A (long) while ago a few mates ventured out to try Hartsyard, finally. Not my mates, but Chen's mates - I insisted on tagging along when they suggested it. I have to say I'm not particularly impressed by the result which gives me sadface because everyone said such wonderful things about it. Let's just get to it then, shall we? First dish was Scratchings (chicken skin, togarashi, lime [$14]) and that was a nice start because we were starving and still waiting for people to show up. Good deal of oil. I was most looking forward to the soft serve for dessert and was shattered when I tasted it. The soft serve was average and the cone was terrible - it tasted like a cheap, stale home brand cone from Franklins or something. McDonald's has a better tasting cone. From looking at the prices on the menu, we all expected either utterly amazing food or relatively large portion. When the dishes hit the table they were neither. I doubt I'll be back in the future unless someone desperately wants to try and an even slimmer chance of recommending this place to friends. So disappointed.

Crispy pig tails (buttermilk dressing, pickles, hot sauce) $20

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. For the first time in Australia, we have a pulled pork that's better than my own. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not bragging that much, mine's good - really good - but I use MasterFoods Smokey BBQ to finish it off, the benchmark is not that high. Overall the food was consistently impressive. We had the pig tails, pulled pork, poutine, and soft serve - which was probably too much food for just the two of us, but we managed. Everything was really good and came with its own unique twist, but was just missing something to push it to a five star for me. Value wise, this place ranks low in my books. Hartsyard serves up small-ish portions of some of the cheapest cuts of meat at a premium. But they do serve them well. Quite well. That said, I was really happy with everything I tasted and have already planned what to order next time. And maybe the time after that.

Stuffed!

It's a lovely setup. Small place that looks like it will fit about 50. We came for a meal and the service was very personable and immediate. The cocktails were lovely (tried the Garden Party and Them Apples). The waitress recommended 2 seed (entree) and one feed (main) so we could fit in dessert which was a great recommendation. We ended up having the house made crisps, which are basically skins and some crisp breads in a vege cream cheese. The skins were good but the vege cream cheese needs some tweaking as we didn't think it was a good match. Also had popcorn prawns, which is literally what it is. Served with some aioli and burnt lemon - very good and highly recommended. The main we had was the chicken, which is classic American chicken fried chicken, with sausage gravy and biscuits (like a savoury scone). Unfortunately we didn't try dessert but left absolutely stuffed. Will be back.

If I could give this restaurant a 6/5 I would. Every single item is packed with flavour with original ideas from the chef to really boost standard proteins like scallops, beef, pork etc. these pictures speak 1000 words. I will definitely go back to try more. Additionally, the desserts are so so good. Some comments quoted at the table were "best sundae of my life" it considered of donuts, banana, peanuts, pretzel ice cream, cream and a cherry on top! If recommend sharing everything so you can try more. I loved the pulled pork maple with crackling. Wasn't too sweet but just so addictive. Come here!! Make a booking!!

Gianduja

Came in for just dessert and had the gianduja and buttermilk Panna cotta. Delicious dessert with a very trendy industrial vibe.

The café occupies the corner of Garden st and Henderson Road and is industriously styled with cool marble and pink interior and a hanging garden. There's plenty of space inside and out, so I you won't be waiting long for a table. Serving Toby's estate coffee and a range of modern Australian dishes for both breakfast or lunch, as well as some sweet treats, is a popular café with the locals and visitors to the area alike. I've visited now on more than one occasion and the café is continuously striving to perfect their menu offerings. A group of us dined on this day to sample a number of the menu choices. The Grumpy's special of chili scrambled eggs were presented atop sourdough bread and a side of heirloom carrots, a heatlhy and wholesome meal. The winner of the day, and also one recommended to us was the Green Pea Smash with burrata and prosciutto. A great combination of flavours. From the sweets menu, we went for the Fig Brioche, topped with macadamia, honey, ricotta and vanilla ice cream (in place of the regular fairy floss). There were a few fruits topping it and would love to have a few more. The Grumpy's granola and pannacotta is also not only beautiful, but delicious and served with a raspberry pannacotta. Could be a sweet or breakfast ;) The venue also serves the famous cronuts (a mix of a doughnut and croissant, filled with a range of insides like cream, Nutella, caramel and topped with oreos etc. Surprise yourself. The guys at grumpy's are always friendly and hospitable. Make sure you pay them a visit.

The service is spotty at best, but not unusual for this part of Sydney where the staff are more likely to be part time students who just came off a hard night at the local clubs than full time hospitality folk. So after some confusion around table numbers and what we did or didn't order, the food eventually made an appearance. The Huevous Rancheros looked very good, and I am told was quite good. The French toast was small in serving - but very tasty. It left me room to try the PB&J off the kids menu. Very basic is appearance and taste - but still fun. The seating area is very spacious and the ambience feels very Sunday brunch. Relaxing and cool. It's a quiet part of town generally on weekends. We followed up with the "crack pie" which didn't crack at all, instead it was a gooey melted version. Still taste nice and the praline ice cream that came with it was very good. Needs some attention to detail - but I'd come back again.

Given its in the Eveleigh Carriageworks space, it wasn't particularly full which we liked as we could actually hear each other talk. A good range of wines, though none of the cocktails appealed. It has a really nice atmosphere and some good configurations for seating, plus a random pool table in front of the bar. I think we'll be back.
