Seton Hall doesn't have a terribly rich basketball history, but it's not a no-name program either…read more The Pirates have made the NCAA tournament 13 times since 1988 which, relatively speaking, is a pretty good clip. Seton Hall saw its greatest success under head coach PJ Carlesimo (1982-1994). Carlesimo is best known for his time as an NBA head coach, which immediately followed his success as a college coach at Seton Hall. He was an assistant coach on Gregg Popovich's staff when the San Antonio Spurs won the NBA championships in 2003, 2005, and 2007. In his last seven seasons in Newark, Carlesimo led Seton Hall to six NCAA tournament appearances. That stretch was highlighted by the 1988-89 team which lost in the national championship game to Michigan by one point in overtime, 80-79. The stars on that Seton Hall team were John Morton and Andrew Gaze. Gaze would later win an NBA championship playing for Popovich and Spurs in 1999. The star on that Michigan team was Glen Rice. Seton Hall defeated Duke in the Final Four, 95-78. That Duke team was coached by Mike Krzyzewski and led in scoring and rebounding by Danny Ferry. Carlesimo won back-to-back Big East Coach of the Year awards in 1988 and 1989. Before PJ Carlesimo, Seton Hall was coached by Bill Raftery. These days, most college basketball fans know Raftery for his work as a broadcast analyst, particularly during CBS Sports' coverage of March Madness. Raftery was at Seton Hall from 1970 to 1980. It was only in his final two seasons that the Pirates were members of the Big East. Prior to that, they were in the short-lived New Jersey-New York 7 Conference or independent. Raftery didn't have much success at Seton Hall, compiling an overall record of 154-141 (.522) and 5-15 (.250) in the Big East. Current coach Kevin Willard, who was hired away from Iona in 2010, has had decent success at Seton Hall. He led the program to four-straight NCAA tournament appearances from 2016 to 2019. It would have been five-straight if it wasn't for the 2020 tournament cancellation. Willard's 2016 team won the Big East Tournament and he was named Big East co-Coach of the Year along with Villanova's Jay Wright (co-Coach of the Year has only happened twice so far in the conference). Seton Hall plays its home games in the Prudential Center in downtown Newark which it shares with the NHL's New Jersey Devils. They've played in "The Rock" since its opening in 2007.
