Harriet was the first therapist I tried to work with, unfortunately my experience was awful and put me off from therapy for a long time. I've since found an excellent counselor that validated how harmful and unprofessional the treatment was, and I've improved enormously under their care. I add this review to warn others: although she may fit for some people, Harriet is not trauma-informed and may exacerbate damage to trauma victims.
In my first session I confided I was sexually, physically, and verbally abused throughout my childhood and she appeared to be taking notes. It was very hard to speak these things to a stranger but I trusted she'd respond professionally.
The very next session I was shocked she casually began with, "so you're a student, what are you here to talk about - stressed about finals?" I responded, "No, as I told you suffer from symptoms stemming from severe abuse I experienced as a child". It was extremely invalidating and re-traumatizing to hear her flippant, incorrect assumption.
The next session she started out calling me by someone else's name and again I had to remind her who I am. After I tearfully told my story, her main suggestion was to wrap my arms around myself and give myself a hug: useless advice for someone with severe PTSD, and again felt minimizing, humiliating, and reckless.
She bragged about her artwork, her new kitten, and her book club - all personal details I did not ask about that were highly unprofessional to foist on me in a session I paid for. I left feeling unseen, unheard, and doubtful if therapy was even a valid discipline or just a money-making scam.
I'm so glad I trusted my instincts and stopped seeing Harriet. Unfortunately due to my at-the-time untreated PTSD, I left thinking *I* was the problem, and referred her to a friend interested in trying EMDR - they also said they stopped after the experience was unhelpful.
Sadly due to the distrust Harriet fostered, I continued to suffer on my own for longer than necessary before I had to courage to again seek help, and I'm so grateful I finally did get appropriate treatment from an actual trauma-informed practitioner. read more
