Castlemartyr Resort - Sea Bass at the Bellflower Restaurant

Castlemartyr Resort

My family (wife and 3 children) had the pleasure of staying at the resort for 3 nights, and everything about it was top notch. It is set on gorgeous property, including rolling hills, a beautiful golf course, with pastures for horses and miles of beautiful hikes. In addition, they have sensational facilities, from outstanding food (awesome restaurant), to a gorgeous indoor pool, as well as a fully equipped gym (and spa). The staff was attentive, kind, considerate, friendly and overall outstanding. The rooms were spacious, well equipped and a great value for the money (while it is an expensive resort, there is great value for the money). They are incredibly kid friendly, and there are lots of fun things for the kids to do. In particular, we loved the Knight's Bar (fully stocked and gorgeous), the sensational menu at the restaurant, the awesome staff, indoor swimming pool with fantastic view, and the big rooms. 5-Stars!

There are some reviews that this is not a true 5-star experience, and while I understand why they clearly are also not considering what they charge for this magnificent property. My first thought upon checking in was what did we pay for this place? Then we realized, it was really not much...less than a typical night (not weekend) stay in Napa. The property is spectacular, and seemingly well kept. There is a new contemporary meets old world elegance on this property that few have done so well (Cavallo Point in Sausalito comes to mind). The rooms are situated in a modern contemporary wing, while the main manor sits proud with old world elegance. The highlight of this property without doubt is its grounds, and they are astounding, charming and romantic. I especially enjoyed the garden setting and the outdoor hiking trails. The spa and gym are fantastic as well. We also enjoyed dinner at the Belltower restaurant, and the food was prepared better than most hotel kitchens and on or above par with most michelin star restaurants. Service was a little lackluster (see below), but don't let that stop you. Our room was clean, comfortable and luxurious. Pressed white linens, fluffed pillows, a heavy comforter. Everything seemed to have had a once over, and designed to impress. Even the wifi is blisteringly fast considering the size of this property. I was especially suspect of this as we stayed in another Castle property in Tuscany and the wifi experience there was terrible. Finally, although I'm giving Castlemartyr 5 stars, I wanted to add a counterpoint to it's shine and a justification. I did not experience any issue with the staff, and service was on point - I can see how they could be perceived as rude or even slow, in reality they just seem barely understaffed. Also, when I reached for the toilet paper the roll fell down, then the rod, and finally the piece that connects to the connection bolted in the wall. It was a 'wtf' moment, but it was put back together and over-all not a big deal. Not ever bar is staffed, and there is not a team of 3 waiting on you for dinner. Castlemartyr has all the foundations of being a true 5 star resort, but to do so they would also, and justifiably so, be charging north of $500-1000 per night. At $250/300/nt or whatever we're paying this place is a STEAL, and thus 5-stars w/o question. Come stay here, and stay often. It's a bargain at this rate.

Can you imagine taking a ferry from the town of Waterford to "the island" without even getting out of your car, then drive the roads that are lined with trees while looking at all wonderful scenery & foliage only to land in front of this spectacular castle where you would be spending the night (or more if you're lucky!)? Let me just say it's pretty wild & if you can afford it, even for one night as I did, I would do it as it's a once in a lifetime thing! Now there are 2 types of accommodations at the Waterford Castle. The castle itself & the "lodge" which is not physically attached to the castle, it's just a tad bit down the road but it is still eloquent in its own right. It's additional accommodations to the castle. My review will be based on the "castle" as that is where we stayed & loved it!! First off, accommodations are not cheap, whether it be the castle or lodge. But with that said the castle is the epitome of elegance & luxury! And to me, this is a once in a lifetime experience so go big or go home! When you drive up & walk through the castle doors you feel like you've found paradise & are about to fall back into time. But when you enter your room (and each room has its own name & is unique in its own way) you know you're in Heaven. The beds are large, comfy & fluffy, when you walk in you'll notice a chocolate on each pillow, the room was huge! They had an armoire for storing your clothing, TV, windows to open, chairs to relax in & the bathroom...OMG I loved the pull chain on the toilet! Too funny! And the huge bear claw tub - to die for!! We arrived later in the evening & the dining room was just getting ready to close for new service (5 or 10 minutes left), however the person who was checking us in at the front desk said that he would tell them we were coming. This allowed us to be escorted to our room with our luggage as well allow me to park my car in the appropriate area (you can park in front of the castle to check-in, unload your luggage, etc., but have to move it for long term which is just a very short walk). And I must say that out of all the places I've had the pleasure of staying at in Ireland, Paris & Rome, this was the only place that had wash clothes in the bathroom. What can I say, small things like this make me happy. The Munster Room Restaurant was spectacular, this is what fine dining is all about! I really wanted to take pictures of the dining room & our food but my daughter was a tad bit embarrassed. Ok, she was thoroughly embarrassed & said no one else was doing it so I shouldn't (There were only 2 other tables with 2 people at each, but it was the end of the dining time so I'm sure there were probably more earlier). I did manage to get a few shots of the room we were dining in as well as 1 picture of our dessert but that's it. There was a pianist playing lovely music, after he left they scrolled through some channels of music, one of which had the Bee Gee's singing Stayin' Alive...I almost told them to go back to that station. ha ha Eating in the dining room is 60 EU each person, it's a 5 course meal & is fabulous! They do have room service but from what they told me the selection is limited. The breakfast was good & served in a different dining room from dinner. There are several things laid out for you to serve yourself (juice, coffee, fruit, muffins, etc.) & then there is a menu with main course so to speak to choose from (Irish Breakfast, Eggs Benedict, omelets, etc.). Now after being seated it took quite a while before anyone even bothered to ask us if we were ready to order (15 minutes or so) but we did notice that they were quick to attend to other guests who were seated way after us. Not sure what was up with that. When they finally came to take our order my daughter ordered Eggs Benedict & I ordered an omelet with no cheese. The food arrived in a decent amount of time but when I cut into my omelet it was oozing with cheese & didn't even have what I asked for on the inside of the omelet (completely different omelet). I had a hard time trying to flag someone down as the person that took our order was nowhere to be found. Finally got the attention of a gentleman who took the omelet back. Sadly it took so long for the correct omelet to make its appearance at our table that my daughter had already finished her meal. She loved her Eggs Benedict, my omelet tasted ok but I was just disappointed in the service from start to finish in the dining room for breakfast. This would be a 5 star review however, with the breakfast fiasco I took away 1/2 a star so I consider this a 4-1/2 review. All-in-all this was a fabulous experience & I am glad we got to spend one night here (wish it were more to so we could explore). The place was clean, organized, the staff was great & pleasant. This is definitely a must for those traveling to Waterford.
