As if walking into a spacious hotel room with large windows overlooking the River Slaney wasn't enough, a platter of strawberries and marshmallows rested on the table next to a cocktail glass of dark chocolate sauce. I immediately pencilled "Heavenly session of chocolate dipping" into my diary. It's those little extra touches that make a customer smile inside. And it's that inner smile that makes a customer remember to tell their friends... and to come back. I inspected the interesting, pretty paintings, threw myself onto the enormous bed (with silver cushions no less), and twirled into the immaculate bathroom. As I gloried in the beauty of the room, I flung open drawers and presses to find a TV on a pull-out swivel stand, a kettle with the makings of a good cuppa, and an ironing board and iron (I hastily shut that drawer!) Ferrycarrig certainly knows how to furnish a room without cluttering it. The staff were very friendly and eager to please and the food in the bar was delicious. The breakfast room was bright with high ceilings. You could choose from (or eat all of the following...) A fry-up, scones, fruit, cereal, tea and coffee. I spent a lot of time outside on the riverside dock, gazing at the soaring birds. Bliss... For those of you with little monsters, er I mean kiddies, there's a children's Crazy Club so you can get rid of the little buggers... angels... for a bit, while you relax with the (free) paper or your other half in your luxurious bedroom... As my aunt had complained about something on her last stay here, we managed to get two free nights in this four-star hotel (We just had to pay a nominal supplement so we could have separate rooms.) Not bad if you can get it!

Modern friendly location with lovely views of the fast moving estuary. The rooms are spacious, clean and very comfortable with a lovely balcony to watch the birds flying over the river. There are a good range of food options from bar food, to the full restaurant offering locally sourced sea food and meat The leisure centre is well equipped. With a good gym and decent sized swimming pool The staff in all areas of the complex are friendly and couldn't be more helpful A visit here can be very relaxing and enjoyable

The room was bright and airy, very comfortable bed and well-appointed bathroom and with a panoramic view of the car park. A pity but no biggie either. Dinner in the restaurant was pretty good too and the breakfast the following morning plentiful and really excellent. However, I have to say there is a distinct hi-de-hi quality to Kelly's which seems to be their USP. The clientele on the midweek night we were there was a mixture of retired couples and families with very young children. Afternoon tea was complimentary but we arrived to discover an entertainments manager starting a table quiz for the eager denizens giving the place a distinct air of a retirement community rather than a hotel. Returning to the same bar after dinner, a musical duet were eviscerating an old Kenny Ball standard, curiously using a guitar to imitate a saxophone. On reflection, we opted for an early night. I realise this is exactly why people return to Kelly's again and again but, frankly, it was not our cup of Darjeeling. Unlikely to return but if organised events in a resort hotel are your thing, who am I to argue?

It's a great family hotel with a kids club and plenty of entertainment to keep them busy. But there's lots for grown-ups too. They have a fabulous new spa which has every treatment you could imagine. Did I mention it's by the beach?! I love being by the sea. It's also a treat to sit out in the hot tub and watch the waves crash on the beach below. The best part though is the food. Be warned, it might be too much for some people. There's breakfast, then there's a gorgeous buffet lunch (or you can have lunch in the dining room), there's afternoon tea and then of course there's dinner. The food is fabulous, local and great Irish dishes. There's also La Marine bar and restaurant if you want something a little less formal. Kelly's has all of the attributes of an old fashioned hotel experience in a beautifully modern, cosy hotel.

The facilities are clean, up to date, everything one would need. We also ate in the dining room and in the Ballast Bar. Gordon in the Ballast Bar was wonderful as was the barman, whose name I failed to get. But a special thank you goes to Kate at the hotel Reception Desk. She went above and beyond helping us with an issue that we had (not an issue with the hotel!). Her helpfulness and friendly demeanor really made a difference. Thank you for a wonderful experience!!!

The staff are friendly and attentive, and if you are a local you are bound to meet someone in here you know. I visited the bar and grill on a Friday afternoon for lunch which was filling up quickly at 1pm. The menu is varied - Carvery options, fresh fish, burgers, wraps, sandwiches the list goes on! Each time I have eaten here I have found the food to be filing and tasty with food orders arriving in good time. They also have a restaurant - Oyster Lane restaurant which provides a luxurious dining experience. The hotel overlooks the marina and they have their own car park at the rear which is free of charge as long as you are a paying customer :-) So if you are looking for quality fresh food then look no further!

We had one castle room and one carriage room for our stay. Both rooms were quaint and well maintained. The gardens around the property are gorgeous and wonderful to explore during nice weather. The only thing to note is that in off-season the main restaurant is only open on the weekends and the tea service is not available during the week. While we enjoyed the food at Hermione's, the day we stayed there was a group event closing the main restaurant so we had to eat in the bar area. Most of the activities are off the property which wasn't very clear as we approached the date of our stay. We ended up visiting the National Stud Farm (about 30 minutes drive) and the clay pigeon shooting (about 40 minutes drive). Highly recommend both activities and really appreciate the staff helping us arrange these activities. The downstairs bar area is open late with a delicious charcuterie and board games are available to use by the fireplace which was a fun way to spend the later evening hours. Highly recommend staying at Kilkea Castle Hotel!

The property itself is stunning. Plenty to do between golf, the spa, the gym, bird flying, walking around and great food plus drinks. We made the 30 minute ride to the outlet malls and loved that also. The proper Irish breakfast to start everyday was amazing! I wish they would bring that to the states. Thanks again for the hospitality! Cheers
