There is a great pub quiz held here weekly which is very popular so get there early to get a seat. I love the beer garden here which I didnt know existed until this year! To give me credit you have to go through the door to the mens toilets to get to it (dont worry there is a separate door then leading to the loo!) but the garden is quite enclosed and has plenty of shade for people like me who are so pale they are almost see through! Its also handy if it rains and you cant get a table back inside. The Salmon also has a small function suite upstairs which is good for more low key events like anniversary parties. There is also a lovely lunch menu here which I would definately recommend. HOWEVER I cant give the Salmon anymore than a 3star because although there is nothing wrong with the place, there isnt much sparkle to it either. Definately worth a visit though.

The bar staff are now friendly apart from a little monkey on a Saturday, who needs to understand that if the punters want to watch the footie match on a Saturday lunchtime, then he should not put his rugby on, as he does not like footie. The toilets still need a overhaul and are still small and dingy. However it is now clean is far better than my last review. My old review is now below this: (now up from 1 star to 3) What can I say about this pub. Don't go there. I went there once, must have been on giro day. The place stunk and the windows, mirrors and furniture had not been cleaned for months. The toilets are truly awful. I brought a pint and the smell coming from behind the bar was actually turning my stomach. I left the bar without finishing my pint and have never been back. It does seem like the unemployed alchoholics use this pub.

This pub is decorated in a modern style and is a refreshing change from the many old style bars in the town. The clientele is varied; during the day you will find older couples and families with children in for meals. At night and during weekends there are more young people and party goers. However these groups of people all mix well and there is a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The food menu is good and the fajitas and enchiladas are especially good. There is also an extensive pizza menu and a dessert cabinet where you can pick from lots of fresh cakes. Drinks prices are about average for Galashiels but there is a cocktail menu which is apparently good but I have not tried. A nice bar with a modern feel and in a good location for the nightclubs.

There is a pool table through the back and karaoke regularly. This pub can be very quiet throughout the week but is packed to the brim at weekends. Going to the toilet if you are female feels a bit odd at first as the ladies loos are upstairs entered by a staircase right across the room (you have to squeeze by the karaoke machine on some nights!). This pub is pretty small and the decor is a bit shabby but the drinks arent expensive and you can see if the clubs are open from the window. The bar has gone through several refurbishments in the last few years which they obviously didnt like and has now settled for couches at the front with some basic tables and chairs, while to the back you will find booth seats and high tables. This is fine if you are in for a drink, but it can be quite awkward eating dinner at the high tables. You will also find that people queue at the bar here which is a phenomenon I have never seen anywhere else in the world! Hunters Hall is a good place for a quick or cheap meal and the perfect start to a night out in Galashiels. There is a huge mix of different people in here and this is one of the few Wetherspoons which plays music. You can also catch big matches here as well.

There's a large outdoor area at the back that was being refurbished for our visit, but it looks pretty smart and will no doubt make an excellent area to enjoy a pint in the sun in Melrose.
