The paper's fine. I'm more partial to my home town's flyer, seeing that's the only information I can't easily find online. Still, no complaints there. Where my patronage and respect is lost is the customer service. I was contacted about an outstanding balance about half a year after subscribing initially, for a year's subscription, mind you. They claimed I had renewed my subscription a few months earlier. I calmly informed them when I had subscribed and that I was willing to submit proof if necessary, but I would not pay the balance. They told me it would be removed and didn't say another word. Over the past two months I've been calling them back regularly on this matter, and although every single person has assured me the issue has been resolved, it in fact has not been. More recently I was contacted by a collections agency regarding the balance. I was furious, to say the least, and threatened legal action. Finally after a couple more calls I got through to a supervisor, and they seemed to handle the situation, as I finally have no balance at the agency either. I've also asked them to cancel my subscription, as I'm outside of the US this year. Apparently it has been, yet the paper still arrives, so I'm reasonably skeptical. The absolute incompetence of every single customer service representative I've spoken to is astounding. Don't get mixed up with these clowns. If you really love getting the paper, just pick it up at a gas station. If you have a subscription and run into the same situation as me, I wouldn't be as patient as I was with this. the courant digital and customer service is absolutely the worst.First complaint was both times I contacted customer service,I could barely understand the person at the other end, and I am sure a great deal was lost in translation.I was unable to access the digital edition for 2 months but was charged every month for it, was never given an adjustment.I cancelled my account, and then shortly afterward jumped on a deal for the next year when they tried to get me back as a customer.The price is right, but I still have the same problem accessing the digital edition, although I gain access half the time, the other half of the time I am denied access. On June 5th of this year, 2025, I ordered and paid by credit card 91.00 to have the Courant delivered to our home. The rep said delivery would start on Wednesday of that week. We received the paper, but now deliveries are delayed for 2 days. I called each day to complain and received all kinds of apologies. I still receive a paper every other day sometimes. This newspaper has declined greatly in journalism coverage, customer service and billing practices since the current owner, Alden Global Capital, took over in 2021. The "52-week" delivery subscription is whittled down with weekly transportation surcharges and charges for unwanted supplements they include with the paper periodically, up to $15.99 each for up to 16 times per year, which takes most of the subscription fee. These are unwanted tabs of crossword puzzles, or high school sport supplements. One can ask to not be charged, but they will start charging for supplements again without telling you. They say they notify you of any changes to the subscription terms, but never told me about the transportation surcharges until I happened to call because my paper was not delivered. There is no way on one's account to see what the end date of the subscription is or the charges that have been put on one's account. This is unethical business practice. They count on you not checking, forgetting when you started the paper. On 8/19/2025 I received a postcard letting me know I would be charged for renewal on 8/23/2025. I had paid for a yearlong subscription on December 4, 2024. I called immediately to cancel the paper and was told the current subscription delivery would end on 8/22. The next day there was no paper. I called again and was told the surcharges required the paper delivery stop on 8/19, despite what I was told the day before and on the postcard. Then on 8/20, a day after I canceled, I was charged more than $320 on my credit card, despite having cancelled the subscription the day before. I am still waiting for my refund and disputed the charge with the credit card company and filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. The new owners sold off the Courant's building, stripped down the staff and require reporters to work from home. They have done this to numerous papers focusing only on profits, rather than the value of a good newspaper informing a community. The paper that once covered every town every day, as well as national, state and international news, had a Sunday magazine called Northeast, and served the Greater Hartford area well now looks like a leaflet by comparison. Sports get the most pages, The oldest continuously published newspaper no longer serves the Greater Hartford area with comprehensive coverage, fair billing and business practices. The Dallas Morning News appears to have recently rejected the Alden group's bid to buy their paper. It is too bad that the Alden Group got their hands on our paper. So I am looking to other sources of news, perhaps CT Mirror, CT Insider or The NY Times will get my business. So sad a loss to our community. RIP Hartford Courant. read more

On June 28 I received an email from the Courant that my monthly rate for digital access was going up, from $27.72 every 4 weeks to $40 every 4 weeks. This was an increase of 44%!!! I called them and complained. They first said was that they can raise the prices any time they want. I asked if there were other ways to access the content or lower the rate, and they lowered my rate to $14 every 4 weeks, which is actually lower than what I'm paying now. I did not even have to threaten to cancel, which was my next step. Moral of the story: If they try an absurd rate hike on you, just call them and tell them you want a lower rate. I don't understand why they insist on ruining whatever reputation they have left with big rate increases. If they're going to end up giving you some type of lower rate at the end of the conversation, they should just do it without punishing the customer by having to navigate their convoluted phone system and then waiting for you to ask, hoping that you don't. read more

Completely unhelpful customer service that does not do what they promise. Customer advocates as useless....everything needs to go to investigation, which never happens. They even sent balance due off to collection agency...who proceeded to harrass me about bill. Could not recommend against ever dealing with them any more forcefully. These people are getting very shady with the subscriptions. You sign up and pay for one year (in my case), I opted out of the "premium issues" that otherwise will reduced the term of your subscription (even though you agreed to give me a ONE YEAR subscription), and now they are adding a "supply chain surcharge" of 15 cents per delivery day, but instead of telling you the cost and you paying it, they reduce your subscription term AFTER they have already agreed to give you an annual (ONE YEAR - 365 DAY) subscription. We are likely going to cancel entirely because of these shady practices. Just tell us what the cost is and give me the darn paper for one year at whatever price and stop this nonsense about reducing the length of the term. WE ARE ON TO YOU. On July 3 I changed my subscription from daily to twice a week and was quoted a price of $45.50 for three months. Imagine my surprise when my credit card was charged $115.70. When I spoke to customer service I was told that my new subscription would expire on 9/8 (the three month period) and the charge would still be $115.70. That amounts to $6.43 a paper!!! The person responsible for delivering our paper has no problem leaving a self addressed envelope in hopes of receiving a holiday bonus even though one paper last week was tossed into a puddle. Yes, it was in a plastic bag and the bag was full of water. I understand that a hard copy paper is old school. It is my husband's preference. If the service is offered and we pay for it, shouldn't we get a dry paper every day? For years it was delivered to our front steps. The digital subscription is arriving later and later all the time. the two days of week that i get the print subscription, it seldom arrives before 9:30 AM. Called to cancel, they did not cancel. Called to cancel, they cancelled delivery but kept billing. Called to refute the bill because I had requested they cancel and was told they would investigate. After and investigation they determined since no customer service rep noted a cancellation request, I never asked for it to be cancelled and I owed them money. They aren't it to a collection agency. Called back and asked them to listen to the recording of my first call with customer service. ...they waived the amount due and gave me a confirmation code. I received a second notice from the collection agency and called them to provide the confirmation number so they could call the Hartford Courant to validate the waiving of the invoice. Beware.. If you cancel with the Hartford Courant, make certain to cancel your credit card that honors the withdrawals. Otherwise, it is next to impossible to stop, and you will be billed for merchandise that you don't receive. I have been billed continuously for a subscription I cancelled twice. Every time I call, I am redirected to India. The sub-contractors there cannot seem to get it straight. I receive endless junk mail campaigns from the Courant to get me to subscribe to the afternoon edition. Evidently, for that I have been getting charged $1500 per year. I should have studied my credit card statement. After ten minutes of going through phone numbers that did match my cancelled accounts, a woman from India graciously refunded the last $120 that was pretty much stolen from my credit card account. The Arbors of Hopbrook is a facility that houses senior citizens independently. Each resident has their own apartments. The Hartford Courant has delivered here since the establishment of this wonderful building. Over the years, the employees at Arbors have accommodated the deliveries when they were late by either delivering the papers for the carrier, or calling residents down individually to receive their papers. Now the Courant will drop off the papers in the vestibule without notice and will expect the employees of the Arbors to deliver the papers. They never leave an accurate list, papers are short, certain papers like the wall street journal are missing, and the carriers usually have poor attitudes. When the papers are delivered 3rd shift, or in the am before 6am, our staff will deliver them because the carriers always claim they have other routes to do. But recently they drop off papers with no list of who receives the papers, a shortage of papers, certain papers missing, and lastly, they deliver during our busy hours and expects us to call every individual subscriber to inform them of the late delivery, and also expect us to deliver to those who aren't mobile. The carriers have no problem receiving bonuses from the residents during holiday season, but throughout the year they are not consistent. This has been an ongoing issue for two years and is now being brought to the attention of the BBB. The carrier today argued that it's my job to deliver. Once she was denied, she started using profanity and sped out of the parking lot. We can never get in touch with anyone important or in charge. We never get phone calls back, Residents never get their money back either. The residents are collectively determining whether or not to stop service all together. It's only about 30 residents, but if the Courant cares, they'll fix the situation with the carriers. read more

It's a scam. The online subscriptions at least - but it doesn't sound like the physical ones are much better. Caught mine early and was only charged a total of $59.88 that I shouldn't have been. After two phone calls I've been promised to get $39 of it back, but I will have to waste time checking my account every day to see if it does or if I need to call AGAIN. It's impossible to get your money back or cancel your subscription. "Subscriptions are nonrefundable" good thing I cancelled it then! Except that didn't work and it doesn't matter because I'm still getting charged. News content aside, I am not sure how this "business" is still allowed to run. If you were once a subscriber and "canceled", take a look at your bank statements and see how much money has been stolen from you. read more

I had a technical issue with the Hartford Courant digital edition functioning on my iPad Pro. It has been working fine for months and suddenly it stopped working. I called an submitted a problem report. Subsequently I received like 5 emails from customer service saying they were working on it and would respond within 72 hours. That was Feb 9 2024. Today is Feb 19 2024 and still not response. I am disappointed in the lack of followup from an organization that I used to have great respect for. Also, it seems that all customer service has been outsourced out of the US making it very difficult for older customers to understand the conversation on the telephone. read more

I tried to start an online subscription but was unable to access. I called support and was told that it takes 48 HOURS to start the subscription. I asked to cancel and to get a refund and was told that I could not cancel because the subscription had not started. I will try again, but am finding that not having access to the paper is leaving me better informed than I would be if I was able to read it. Never use automatic billing. I called in and canceled my paper and was told that I was paid up for the next three months. So I could not immediately cancel but I was assured that my subscription would end in August. So I received a bill from their collection agency with fees that I owed supposedly for June. I cancelled my subscription last year, after the Courant told me my subscription was being renewed for thirteen weeks -- but billed me the same amount for only seven weeks. This September, I was talked into a new subscription at a very favorable rate (with a grocery gift card thrown in). But delivery started almost a week later than promised, delivery was spotty, and when renewal time came around, I wasn't credited for either the late start to the subscription or the many missed papers that were not redelivered. I spent more time than was reasonable on the phone with customer "service" last week, and they agreed to correct the billing and not to bill my credit card until I received all the papers I'd already paid for, which would roll the payment into the January cycle. They lied. They billed me today. When I contacted billing, they hung up on me. Given that my current promotional rate is less than the newsstand price of one paper per week, I'm not quite ready to cancel, but the service is appalling and at least half the content seems to be days-old reprints from NYC papers, mostly the Times, which I subscribe to. Anybody paying close to the standard price for this fish wrap is foolish. read more

I have contacted the company numerous times and received several assurances that they would stop delivery yet every Sunday there it is. If I could give a zero star review I would. I have canceled my subscription delivery service several times. Once because the courier said a tip would ensure proper service. I tried once again paying in full for a 1 yr subscription for the Thurs and Sun paper. The current courier delivers only when she feels like it and I find myself calling for a replacement paper almost every single week. And not to my surprise, the replacement paper doesn't arrive either. And they wonder why paper delivery subscriptions are becoming non extinct. The home delivery service is absolutely disgusting. What's even worse is the customer service when you try to call and get your home delivery service fixed. The same person answers the phone every single day and nothing ever gets done about the service. If I'm lucky the paper is delivered twice a week and I've paid $500 for the last 6 months to have it delivered every single day. There has been no credit given to my account. On the days that it is delivered it's usually barely in my driveway or actually in the road. I am 92 years old and cannot risk getting my paper from the middle of the road. read more
