Hawaii Opera Theater

The Honolulu Opera Theater (HOT) has concerts, plays, and of course...opera. We went to watch Mozart's Marriage of Figaro. I worry about the modern productions taking away from the historic specificity, but this production was well made with period dress, props, and set design. I recommend arriving at least 30 minutes early to avoid parking traffic. The valet parking was $25 and regular parking was $8. The concert hall itself is decorated with modern wall art and art deco lighting. The carpet, chairs, and restrooms could use some updating, but overall it was a comfortable experience. During intermission you can order drinks and take them back into the hall. Some people pre-ordered their drinks before the show starts so they were ready at intermission. The bathroom line during intermission war pretty long and took about 10 minutes to die down.

The Tales of Hoffman, the last opera written by the great Jacques Offenbach, was actually never seen by the creator himself, who passed away before the first production of it was completed. Because of this and the fact it has been described many times as a "fantastical opera" there leaves much to the imagination and, have had many renditions performed. An entertaining tale of Hoffman's three great loves. Who can resist not wanting to see this, and relating to bits of it. Tonite we were treated to this delightful rendition by Hawaii Opera Theatre (HOT). This opera also marked the end of an era, after more than 28 productions spanning over 20 years, it is the last opera Artistic Director H. Akina has directed before retiring. Akina, the first-ever Hawaii-born artistic director of the Hawaii Opera Theatre, is a graduate of Punahou High School and the Freie University, Berlin's graduate program. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Preis Honoree in Arts. Thank you HOT for such an entertaining evening. Thank you YELP for the opportunity! Thank you to Director Henry Akina for the many years and contributions in shaping H.O.T. to the world class opera theatre that we know today. Mahalo i Malama 'oe a hui hou. Thank you and take good care of yourself until we meet again.

I went here to see Cinderella last night... the show was cheap. It was cute for what it was but I would call that a musical not an opera BUT I did love love the voices of the prince and step mother. Cinderella's wasn't bad I still liked it but I'm just stating my opinion. She still had a beautiful voice. Now the venue itself I think is beautiful. It was my first time seeing something like that in Hawaii. I'm not from here so it was exciting being there. I'll definitely come back to see another show

First and foremost thank you Yelp, Emi, Cathy T, Maka of the Orange Shoes, Raelyn and HOT for an outstanding event. Well planned, well organized and well executed. I could not believe how many Yelpsters were there. Many familiar faces and many not so familiar but they are the up and coming group. The opera was based on a fictional serial killer named Sweeney Todd, FKA Benjamin Barker and his sinister partnership with Mrs. Lovitt. The Demon Barber of Fleet Street back in London to avenge the loss of his lovely wife and the loss of some 12 years of his life. Quite the story, fabulously dark and malevolent. For those of us who are Johnny Depp fans this was made into an Oscar winning movie directed by Tim Burton and costaring Helen Bonham Carter in 2007. The Hot performance did the opera proudly and for a dress rehearsal it was fun and entertaining. I hope they do well. Thank you again Yelp for introducing so many to HOT.

Carmen program and ticket

I've been a season ticket holder since 1994. Opera is the perfect combination of classical music, drama, stagecraft and a communal experience with an appreciative audience. I've never seen an opera outside of Honolulu so I can't compare the quality of an HOT opera to what you would see elsewhere. However, most of the principal singers in HOT productions are from around the world. Opera singers, like everyone else in the world, probably love to come to Hawaii for a couple of weeks, so HOT can attract a talented roster of singers. For those who have never attended an opera and want to see one, I suggest waiting for an opera with music you've heard, like Carmen, Madame Butterfly or Rigoletto. It may be more enjoyable seeing the music from Looney Tunes or a TV ad come to life. The orchestra seats are closer to the action than the balcony seats so if you want to see the singers up close, you may want to sit closer to the stage in the orchestra section. I think the sound quality is better in the balcony seats, but that's my preference. Come a little early as the walk from the parking in the Blaisdell lot to the concert hall can take 10 minutes depending on where you park. There are concession stands for food and drinks if you forget to eat before you come. HOT hosts "lanai lectures" before the opera where a speaker will give a run down of the opera and provide historical context and some insights. Sometimes, there is entertainment before the opera. Tonight, before and during the first intermission for Carmen, a trio (or was it a quartet?) played Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelli jazz tunes in the hall entrance in keeping with the opera's gypsy theme. Most of all, enjoy!

Glass of wine before a performance of the Makado
Cheryl Marie S.

Mikado! Mikado! Mikado! I love the "Mikado", and most of those who have seen it have formed a similar love. After it's opening at London's Savoy Theater in 1885, it became one of the longest running shows in theater history. It's been said that since that time, a performance of the "Mikado" has been produced somewhere in the world every day. So what's all the fuss about? Well, even though it's set in (mythical) Japan, it's not about Japan at all. The "Mikado" is W.S. Gilbert's satirical put-down of government bureaucracy everywhere - all told through a silly story of an itinerant musician attempting to marry a Japanese schoolgirl. Here is a short summary of the Act 1 (no spoilers!). A wandering minstrel Nanki-Poo has fallen in love with schoolgirl Yum-Yum, who is unfortunately (for Nanki-Poo) engaged to her guardian Ko-ko. When Nanki-Poo learns the Mikado (the emperor) has condemned Ko-Ko to die for the capital crime of flirting (!), Nanki-Poo rushes back to Titipu (Yum-Yum's home town) to claim his beloved. But there he learns the Mikado has pardoned Ko-Ko and made him the Lord High Executioner, the only soul in the empire allowed to execute people. However, despite his bragging, Ko-Ko is a whimp who wouldn't hurt a fly. The Mikado informs Ko-Ko (via an email!) that unless someone is executed by the end of the month, Ko-Ko will have to execute himself, a somewhat difficult undertaking! What a dilemma. Then Ko-Ko finds out way out He discovers Nank-pu, being despondent over the loss of Yum-Yum, tries to kill himself,. So Ko-Ko makes him an offer he cannot refuse. Please wait until the end of the month, and I will perform the execution myself (so much easier!). In the mean time, you can marry Yum-Yum. A deal made in heaven! Yet then they all discover that if a married man is executed, the wife must be buried alive, an event none of the three wishes to occur, especially Yum-Yum. Another complication emerges when a woman in the Mikado's court, Katisha, arrives on the scene and announces that Nanki-Poo is her fiancé, and that he has fled her embraces. Well, this should give you an idea of W. S. Gilbert's zany plot. HOT artistic director Henry Akina has brought the production into the 21st century. He tweaked the dialog to introduce references to Starbucks and I-pads (even to Yelp!). To be sure Gilbert would have hated this (he would chew out his actors for even mispronouncing a single word of his lyrics). But the audience seemed to like the modernizing. I thought Mr. Akina made a brilliant move by clothing the Ladies Chorus in the modern Japanese hipster girl style of Harajuku (or perhaps this was the decision of costume designer Anne Namba). This works perfect for the school girls in the play. The Gentlemen's Chorus was portrayed as Japanese tourists, which the audience liked but I thought less successful. The star of the Mikado is always Ko-Ko, and Curt Olds played him in a wonderful modern style - somewhat foppish, very much full of himself, but also likeable. You could almost feel the audience smile when Curt's Ko-Ko made his entrances. Sasha Asmar is a wonderful Yum-Yum. Diminutive and petite Sasha allows Yum-Yum to be her pixie self as she dances about the stage. To my great delight, Ms Asmar possesses a wonderful and powerful soprano voice, which is a must for anyone playing Yum-Yum. The best duets in the show come when Naki-Poo (Joshua Kohl) sings with Yum-Yum. Joshua's strong baritone matches Sasha Asmar's soprano perfectly, as it must. Veteran HOT performer and local resident Jamie Offenbach makes a fine and imperious Mikado, and I loved local actress Megan Mount as Peep-Bo (don't you just love Gilbert's character names!). I think Anne Namba, HOT's own costume designer, deserves a special shout-out. Her Harajuku costumes were adorable. Ms. Namba has recently worked with a "Madame Butterfly" production in Europe and HOT will be bringing this one to stage soon. I can't wait. I must say a word about the orchestra. They did a fine job with Sir Arthur Sullivan's score. Sir Arthur, if you didn't know, was a musical genius. The music in the "Mikado" still sounds as modern as this morning. It's impossible to believe that the score is 130 years old. Well there you have it. I deducted a star because the sound quality suffered in the dress rehearsal, but I'm sure this will be corrected. I also did not like Katisha's portrayal as a fat woman. In the original production, Katisha is a beautiful woman who could not find love because men are afraid of her. A key element of the last scene comes when Katisha does find love and overcomes her sadness. For me this didn't work in the current production. This is my opinion, of course, and many in the audience enjoyed Katisha. Ok, enough of my rambling. Please, please, please, go see the "Mikado" if you possibly can. I know you will enjoy it.

Very nice and good audience.

Friday nights performance of Siren Song was a little different including the venue location. Not your typical opera. The place in Kakaako was hot, no AC, just a very large ceiling fan and portable fans to circulate the hot air :-(. The chairs was folding metal chairs with a little cushion and uncomfortable. One of my gf that went to the Sunday show said she paid $50 said she would have rather paid that amount and sit way in the back of the concert hall with comfortable chair, with AC and cleaner location. The music was a bit too loud you couldn't hear what they were singing, which was supposed to be in English but could barely understand. I love going to the opera to support art, the performers and listening the performers various beautiful tone of voices. Looking forward to the last show of the season, Sweeney Todd in April.

Awesome seats on the floor, right in the middle! Thanks yelp! Can't wait to review it!

Just saw the Sweeney Todd @HOT, loved it! Even though I knew the story from the movie, it doesn't beat seeing it as a play! Acting, vocals, set, lighting are top notch! If you get a chance definitely one to see, thank you HOT for the experience

Wonderful production of "Mikado". Kudos to Curt Olds (Ko-ko), Victoria Livengood (Katish), and Jaime Offenbach (Mikado). Loved the local references in the dialog.

OVERALL SATISTFACTION: 10 of 10. 5 of 5 stars, Na ka…read moreoi...simply da bes! Keeping in mind that 1. I love live music, theater and big screen films. And 2. I haven't resided in the islands since the mid-90s. With that said, I have been here for several shows and I purposely flown in for some and other were just the lowest of consolation prizes for having to fly away from loved ones due to my job taking me to another "twist my arm" experience = Stay on Oahu. I joke of course, but in earnest, growing up with the lights of Broadway and hundreds of concert venues nearby, I take my theater experiences very seriously and the Hawaii Theater meets any and every want/need one could dream of. For me it exceeds most. Please allow me to define... MY EXPERIENCES: I have been to a Christmas show, on my birthday, featuring Amy Hanaiali'i and, the much beloved and missed, Willie K (R.I.P.), which included a wonderful meet and greet. On another visit to HNL I just happened to be around for a Beach Boys show and was fortunate enough to get a ticket for it. And most recently, I flew in for a showing of The Princess Bride which featured a meet and greet of Cary Elwes. AT THE TOP: The President of the Hawaii Theater, Gregory Dunn is super humble, very polite and amazingly professional in every aspect. Best of all, he gets involved in the pre-show activities be it guiding folks to where they need to be or ensuring we understand the process of a meet and greet. Ya gotta love when there is no job below those in charge. He sets an example that many could benefit from if their eyes are truly open. SECURITY: If you have been to downtown Honolulu, you know it hasn't been a place that gets touted around the globe for it's cleanliness or safety. HPD has had their hands full over the years. Stores may have closed and some issues still exist, but overall I feel that the area has been improving greatly and adding to the return of a safer feeling neighborhood is the Hawaii Theater's security team. Yes, they are the most amazing group of people that one could want to see at an event. These guys are the, literally, the muscle that keeps things in order and flowing, from bag checks to ensuring reentry folks have wristbands. They operate like a finely tuned engine. As a concert goer that has been to well over 500 shows globally, I recognize these folks as the best. I will even go as far as to say that actually recognize some of them since my last visit a couole years back, which means that the team is sticking together. With that stated, not once have I had any safety concerns with these guys on duty... and still downtown can be questionable at times. STAFF OF THE THEATER: From the box office staff to those assigned to scan your tickets and give out VIP wristbands, these folks know how to keep the lines moving. Once inside there are strategically placed individuals, as one would expect. Folks there to give you direction to restrooms or concessions and then you have the ushers, those folks who are much more than a uniformed someone with a flashlight who is unfamiliar with the venue layout. These folks are amazing, they will get you to your seat in a timely, professional manner. Last but not least, are the bartenders... the fashionable, handlebar mustachioed bartender I met a few shows back was here again... and I always find him to be a terrific conversationalist (when time allots), incredibly professional and truly represents the venue as best as any one could. Put all these compliments together under one roof and you get one of the best theater experiences you could hope to ever find. You should come to downtown and find out for yourself... and you'll be a repeat offender, like me, (END NOTE: I fly in from the mainland for touring shows I could easily opt to catch on the mainland, and for a cheaper overall hit to the wallet. The Hawaii Theater, as defined above, is truly the deciding factor).

Walking into the Hawai'i Theatre, you're instantly transported into another era. An era of soft…read moreelegance and timeless artistry. From the moment you pass through the doors, you're surrounded by a blend of old-world elegance and Hawaiian warmth. Built in 1922, the theatre has hosted everything from silent films and Broadway plays to concerts and Hula performances. Today it seats about 1,400 guests, offering an intimate experience where every seat feels close to the stage. The acoustics are excellent, the seats are comfortable, and the staff and volunteers are friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. There's also a small bar and lounge with high-tops, perfect for enjoying a drink and conversation before the show. Inside the theater, you see tall, fluted Corinthian-style columns that are richly detailed. The curved arch overhead is decorated with mosaic-style tiles in warm tones, and I absolutely LOVE the lush deep red velvet curtains that frame the stage. They add so much warmth and elegance. Having attended many shows throughout the years, I've always been mesmerized by the mural above the stage and decided to do some Googling while waiting for the show to begin. I learned it's Lionel Walden's Glorification of the Drama. The painting depicts a grand procession of mythic figures -- a golden-robed muse in her chariot, attendants, musicians, a lion handler -- all celebrating the power of theater. The central figure, often interpreted as the Personification of Drama, leads the way. Knowing that part of the mural was once lost to water damage and later painstakingly restored makes it even more meaningful. Parking is easy at the municipal garage on Bethel Street, just a block away. The short walk is now well-lit, a welcome improvement from years past when it was dark and sketchy. Entertaining audiences for over 100 years, the Hawaii Theater is a recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Attending a show here, you're not just watching a performance, you're also living and breathing a beautiful piece of Hawaii's historic culture.

It's immersive, thoughtful, and has a little bit of history. Once inside the theater, the stage design continues that experience, reflecting King David's travels with what feels like carefully collected souvenirs from his travels around the world. I loved how the history was woven in so seamlessly. It actually sent me down a rabbit hole learning more about Hawaii's last monarch afterwards haha. The show itself? Phenomenal. Aki and Ken are not only incredibly skilled magicians; both masters of sleight of hand and parlor magic respectively, but also genuinely hilarious. Their chemistry carries the entire experience, and they stayed perfectly in theme with the Hawaiian Victorian atmosphere in the magic they performed. I won't spoil anything, but I will say I was left completely mind-blown. There were moments that genuinely didn't seem possible, and just when you think you've caught your breath, another reveal hits. It just kept building, which is the type of magic I really enjoy watching. The venue is intimate and seats about 60 guests. There truly isn't a bad one in the house. Being that close makes everything even more impressive because there are no trap doors, no mirrors, nothing to hide behind. The magic happens right in front of you, and somehow that makes it even harder to believe. They also do a great job with audience participation, which adds to the fun without ever feeling forced or awkward. The show does sell out, so definitely grab tickets ahead of time. It's absolutely worth it, and I'd recommend it to anyone visiting Honolulu!

Oh my goodness, buy the tickets!!! This show is amazing!!!!…read more I found it through some Google search I did when trying to find something fun for my family and I to do for my birthday. I thought it was some ad for a show in the mainland or a scam because I've never heard of it before nor have I ever seen the theatre it was in. My daughter is 7 and I thought, "She's never seen magic before. Maybe she'll like this." Totally forgot all about it then on my birthday was scrambling to figure out what to do for fun and Google slid it back in to my searches. The ticket prices aren't bad especially if you're local. They have a bundle that gets you 1 adult and 1 child ticket for $99. The tickets for the 3 of us came out to just about $200. The ticket includes validation for Valet parking and a rum punch cocktail. The drink must've been good because I turned around for a second and my husband tanked it. It's at Hilton Waikiki Beach on Kuhio across from the Alohilani Hotel (the old Pacific Beach). I'm glad I read my confirmation email well because I thought it was at Hilton Hawaiian Village. The parking for the hotel is only Valet. We went on a Monday night to the 7:30 show and Valet was gnarly, backed up into the street. Be aware of the time it can take to get your car valeted. The show is on the second floor. The line forms right above the main hotels entrance doors. Our plans got pushed back a bit so we were running late. We ended up far back in the line and sat in the 4th row. It really didn't matter though because you can see the action from everywhere. Our magician was Shoot Ogawa. I'm not gonna give away anything about his tricks because you should get that feeling in real time. He is UNREAL. UN. REAL. Even the tricks that were supposed to be "small" were mind blowing. It was awesome to unanimously have the crowd go "WHATTTTTT" and "HEYYYYY." I know I let out a couple WTF's. I know the adults in that room had to all be skeptics, so to equally be blown away feels comforting. Like ok I'm not crazy, this stuff is inexplicable!! While he does his tricks he also talks a lot about life, his journey, humanity. He talked a lot to the kids encouraging them. He talked about how negative opinions aren't yours too keep, and knowing your value is inside. IT WAS AMAZING!!! He was preaching and cracking jokes and magicianing all at the same time the ENTIRE show. They don't allow video recording, only photos which explains why I couldn't find ANYTHING worthwhile on YouTube. Honestly, after watching the show, I appreciated that. It made everything so much more entertaining. Afterwards, you can take pictures with him and they have some merchandise you can purchase. They have little magic kits available for purchase, so on the way home we were all trying to be magicians as we ran through all the tricks that absolutely BLEW OUR MINDS. Literally the most stressful part of the entire experience was the Valet parking and dealing with Waiks traffic at night. None of that though made this experience any less worth it. BUY THE TICKETS!!! You WON'T regret it!!!!

I'm being charged for a ballet class I'm not taking, and nobody is doing anything about it…read more I'm a teen who's taking Hip Hop 1&2, strictly only those classes. Recently, I've noticed that on my account activity, I've been attending a ballet class. I don't attend those classes, and I've been very careful of not entering a class that wasn't my respective class. I asked someone about this and they told me there was a girl in the ballet class that had the same name as me and they would fix it. Fine. Next day, I see it again, I'm being charged for a ballet class. I'm fuming at this point. I call, they say again, it'll be fixed. It doesn't. Nothing I do is getting this issue fixed and I'm sick of having to call everyday because they're not checking the email of who is checking in. I doubt she has the same email as me, and if I have to keep going through this then I don't think I'll be staying at the studio.

My favorite studio on island…read more - there's actual parking stalls. YES. Inner city studios are known for having zero parking, but there are actually a few stalls in their lot + street parking + parking @ a nearby shopping center (shh.) - so many different classes for the keiki AND adults. That's right. I know some of y'all secretly want to appear on world of dance and you can fulfill those dreams here. Classes change around every season for the adult classes, but hip hop 1 and street femme on Tuesday nights + hip hop 2 and intro to hip hop on Wednesday nights are here to stay! - all of the instructors are personable! New studios can be intimidating; here's how to navigate this one: 1. The building is a two-story blue building next to Still and Moving Center. Enter through the right door that has a small Honolulu Dance Studio sign on it. 2. You'll see a narrow stairwell on your left. Walk up the stairwell, put your outside shoes on the shoe rack on the top, and slip your dance shoes on (yes, you need indoor shoes specifically for dance, whether that's ballet slippers, jazz shoes, indoor hip hop shoes). 3. Walk over to the registration table on the left and fill out a clipboard to get yourself/your child registered + pay. 4. Wait until the dance instructor calls you in, put your water + belongings on the inner racks, and have FUN! Hope to see you in class!

My granddaughter is taking her first ballet classes at Page Academy…read more The facility is clean and modern. The instructors are really patient with the young children and make the classes interesting, memorable and fun. They are currently prepping the dancers for a spring program. Prices are typical for an hour long activity. We're paying $20 per session. They offer classes for all levels including adult classes. There is a nice waiting area for parents and they can sit and watch the children learn. A restroom is available as well. There is no dedicated parking lot and street parking can be a challenge to find. We parked on a side street.

I find it hilarious at this point that Page is actively updating her business page after I update…read moremy negative review. Her info now reads that they have a spring performance every year at Mamiya Theater, which is untrue. For the past 2 years, it's been held at Kaimuki High School's theater. I was told that it was previously held at the Kroc Center in Kapolei. This past year, the venue and date were changed from Hawaii Theatre to KHS. We were kicked out of the Academy in April and heard through several moms that the class performance in May (which we didn't participate in) was a total disaster. After months of preparation, the dance was changed at the last minute. The kids on stage didn't know what to do, which wasn't a great look. This was exactly my concern in my correspondence with Page and her assistants from January-April. My daughter began coming to Page Academy in January 2024 and did not know any of the basic ballet positions until after the performance in mid-May. For that reason, I did not want my daughter to perform or take lessons that were heavily geared toward practicing for the spring performance. On top of the fees per lesson (approx $20 x 14 weeks), parents need to purchase the costume ($75) and tix to show ($20 per person). Professional photos & videos are extra ($10 per photo, more for the video) and you aren't allowed to use your own camera in the theater. You do the math. Can't wait to return here soon to see what kinds of lies and excuses Page has to share on this business page. I find it hilarious at this point that she's resorted to deflecting and not addressing the issue -- that she kicked out a 5-year-old because of the contract's own unclear policies. I'm done. We are no longer clients here so have nothing else to say about our experience, very little of which was positive. I regret sending my daughter here and hope Page has learned something from this so that if you do enroll your child you all have a better time.

So glad I finally got to see 'Auana in February 2026 after they were dark when I was last in O'ahu…read morein August 2025. Just know that the theater is by far the smallest Cirque theater I've been in, and I've seen all of their shows in Las Vegas and a few of their travelling shows in San Francisco and Dallas. As far as the show... I will say that Hawai'i in general leans HARD into the "wise indigenous / magical Native" trope to the point it feels self-stereotyping. (See @Itzeaglee on Instagram where he calls out people expecting Native people to act "indigenously.") This trope is central to the show which can feel a bit silly. This Cirque production also seems to lean into the "mystical kūpuna" (which is the Hawaiian version of the "noble savage") stereotype. The show begins with a fake, clueless tourist (actor) who is put to sleep by a native musician (in traditional clothes.) The wise, mystical musician has no need for the tourist's money that he tried to hand him during the show. The tourist actor is awoken and surrounded by smoke as dancers encircle him as the female kūpuna does a Hawaiian chant. He's frightened and tries to flee as the dancers boldly, but free from emotion, spin a canoe paddle during their dance. It segues into a scene where what I assume is Maui's Manaiakalani is thrown into water and as it's pulled up, a curtain drops and shows the Polynesians boating to Hawai'i. The subsequent scenes are centered around different aspects of Hawaiian history, from pre-contact, to the touristy tiki luau influx, to modern beach & street culture. Overall, I think it's most comparable to the Cirque show Mad Apple, which has a New York City theme and plays in Las Vegas. I like the cohesive theme and the clear narrative throughout the performance. The costuming and live music make the show extra special. My favorite part was the woman who made sand painting art.
