So its honestly gotten better as far as delivery. We complained a lot on the customer service # they give but it seems like the phone workers arent actually here locally! When i finally emailed the paper directly thats when service improved greatly. We enjoy the paper and dont want to lose that due to delivery issues. When we grew up you knew your delivery persons name so i guess they probably cant keep workers. Hope it improves for everyone not all people are into digital reading especially seniors. Keep up the improvements! read more

i had the courant for 50 years. they are not honoring my payment that was agreed on - so cancelled them!!!!

I have had Hartford Courant home delivery for 52 years. Since our delivery person retired last year, delivery has become very unreliable. It is now Sunday morning and I have not received a paper since last Wednesday. Repeated calls to their offshore circulation support team has been a waste of time. I wish I could get this complaint viewed by their senior management. Or perhaps they don't care about us. read more

Canceled subscription 2 months before ended. Was told no refund had to wait it out. Then they charged me extra for going beyond their end date and told me there was never a cancelation. Guess that $15 charged me is really needed. read more

the courant digital and customer service is absolutely the worst.First complaint was both times I contacted customer service,I could barely understand the person at the other end, and I am sure a great deal was lost in translation.I was unable to access the digital edition for 2 months but was charged every month for it, was never given an adjustment.I cancelled my account, and then shortly afterward jumped on a deal for the next year when they tried to get me back as a customer. The price is right, but I still have the same problem accessing the digital edition, although I gain access half the time, the other half of the time I am denied access. Their customer service is a joke and so is this newspaper. If they offer you a special introductory rate, cancel after the period expires. read more

40 years ago price and delivery service we're excellent. People actually used the classifieds. Up until my last few bills the price seemed fair. The last bill equaled to about $10 per day for a full year. That's it. I may miss an occasional obituary, but the haphazard delivery... see you later. read more

we have not received our delivered paper now for three days and when I call the customer service number I get' no worries' and they will be sure to take care of it... Obviously I am worried and don't know who to call to get any results. We are seriously thinking of canceling since we are paying so much money for nothing So how can you improve? You could have a dedicated line with someone that could really help you or at least tell you what the issue is instead of being told that they are just a call center read more

Watch their billing - you pay for 6 months, but they bill again at 5 months (Plus the price increases) SHOCKER! Be sure to STOP automatic billing to a credit card - You will always be on the losing end of the deal. Our credit card was billed 5 times in 6 months. So sad what the Hartford Courant has become! Call center is operated out of the country - GOOD LUCK..... read more

On June 5th of this year, 2025, I ordered and paid by credit card 91.00 to have the Courant delivered to our home. The rep said delivery would start on Wednesday of that week. We received the paper, but now deliveries are delayed for 2 days. I called each day to complain and received all kinds of apologies. I still receive a paper every other day sometimes. How is it that the oldest publishing newspaper in the country can deliver all over the country and not deliver daily in its State? read more

On June 28 I received an email from the Courant that my monthly rate for digital access was going up, from $27.72 every 4 weeks to $40 every 4 weeks. This was an increase of 44%!!! I called them and complained. They first said was that they can raise the prices any time they want. I asked if there were other ways to access the content or lower the rate, and they lowered my rate to $14 every 4 weeks, which is actually lower than what I'm paying now. I did not even have to threaten to cancel, which was my next step. Moral of the story: If they try an absurd rate hike on you, just call them and tell them you want a lower rate. I don't understand why they insist on ruining whatever reputation they have left with big rate increases. If they're going to end up giving you some type of lower rate at the end of the conversation, they should just do it without punishing the customer by having to navigate their convoluted phone system and then waiting for you to ask, hoping that you don't. read more

This newspaper has declined greatly in journalism coverage, customer service and billing practices since the current owner, Alden Global Capital, took over in 2021. The "52-week" delivery subscription is whittled down with weekly transportation surcharges and charges for unwanted supplements they include with the paper periodically, up to $15.99 each for up to 16 times per year, which takes most of the subscription fee. These are unwanted tabs of crossword puzzles, or high school sport supplements. One can ask to not be charged, but they will start charging for supplements again without telling you. They say they notify you of any changes to the subscription terms, but never told me about the transportation surcharges until I happened to call because my paper was not delivered. There is no way on one's account to see what the end date of the subscription is or the charges that have been put on one's account. This is unethical business practice. They count on you not checking, forgetting when you started the paper. On 8/19/2025 I received a postcard letting me know I would be charged for renewal on 8/23/2025. I had paid for a yearlong subscription on December 4, 2024. I called immediately to cancel the paper and was told the current subscription delivery would end on 8/22. The next day there was no paper. I called again and was told the surcharges required the paper delivery stop on 8/19, despite what I was told the day before and on the postcard. Then on 8/20, a day after I canceled, I was charged more than $320 on my credit card, despite having cancelled the subscription the day before. I am still waiting for my refund and disputed the charge with the credit card company and filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. The new owners sold off the Courant's building, stripped down the staff and require reporters to work from home. They have done this to numerous papers focusing only on profits, rather than the value of a good newspaper informing a community. The paper that once covered every town every day, as well as national, state and international news, had a Sunday magazine called Northeast, and served the Greater Hartford area well now looks like a leaflet by comparison. Sports get the most pages, The oldest continuously published newspaper no longer serves the Greater Hartford area with comprehensive coverage, fair billing and business practices. The Dallas Morning News appears to have recently rejected the Alden group's bid to buy their paper. It is too bad that the Alden Group got their hands on our paper. So I am looking to other sources of news, perhaps CT Mirror, CT Insider or The NY Times will get my business. So sad a loss to our community. RIP Hartford Courant. read more

took over 6 months of constant calling to fix a billing error on their end. Finally submitted BBB complaint and "magically" the Courant fixed the problem. Completely unhelpful customer service that does not do what they promise. Customer advocates as useless....everything needs to go to investigation, which never happens. They even sent balance due off to collection agency...who proceeded to harrass me about bill. Could not recommend against ever dealing with them any more forcefully. Paper is garbage as well. read more

These people are getting very shady with the subscriptions. You sign up and pay for one year (in my case), I opted out of the "premium issues" that otherwise will reduced the term of your subscription (even though you agreed to give me a ONE YEAR subscription), and now they are adding a "supply chain surcharge" of 15 cents per delivery day, but instead of telling you the cost and you paying it, they reduce your subscription term AFTER they have already agreed to give you an annual (ONE YEAR - 365 DAY) subscription. We are likely going to cancel entirely because of these shady practices. Just tell us what the cost is and give me the darn paper for one year at whatever price and stop this nonsense about reducing the length of the term. WE ARE ON TO YOU. The media will be hearing about this next. How awful!!!! read more

Garbage. Papers continue to show up to my house even though they were never requested. My husband has called 5 times to get them cancelled and each time someone else gives them the run around. This company has failed miserably in their distribution efforts. The digital subscription is arriving later and later all the time. the two days of week that i get the print subscription, it seldom arrives before 9:30 AM. I plan to not renew. i am done with an organization whose customer focus is pretty much zilch: old news, sports news that is never current, customer service people who have difficulty communicating with customers and accept no responsibility, and a call number where you are on hold for usually 20 minutes at the least. and the prices keep climbing. Too bad a ZERO rating is not available! read more

On July 3 I changed my subscription from daily to twice a week and was quoted a price of $45.50 for three months. Imagine my surprise when my credit card was charged $115.70. When I spoke to customer service I was told that my new subscription would expire on 9/8 (the three month period) and the charge would still be $115.70. That amounts to $6.43 a paper!!! Never mind it wasn't the price quoted to me. The HC is ripping us off and come 9/8 I won't be subscribing to these robbers - the HC isn't worth it. Sandra M read more

We get a paper. About once every six weeks in the last six months. We qualify every sunday and we don't get a replacement paper Except once or twice. We've called the hartford current on the weekend during the week and even emailed the subscription Supervisor. We still cannot get a partial or whole paper Consistently delivered. The current used to be an efficient good paper. This is a joke read more

Where's the -1 star option? These clowns expect people to spend north of $1,000 per year for a lousy newspaper, with worse delivery, and even worse customer "service." Delivery is entirely hit or miss, and even when the paper does come, it's frequently far at the foot of the driveway, practically in the road, and wet on rainy days. At best, it's "yesterday's news tomorrow." It's time for "America's Oldest Newspaper in Continuous Publication" to be euthanized. read more

Beware.. If you cancel with the Hartford Courant, make certain to cancel your credit card that honors the withdrawals. Otherwise, it is next to impossible to stop, and you will be billed for merchandise that you don't receive. I have been billed continuously for a subscription I cancelled twice. Every time I call, I am redirected to India. The sub-contractors there cannot seem to get it straight. I receive endless junk mail campaigns from the Courant to get me to subscribe to the afternoon edition. Evidently, for that I have been getting charged $1500 per year. I should have studied my credit card statement. After ten minutes of going through phone numbers that did match my cancelled accounts, a woman from India graciously refunded the last $120 that was pretty much stolen from my credit card account. Again - beware. read more

The Arbors of Hopbrook is a facility that houses senior citizens independently. Each resident has their own apartments. The Hartford Courant has delivered here since the establishment of this wonderful building. Over the years, the employees at Arbors have accommodated the deliveries when they were late by either delivering the papers for the carrier, or calling residents down individually to receive their papers. Now the Courant will drop off the papers in the vestibule without notice and will expect the employees of the Arbors to deliver the papers. They never leave an accurate list, papers are short, certain papers like the wall street journal are missing, and the carriers usually have poor attitudes. When the papers are delivered 3rd shift, or in the am before 6am, our staff will deliver them because the carriers always claim they have other routes to do. But recently they drop off papers with no list of who receives the papers, a shortage of papers, certain papers missing, and lastly, they deliver during our busy hours and expects us to call every individual subscriber to inform them of the late delivery, and also expect us to deliver to those who aren't mobile. The carriers have no problem receiving bonuses from the residents during holiday season, but throughout the year they are not consistent. This has been an ongoing issue for two years and is now being brought to the attention of the BBB. The carrier today argued that it's my job to deliver. Once she was denied, she started using profanity and sped out of the parking lot. We can never get in touch with anyone important or in charge. We never get phone calls back, Residents never get their money back either. The residents are collectively determining whether or not to stop service all together. It's only about 30 residents, but if the Courant cares, they'll fix the situation with the carriers. read more

No paper again today. More days like this than you can imagine. The person responsible for delivering our paper has no problem leaving a self addressed envelope in hopes of receiving a holiday bonus even though one paper last week was tossed into a puddle. Yes, it was in a plastic bag and the bag was full of water. I understand that a hard copy paper is old school. It is my husband's preference. If the service is offered and we pay for it, shouldn't we get a dry paper every day? For years it was delivered to our front steps. Now, it either isn't delivered or it may be on my neighbor's lawn or in a puddle next to the road. I called twice today. Twice I was told that the carrier would be notified. Still no paper. read more

It's a scam. The online subscriptions at least - but it doesn't sound like the physical ones are much better. Caught mine early and was only charged a total of $59.88 that I shouldn't have been. After two phone calls I've been promised to get $39 of it back, but I will have to waste time checking my account every day to see if it does or if I need to call AGAIN. It's impossible to get your money back or cancel your subscription. "Subscriptions are nonrefundable" good thing I cancelled it then! Except that didn't work and it doesn't matter because I'm still getting charged. News content aside, I am not sure how this "business" is still allowed to run. If you were once a subscriber and "canceled", take a look at your bank statements and see how much money has been stolen from you. read more

I had a technical issue with the Hartford Courant digital edition functioning on my iPad Pro. It has been working fine for months and suddenly it stopped working. I called an submitted a problem report. Subsequently I received like 5 emails from customer service saying they were working on it and would respond within 72 hours. That was Feb 9 2024. Today is Feb 19 2024 and still not response. I am disappointed in the lack of followup from an organization that I used to have great respect for. Also, it seems that all customer service has been outsourced out of the US making it very difficult for older customers to understand the conversation on the telephone. read more

Called to cancel, they did not cancel. Called to cancel, they cancelled delivery but kept billing. Called to refute the bill because I had requested they cancel and was told they would investigate. After and investigation they determined since no customer service rep noted a cancellation request, I never asked for it to be cancelled and I owed them money. They aren't it to a collection agency. Called back and asked them to listen to the recording of my first call with customer service. ...they waived the amount due and gave me a confirmation code. Never use automatic billing. I called in and canceled my paper and was told that I was paid up for the next three months. So I could not immediately cancel but I was assured that my subscription would end in August. So I received a bill from their collection agency with fees that I owed supposedly for June. Being on automatic payment how can you owe? So I called and was once again assured that I would not receive anymore billing because I had cancelled. We will see how it shakes out.
