I'm a confirmed, lifelong book lover (my mom was a librarian, so that tracks lol), so I was super…read morehappy to discover the Wailuku library. It's an historic building, designed by Maui-born architect CW Dickey, and opened in August 1929. It was the first public library in Maui County, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Inside you'll find a great selection of books in all genres, with varying displays of selected works that relate to current events or celebrations, and a staff of friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful librarians eager to help you get the most out of your library experience. There are adult and keiki reading rooms, a rack of books for sale (proceeds benefit the library), magazines, and much more. New automated checkout stations are super convenient and easy to use and offer you the choice of printed or emailed receipt for checked out items. As with all branches of the state library system, you can use their app to request and place holds on items and pick them up here (or any other location). The app also lets you see your due dates for checked out items, renew any if needed, and see where you are in line for items you've requested. The Wailuku library may not be physically huge, but it's definitely punching above its weight and providing great service to the community.

Seriously one of the cutest libraries I've ever been to. I can't believe I've never been to this…read morelibrary. I've driven by a million gazillion times and today was the first time I've ever been inside. It clearly is historic and what a gem. Parking is on the street or in the County parking lot across the street. There is a crosswalk and a ramp in the back for handicapped and strollers. I have fond memories of going to my local hometown library as a child so I hope to do the same for my little blessing. The librarians and everyone were so nice. There is also a little one floor elevator to get down to the keiki area. I love that they have their own space. It is super cute. I can see so many more trips in the future with my little one. Not the fanciest library but still wonderful and for someone who loves books like me, it is one of my happy places.

Gretchen in the children's part of the library is a cruel and inhumane person. Patience, Peace, and…read moreRESPECT are the qualities we need in a space that children are welcomed into. I understand libraries are known as 'quiet' places. But these should also be safe places for children. This is a free place for children to come for parents and families who may be low income and deserve to have access to resources such as these. I'm DISGUSTED at the level of disrespect and abuse that has been directed towards parents in this space by Gretchen. It is abuse to talk to anyone in the manner in which she has and is completely unacceptable and inappropriate. Especially in the presence of children... I was astonished to hear that so many people have similar experiences and that is absolutely unacceptable. We want to share the Aloha experience with everyone and want to make everyone feel comfortable and SAFE bringing their children to a PUBLIC LIBRARY. This situation is sick and needs to be addressed. Disappointed is an understatement.

A beautiful, open-air courtyard is at center. The birds seem to love it almost as much as I. A surrounding lanai has lots of seating, including an area with tables. A large meeting room is available by reservation for community groups. On approaching the building, patrons are greeted by a banner promoting the free WiFi access within.

Fabulous library can get you almost anything you want to read. Very short turnaround on ordersread more

WOW! This cute little public library really was a lot nicer than I had expected!…read more What do you do when you need to charge your cell phone, and use your computer to file some reports? The Molokai Public Library of course! While working on Molokai, upon finishing up a few jobs, I had to file/close some work orders, as well as charge up my phone so I decided to head over to the Molokai public library. Unfortunately on Wednesday, the operating library hours are later in the day, so I had to go someplace else to kill off sometime (you will are another review of this). When the library finally opened, I bum rushed it there so I could charge up my phone, as well as filing and sending up my reports electronically. Inside the library, I noticed there were about 5 computer stations, a copy machine, & tons of reading materials. I did not use any of their computers or copy machine, as I was basically there to grab some free electricity for my cell. phone, enjoy the quiet environment, and of course cool off with the ice cold air conditioning in the library. Lol! A little history about the Molokai Library, as I looked it up on the internet - The Molokai Library was designed by architect Harry K. Stewart, the building has 3,627 sq. ft. and is located in central Kaunakakai, and the library serves as a hub for many community activities. The library first opened on May 21, 1937 (I noticed the historical sign marker - see my pic). The Molokai Public Library also participates in "Ohana Readers", which is a literacy program that focuses on reading with family as an affiliate program of Dolly Partonʻs Imagination Library. The program offers high-quality, age-appropriate Imagination Library books each month to children who are under the age of five. In a small sleepy town like Molokai, it's great to have a place like this so they can connect to the rest of the world!
