

Where do I start? Well, I can't start with my local version of the Bumpus Hounds, because despite…read morethe fact that they need to be controlled, they are not feline. Ditto for the Great Pyrenees twins that mysteriously vanished when their beauty took a second seat to upkeep. A good starting place is the moment when people who get tired of a cat dump the responsibility of that animal right in the lap of the general public, namely neighbors. You would be surprised at the societal standing of these dumpers- they may be well off, pious, have other pets, superstitious about black mammals, or all four. You will be surprised that they could be so callous. For about ten years now, I have taken care of about seven cats. Two were struck by cars, three moved on, and two currently live with me. That is not counting their kittens. They all had or have names. Misa and Tom are my current friends. They are lovers. They have access to outside shelter. I have a FeralVilla, and have made shelters in the past as well. Misa now comes into my house when it is too cold outside. Taking care of stray or wild cats is expensive. We have spent hundreds of dollars on these cats this past decade. When Misa approached us last fall of 2017, we tried to ignore her. Snowbelle's death had taken a toll on us. We noticed that Misa was pregnant in the late winter of 2018. In the spring of 2018, Misa gave birth to five kittens on our property. We had to purchase litter boxes, litter, scoops, food, give them water and shelter, wash their bedding, protect them, and take them to the vet. It cost us a lot of money. We knew we had to take action. In the past, we had heard about free services to fix cats. My husband decided to call up HAWA- Haywood Animal Welfare Association. Their Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) program helped us so much. All services were extensive and free. They fixed MIsa and Tom, who had obviously mated. HAWA even offered to fix their progeny when they were of age to be fixed. All of our kittens were eventually adopted by friends. We felt good knowing that HAWA was around. Last summer, Black Hayate came back. A preteen of Misa's, she had shooed him off when her new kits were born. We called Donna, one of two Donnas who worked for HAWA. The Donnas are angels. Donna told us that HAWA had gotten new directors. The new director shut down the TNR program, impounded all trapping materials, released all the volunteers (including the Donnas), and refused to ask for any grants for the 2019 TNR year. Propaganda was spread, and maybe politics are involved. HAWA, also known as Haywood Spay/Neuter, is friends with the county animal shelter. HAWA never responded to the letter that I addressed to the directors expressing how the TNR program helped us dearly. So, the fired volunteers formed Lend Us Your Ear, a team that fixes cats, gives them medication, a rabies shot, and a flea dip. They come to your house, the cat is handed over or humanely trapped, the cat is serviced, and then released back onto your property. If a cat gets an illness, they will take care of that, too. I told you that they are angels. LUYE's status as a non-profit is pending. Donations are needed. Forty bucks is the exact cost of fixing one cat. Call LUYE if you have a wild cat or strayish cat. The cat will be fixed and better cat and human society. If you need a mouser for your barn that you are responsible for and will not be a whim until a prettier cat comes along, you can call LUYE to see if anyone left a cat behind. Look for the "Black Cat Forum", an upcoming meeting that LUYE is going to have with the public. Please support LUYE! Get the word out. This review is dedicated to the rough, male version of Misa and the gorgeous Maine coon that we see from time to time. And to Misa, my familiar.
