Welcome to the 40-watt hotel. Where you can check out anytime you like, but you can't find the door…read moreto ever leave. So last weekend I stayed in Wortley Hall hotel the night before a wedding. Unfortunately though the group were in great spirits there were a large number of things that just made this place unbearable. Firstly the decor: The hotel section especially is in dire need of a full redecoration. Peeling wallpaper, smelly communal spaces and tatty carpets were found throughout. In fact the only place which seemed to have been looked after was our room, however despite the competently hung wallpaper there were still a few crucially lacking features, most importantly a safe (which we were told there would be for the wedding rings, meaning keeping them in someone else's room overnight). The bathroom was a bizarre mess, simultaneously clean and dirty. The cheap lino stuck to our feet getting out of the laughably small showers with it's semi-functional door. It is only fair to say that the house-keeping had done a good job and everything was as immaculate as they could make it, so it's not laziness, just dilapidation and incompetence. Secondly the house-staff: While one of the bar staff and the breakfast staff were very nice and pleasant they struggle to make up for the remaining staff. Upon arrival we were just stared at blankly during check-in (not even a hello), during our evening in the bar the staff were slow and rude, one girl especially had a habit of announcing the prices while thrusting her hand over the bar and not making eye contact. "Five Ninety!" *thrust and look away bored*. Thirdly the smell: I can't comprehend exactly what is going on here but throughout the night we encountered a large variety of very unwelcome smells in the hotel. From a faint whiff of bowel movement in the corridors, to a mixture of urine and bleach in the bar, to a rather unfortunate vomit odour in one of the breakfast rooms. I can't tell if this is a product of recent nights of the long encrusted truth of what happens at your average Wortley Hall bash, but it was unpleasant to say the least. Lastly, the fixtures and fittings: This all culminates in the most bizarre feedback I could ever give to a hotel. The overwhelming impression that the entire building was appointed for the dwarves from Lord of the Rings. "What kind of a comment is that!?" I hear you ask. Well what else am I to think when all the mirrors are at a height of 4'6" and all the light bulbs are so dim I think they actually produced darkness? This decision to make all the rooms the Gimli suite may we be deliberate ("It was deliberate!") but that doesn't make it any less a bad idea. Also, I though I did know Dwarves were natural sprinters, I didn't know that they didn't like condiments with their breakfasts. Not a jot of brown sauce, a dollop of ketchup, or heaven forbid a little piccalilli was on offer. Better get some beanjuice while you're up! The most saving of graces here are the grounds. Lovely, well kept and well described. I would only add this, go see them before someone sets up a bouncy castle or a sumo ring in them, which appears to be a daily occurrence around 11:30.

I recently went to a 60th here for my Grandad. We went in during the day to set up our decorations…read morelike balloons and things and everyone was fairly helpful. They weren't exactly bending over backwards to help us but they were there and they let us move chairs around and things like that. My grandmother had paid the low sum to hire out the room (to the left as you walk in) plus a buffet spread and she had booked her own DJ. The party space had tables and chairs enough for 60-70 people, more than we actually needed - it was an intimate affair - and a stage for the DJ to play from plus a "dance floor" with the private bar to the right. There were also private toilets for our party, The main social club is to the right and its a fairly nice drinking place but is not really anything out of the ordinary.

I tried to get my 21st birthday party here, but sadly they were all booked up which is no surprise…read morehere at all. It is a great place to have a birthday celebration here. The rooms are slightly large if not a bit out dated but can fit a large number of people in. There is a fully stocked bar and it is really cheap as well for drinks. Also if you book a room for a party you can also order a buffet as well so all your guests have food. It is not much but a good idea. I would say that if you decide to hold a party here, you should book well in advance as places like these go fast!

It's hard to review Rivington Barn without mentioning the reason why weekend finds this place so…read morebusy. Simply, it's set in some of the most beautiful countryside in the country. It attracts motor bikers, not the 'shoot you on the motorway' variety, but the colourful character types. But apart from them, you'll find walkers', runners', hikers' and mountain bikers' next to casual moochers', many of whom have been doing what they love around the Rivvy Hills and are recuperating with a hot drink, scone, meal or some other traditional delight. The barn provides all of this, along with an array of small stalls and, as this is Lancashire, some respite from the rain. There is a small museum next to the barn that is well worth a look. One of the stories it tells is about a plane that crashed during the war, killing all on board, on one of the hills. In the picture attached you can see the monument they erected in their memory. The picture does not do the area justice - get up there and see it. You can buy guide books from the Barn and toddle off on all manner of walks.

Rivington Hall Barn is set in the beautiful surrounding area of Rivington, it is a lovely black and…read morewhite traditional building, full of character and has lots of charm, beautiful to look at inside and out. A pleasure to visit. Inside of the Hall Barn it has lovely beams from the roof and hanging from these are fairy lights that are lit for wedding receptions etc and are a stunning effect. There is a bar serving alcholol at one end, chair and table in the centre and seats around the edges, some standing areas. At the other end is a carvery area and hot and cold food area. On Sundays and Bank Holidays the Barn Hall is a popular destination that attracts bikers and walkers and families etc, the atmosphere is great and the barn opens on Sundays to serve food and drinks. It is a wonderful sight outside on the forecourt of the Barn Hall when the motorbikes are all parked up, they are wonderful machinesamazing to see and such a great atmosphere, very friendly bunch. The food that is served in the Hall Barn is of a very high standard, there are lots of tablesbe there before 2pm for lunch as they stop serving at approximately that time or just later. There are a few stalls inside too on Sundays offering cards, socks, jewellery and pictures to name a few. The toilets are recently updated and are a good facility, ultra modern. The Barn opens on Sundays and Bank Holidays normally but is also available for private functions and sometimes there are dances in the evening or live bands. The Hall Barn is a beautiful venue for a wedding. One of my favourite places to be and so I do Highly recommend Rvington Hall Barn.

This is only the second time I have eaten here, they are very accommodating. We had our engagement party there and they were both helpful and professional. The restaurant occupies the bottom floor with a cocktail bar on the top floor, which has a fantastic lighting and music system. An equally amazing cocktail list to match, my personal personal favourite STRAWBERRY DAIQUIRI, which takes me straight back to my holidays! We ate there Tuesday night with two good friends from Chorley, we had a drink in the bar then made our way to the table. There is a normal menu with starters and mains along with a tapas menu. I had the meatballs off the tapas as my starter, I was not let down by the juicy, succulent homemade meatballs. Main course normally I have a steak when we eat out, I thought I'd break the habit so I ordered chicken breast stuffed with garlic and basil, wrapped in pancetta services with new potato's (which were slightly roasted and amazing) along with a creamy tomato and chorizo sauce. An historical building and one that provides all sorts for the public. The hall has three rooms to…read morerent out to people, whether it be weddings, conferences or productions. They are available with first class service. I once performed here with my school for the mayor, and yes I was nervous but I kept getting lost as the place is soooo big. A map would be helpful! There is also a museum inside this gigantic building. It is the museum of the Manchester Regiment. They have many things on offer and lots of school kids go and have a wander and learn about what their grandad did etc. It is fun to go and look at all the history! The added bonus is that it is free to get in so HIGH FIVE! If you are thinking of having a wedding reception here.
