I have children attending Western Carolina University, and in the past 2 months, there have been 3 trips to the Emergency Room at Harris Regional. Each time, as a Mama, I have been so impressed the staff and the care my kids have received. The staff is kind, thorough, communicative and have the sweetest bedside manner. Major shoutout to RN Justin! read more

Do yourself and your health a favor, avoid going to this hospital. You'll probably be sent by ambulance to a nearby hospital with more options to help you anyway. Harris Regional lacks qualified medical staff due its remote Appalachian location. It will take years for modernization to catch up in these parts. The public assistance programs are not helping people in these parts improve their lives with individual independence. In fact public assistance programs are causing the opposite, dependency and stagnation. Example; when a farmer continues to feed its livestock with by filling the feeding troth after winter has passed and spring has arrived, the livestock will not move out to Greener pastures on their own. The livestock remains at the troth awaiting for it to be refilled. The livestock got use to the dependency and prefers the handout vs. self sufficient independence. read more

I would avoid going to Harris Hospital for labor and delivery at all costs. Mission Hospital is better in every way! The staff, the food, the common sense levels, etc. They took my perfectly healthy baby boy poked him with needles, hooked him up to machines, told us we had to transfer to mission to hook him up to an EEG machine and got us stuck in a 3 day NICU protocol for no good reason. I had a Frank Breech Homebirth and our son was 8lbs 6 oz. We are exhausted and impatiently waiting to go home. Every person I encountered judged me for birthing my son in the safety of my home. Sometimes tests and poking and prodding is justified and warranted and sometimes doctors make orders that cause more harm than good. read more

I had a heart scan done at Harris, Sylva, NC, and the experience has been nothing short of frustrating and unacceptable. Despite being told that the results would be sent to my cardiologist, they never were. Not only that, but I was also unable to access my own results online. I've called multiple times trying to get answers, no return calls and when they are returned, I keep getting the runaround with no clear resolution. When it comes to heart health, time is critical, and this kind of negligence is completely unacceptable. Patients deserve transparency and timely communication regarding their own health. If you need a heart scan or any important test done, I strongly suggest going elsewhere--somewhere that actually values patient care and follows through with their responsibilities. read more

I hated to even give one star . In October of 2025 I submitted orders for an MRI of my foot. I got a call the night before the MRI and had to pay $761 dollars before the MRI. The next day I show up and am told by a rude person they would not be doing the MRI. I found out Harris had not bothered to get a pre auth. That is why they would not do the scan. Granted we drove over an hour to get there. This is February 16th 2026 and I have still not received my $761 dollars back. Fortunately, I obtained another order and took it to Angel Medical Center in Franklin. They were amazing! I did have to pay almost $700 AGAIN out of my pocket. I received a credit from them very quickly after the Insurance came through. NEVER AGAIN Harris, Never!! read more

Went in for chest pain and passing out and all I was told was its just anxiety. Mind you I about passed out being walked back there. Ive been dealing with this for 3 days. Was told my allergy to contrast was too much of a risk despite having perviously 2 SURGERIES with it and being fine with pre meds and that I most likely dont have a clot even though they did no scans or even check my pelvis which I told them I have a history of clots in my pelvis that causes THESE SAME symptoms. Basically felt like I was wrote off because of my age. read more

My wife sustained a fractured patella (kneecap) and was taken to Harris ER. She was seen immediately and treated for pain and stabilized. Within 20 minutes, xrays had been taken and reviewed by orthopedic surgery who advised that the repair could be done at Harris. On Saturday AM of easter weekend, she was cared for expertly by the OR team and nurses, surgery, and anesthesia with an excellent procedure. The post op care was excellent with attention to all aspects of care including pain, muscle spasm, physical therapy and general medical care. Surgery and internal medicine did very close follow-up over that weekend and throughout. The nursing staff was excellent, friendly, and very attentive, always quickly answering any calls and taking care of any problems. My wife is vegan and dietary went out of their way to prepare good plant based meals which my wife loved. Physical therapy saw her very expertly including weekends and worked closely with the rest of the team. The discharge planning was well orchestrated and all problems were anticipated and resolved in an expert manner. Dan Lorch MD read more

ER visit on 1/9/2026 after a fall when a stool went out from under me. Thought I broke ribs and arm. Dr. McAbee was the doctor on duty. Scheduled a CAT and x-rays. Diagnosed me with a shoulder strain and abdominal wall contusion. Had to go back the next morning because of pain. I couldn't move my arm and couldn't get up from bed due to the abdominal contusion. He never mentioned that. Not one to do about the injuries was on the release papers. Just said to see an orthopedic. Didn't check me out to see why I was in so much pain the following morning. Didn't even ask how I was. Stood foot feet away and asked what kind of pain meds I wanted. Sent in prescription. I knew it was much more than a shoulder strain. Went to my primary and had him request an MRI. The MRI showed a comminuted fracture (shatter) to the humeral head, complex tear to labrum, minor tear. With the results of the CAT he diagnosed an abdominal wall contusion. The CAT showed an incidental finding that he failed to mention. Incidental findings are supposed to be reported to the patient. Thank goodness my primary doctor actually read the entire CAT report when I went to him. Due to the incidental finding that Dr Mcabee failed to mention, I will be having surgery to remove my ovaries and who knows what will follow. Avoid this hospital. I went to the ER several years ago for a dog bite. I had to go back the following day because the ER doctor that day did not clean and stitch properly. Had to have the issue readdressed. read more

Honestly death would be better than dealing with anyone in this hospital. Regardless of what you do, if you call, chat, email, or go in person, they are the rudest nastiest most dismissive staff i have ever had the displeasure of meeting. All of their customer support is outsourced so most of the time they have no idea what you're talking about. And the cherry on top, I'm currently trying to fight a nearly $2000 charge for a covid test. Go ANYWHERE else read more

The slowest ER that I have ever been in. A family just left after waiting 3 hours with a baby who had a visible fever. The guy behind the window was incredibly rude and dismissive to everyone. I was able to drive here from SC to meet my daughter and we still waited over an hour on top of my 2 hour drive time to be seen. This is the worst hospital experience ever. I have had a very similar experience with the billing department. I had to make multiple calls and waited months to get an itemized billing statement for insurance. I also need to pay via HSA credit card, but the billing system is so fundamentally broken, the hospital cannot accept credit card payments and the online billing system has been down for months. However, the customer service representative stated that the attempted payment would be noted and the hospital would contact me once the billing system was fixed. BUT...that was a lie. My account was referred to two collection agencies. One agency for the hospital's bill, the second for the administering doctor's bill...which we never received a single time and was not reflected on the itemized bill. Today I filed a complaint with the North Carolina Attorney General's office. I recommend all those who have similar billing issues do the same as this issue is unacceptable. https://ncdoj.gov/file-a-complaint/consumer-complaint/ The hospital failed to reply to the attorney general's request for information. My only option now is to go to small claims court. And...eight months later, the hospital billing website is still down. Avoid this place and drive to a different hospital if you can. read more

The rude staff the ridiculously over priced in a word bad the only reason they got a 1 because I couldn't put a zero

Worst Hospital EVER!!!! I presented with chest pains, struggling to breathe and feeling as though I was going to pass out. The front desk staff seemed totally unconcerned and it took almost 20 minutes to get back to a bed in the ER. THEN... I was only seen by a CNA and very incompetent nursing "student" who blew out veins on both my arms trying to draw blood. When I did finally see a physician, he acted uninterested and as though I was boring him. Same for the PA that was with him. I will die before going to Harris Regional in Sylva, NC again! Worst. Hospital. Ever!!! If I could give it less than 1 star I would! read more

I can't report in the quality of care received, since I never received any care. I waited over 2 hours most of the time as the only person in the waiting area. To a referral to the PT place conveniently located at the hospital. What a HUGE mistake! They were ridiculously overcharging me for services and my co-pay was around $181 per visit. I got a new referral to a provider in SC where my PT is actually better and the co-pay is $17. Criminals. read more

My son had stitches put in the inner palm of his hand. Within two days the outer stitches popped out. I called and told them I need them to fix the stitches and they told me that it would be a whole new medical issue and I'd have to pay for it again!!! I let them know I had never heard of someone not fixing something they did incorrectly. The man was rude and told me it was Labor Day so no one is really working so if he came in he would probably wait forever anyways. My son went to the infirmary at WCU and begged them to do the stitches since the inner ones were still in tact. They did them with no charge and they didn't pop out. So, if you have a student in an emergency, I'd definitely try to get in the infirmary or drive past Sylva and to the next hospital. read more

Took my GF to Harris for numbness in her legs. The male nurse was extremely rude to me and GF. They sent her home with no diagnosis. It got worse took her back later tonight. She than rudely said, I said I'll try and find someone. So I took her to another hospital. Much better service in Haywood. read more

My husband had a similar experience to Arlene B. I was very disappointed in the Emergency room protocol considering this could have been a life or death situation. The physicians, technicians, & nurses were all very personable however, procedure was very lacking. this hospital left my father in law lying in bodily fluids for 15 hours while his body was turning from septic into septic shock. they sought no aggressive treatment! he had a heart rate of 136 and blood pressure of 96/54 and 25 breaths per minute. they silenced his alarm multiple times never checked his stats in the rooms, they didn't even do their rounds. if you value your loved one get them to a better hospital. this didn't meet the standard level of care by any means. Having read the other reviews, I am sorry they had a bad experience. I have found Harris Regional to be professional, efficient and knowledable of the ailments of the human body. My only complaint is that foul smell of the coffee shop in the lobby area and watching an older barista sit and read her book playing with her pony-tail. When a customer approaches she does wait on them promptly but does not wash her hands from having her hands all over her hair in the slow periods. That is sick and disgusting. I am not a fan of coffee, but I am forced to sit and endure this odor. If I want a cigarette, I have to walk all the way up to the highway because they consider it unhealthy and foul smelling. Had imaging done on a Friday. 3/6/21 & Monday, 3/8 and was suprisesd by how dirty the medical center was. Looked like the entrance (mats, doors, etc) had not been cleaned from Friday to Monday. Dirt, leaves, debris outside at entrance & inside, mats sideways. Had to use bathroom on Monday and was out of toilet paper in 2 roll dispenser, pee on floor, mirror full of stains. Used bathroom at imaging room had pee on toilet & floor, mirror full of stains. Yuck! This is my local hospital and appearance & cleanliness has definitely gotten much worse since Duke Lifepoint took over. We're in a pandemic & the medical center was nasty. So disappointing. Can say that staff working in area were professional & courteous. read more

My opinion of Harris Regional Hospital in Sylva, NC was positive until a recent Friday afternoon visit to their emergency facility. I had a urinary blockage and was unable to urinate. Fortunately I am in their system and some of my other doctors are associated with Harris Regional Hospital. I checked in with the receptionist and after giving her my date of birth and name she located my records. After a short verbal exchange she said to have a seat and someone would be with me. The receptionist knew I was in horrific pain and after about an hour she said that she had informed a nurse that I was in terrible pain. Inform a nurse................ Please inform a triage person. After about two hours I figured the receptionist was the triage person. I was in total misery and did not speak to anyone but the receptionist for over four hours before I was called in. I never saw anyone that looked as if they were uncomfortable but were being called in before me. I do not know if the rule is first come first served which very well may be but I felt that absolutely no one cared about how miserable I was. I considered laying on the floor to get some attention. It would have been nice if a triage person, a doctor, or someone in authority had come out and said we feel for you and this is the situation. For over four hours in total agony I never heard from anyone other than the receptionist I. will never forget what I was allowed to go through without someone at least saying Hello. read more

Hey, I am not perfect. Sometimes I review a joint and I later find out after another visit that it actually is terrific or horrific. I then update my reviews to reflect later-obtained knowledge. So, I try my best to be fair. I sometimes wonder if ED reviews are truly fair. People do not enjoy waiting with panic, and when they are diagnosed in the ED with a non-panicky malady, those same people take it out on the ED via reviews, violence, or sometimes both. We went here per a nurses's advice several years ago. Our more local hospital was having some sort of breakdown, if that is possible, and I guess the nurse was trying to save us a hassle (still not sure of the whole story there, but it was the one in Clyde which I had some complaints about- see my review on that place). Anyway, we had fine service at Harris. The doctor was knowledgable and had a nice bedside manner. He gave us advice to avoid another episode such as the one we were there for. Hey, like I said, a nurse told us to go here. I do not want to clog up an ED with minor stuff. We probably lucked out with a slow night, so we did not have to wait for long. The waiting room was small, but a small waiting room does not reflect your upcoming medical service. The small waiting room for kids at Mission is horrific with kids who belong at "Chuck E. Cheese's". You get through somehow. You want to scream, but you get through. I still do not understand why some people do not understand that the person with the Komodo dragon bite gets seen before the person with the hacking cough who just got back into the waiting room from a cigarette break. I have been on both ends of the illness/injury/pain spectrum, and it is a learning experience. My son was seen in the ER for a broken thumb on 12/19/2019. I paid the bills that I received. In October of 2021 (almost 2 years later), I received a bill from EMBCC for 764.64. I talked to the billing department and they could not help me. They said this was a bill from the doctor (that was in the room less than 5 minutes). I called the administrative offices and left messages 4 different times and no one called me back. Then, I sent an email asking for the contact information of the CEO. I received an email soon after that apologizing for the issues and telling me they would help resolve the issue. They asked for my phone number and no one called. I replied back to the email 3 times and now I get no response. (I have all the emails and correspondence saved). Finally, I called the EMBCC office again and a lady answered. She told me she could take 60% off my bill which brought it down to a little over 305.00. I paid that amount just to be done with this situation. In the next three days, I received an email saying I owed 305.00. There is no communication with this organization and the employees couldn't care any less about the patients or the bills that they are receiving. I am extremely disappointed with this hospital. I can only imagine how you overcharge the elderly and others that will not question the billing. read more

Horrible experience ever!! Went late Friday for my ankle swole and red, had a great nurse, Diane I believe, and the doctor that night was quiet spoken and to the point but did not come across wrong in any way, prescribed me antibiotics and was told if after two or three days the area of redness and/or swelling got noticeably worse to come back, and my discharge papers had on them the area of redness should not increase in size AT ALL once the antibiotics where started. So late Sunday night my whole foot and ankle was swole and the redness was all over one side of my foot, so my wife and I decide to go back. The same polite helpful nurse was there but the doctor "David Glenn" that came in with an attitude right away, started off by saying he didn't have a magic wand to make it disappear and he didn't care what the other doctor said and rambled off with some other rude disrespectful BS and left the room, the nurse had to come back in and apologize for the DR's rudeness,,I will never let that A hole in the same room as me again,I do t care if my leg is falling off,if he is the DR in the ER at the time, I'll go elsewhere. read more

We went to the ER with my roommate and waited for over 3 hours late at night, when there weren't a whole lot of people there.
