Then, not even intentionally, I stumbled across Brentwood, and I've been going there ever since--two years strong. These guys are on another level. They actually care about what they're doing, and it shows. I always book with Calvin because he's an absolute perfectionist. He takes his time, makes sure every cut is on point, and never rushes through it like so many other barbers do. The guy knows exactly what he's doing, and I walk out looking on point every single time. On top of that, the whole shop has a great vibe--the staff is outgoing, friendly, and treats you like you're part of the family. There's no way I'm ever going anywhere else.

One of SGF's oldest shops, WBS is almost a cross between a barbershop opera & factory: The numerous waiting patrons have little to occupy themselves other than watch their phones or the production flow...and they do pump out the precision cuts. There are no appointments so drop in, settle down and watch the show. When you're up, you can either take the that cutter or pass the baton until your favorite comes available. Customers are honest about the waiting queue. I ended up with the lone female barber (barberess?). I climbed in the chair, told her what I wanted (Sting '82, no goo, or a Short Rocky 3 Dolph Lundgren), and she went to work. Within 15-20 minutes, I had a great cut at a great price with tip ($15) and a nice straight-razor neck shave as a bonus. Now that's what a barbershop is all about! I'm giving Wedgewood another shot to make sure it's wasn't too good to be true!

So I friended the guy and asked him how much for a kid's haircut? He messaged me back within minutes to let me know it's $12 for kids under 12. So on a nice Holy Saturday before Easter we hopped on our bikes and rode over. The building is still being rennovated pretty heavily, and the owner is currently the only barber so the wait was a little long, but he's got plans to expand and he went out of his way to make us feel at home while we chatted with the folks in the shop. My kids played with a little tic-tac-toe board for a lot longer than I thought possible, and he even gave the kids some quarters for the little candy machine when he heard me explaining to them that I didn't have any cash. The boys sat as still as 4 and 6 year old kids can and their hair looked great for Easter, much to the credit of his skills with the scissors. He even gave us some of his fresh chicken eggs! After leaving a tip through the Square app on his phone we made it out with two kids cuts under $30 and a great experience. If you live in Doling or Woodland Heights and need a haircut, beard trim, or whatever, you owe it to yourself to walk over and see what's happening. It's great!
