Elsinore Castle was erected in 1883 by the Cincinnati Waterworks to house a valve for water to be transported to Eden Park. The company was interested in enhancing the view of the park, and this location was the former main entrance. The castle was built be renown architect Samuel Hanneford, modeled after Kronberg Castle, which was featured in a local play of Hamlet. The real Kronberg Castle can be found in Denmark. When the Cincinnati Art Museum opened in 1886, stairs were placed at the base of Elsinore Castle. The steps were too steep to ever become popular and the Elsinore Castle soon lost its appeal as an entrance to Eden Park. A mere 100 years later, it was integrated into the landscaping of Channel 9 and is seen more as a landmark of the news station than of the park. Set alongside Gilbert Avenue, the public can still stop and photograph the castle, however it was sadly never used for anything magical, like kings and armored battle. Viewing Time: 15 minutes

In Eastern PA, we have the Riegelsville Bridge which spans the Delaware River built in 1904 by the wire rope and engineering firm of John A. Roebling's Sons Co., based in Trenton, New Jersey. Pretty cool to have that connection now that I've been to Cincinnati! The riverfront on the Cincy side is set up nicely, the park areas, stadiums, view of the skyline, serpentine wall, Carol Ann's Carousel, Statue of Cincinnatus, etc. All of those areas are in close proximity to the bridge. I took my son on a drive across the bridge to Covington and the following day we walked half way across before the Eagles-Bengals game. The bridge offers perfect views of the skyline and river! We are so glad we got to see this historic engineering landmark! It is beautiful and we enjoyed the visit of the things on the property as well as the view of Cincinnati from the property. Upon posting my photos on Facebook in an album dedicated to the places I visit based on the app, I was reported to Facebook and my photos removed. The only thing I can think is they didn't like my skepticism of their claim that angels showed up at night and built the big cross. I was skeptical also of stones claiming to have come from The Good Samaritan Inn. But with further research I realized this could be true. If they had contacted me to discuss the issues rather than having facebook remove an entire post I spent half an hour working on and tagging, I'd have given them five stars. I did ask if it was "earth angels". That I would have believed. So, Five for the garden itself. One for the folks running the Facebook page. As the Roadside App says, it is worth a stop. Just post only positives or you could go to Facebook jail.

I started out near Mirror Lake, then hiked along the short, paved Hinkle Trail to get to the upper half of the park, my goal being the Eden Park Overlook. Passed the Conservatory, old abandoned (?) water towers, a beautiful Butterfly Garden, a couple of gazebos, and lots of other scenic spots. It's hilly but walkable throughout the park. I might suggest driving around to see what's what, but then ditching your car to get an up close and "personal" look at all you'd miss just driving quickly through. Be sure to make your way up to the Overlook, where you'll find a "natural" playground, picnic benches, Twin Lakes, and a GORGEOUS view of the river and distant Cincy skyline. A wonderful gem in the Cincy area!! DEFINITELY worth a visit, any time of year!!

We recently had an opportunity to eat dinner at Winterhaus on Fountain Square and it was the most delicious collaboration of chefs. The food was Asian inspired and the drink pairings were splendid. This 43-foot-tall, bronze-cast fountain was designed to look like the beautiful fountains found across Europe, made up of a nine-foot-tall woman, who is referred to as "The Lady" by locals, with human figures both big and small below and around her. Around the fountain were several different restaurants that were either on the square or bordered the square. I probably wouldn't have known what this place was if it weren't for the opening credits from "WKRP in Cincinnati," but my partner, his family, and I were glad to stop by.

There are also 2 auditoriums, which will be used for the world choir games. It has such a historical old world feel inside the place, older than the building is. For the world choir games, besides some of the newer theatre's it is great that we do have some older (although still young by most of the world standards) auditoriums to show off. If you get a chance to visit the masonic temple, try to see if you can get a tour, it is well worth the visit and an option for a special event or a work meeting, it you want something that is different and full of history.

Archived are over 350,000 Cincinnati history artifacts and over 3.2 million items total. While not open to the public, historians and researchers can make an appointment to visit the facility. The state of the art building is climate controlled and receives new materials on a regular basis. Citizens are encouraged to donate any unwanted historical items to the Geier Center. They even have a saying: "If you're going picking, pick for us!" Artifacts include items from: the settlement of Cincinnati, the Civil War, machine tool industry, 1800s Presidential campaigns, 1800s everyday household items, early medicine, brewing, railroads, early broadcasting items, historic clothing and decorative fine arts. Other collections include artifacts about science and natural history. The Geier Center staff also share interesting historical tales, such as: - Local barbers often doubled as the dentist. He not only cut hair, but pulled teeth and did minor surgeries on people. He had a lot of bloody rags after the procedures and would wrap them around poles outside his establishment. Thus originated the red and white barbershop signage. If you would like to see new exhibits at Cincinnati Museum Center featuring fresh artifacts from the Geier Center, write letters to those in charge. I've also had the pleasure of taking one of the little boat cruises in the evening and it really is gorgeous, especially when you can take in views of the city and the lights.
