We had lunch at The Hare & Hounds while on the Isle of Wight visiting my partner's Mum in the New Year. A well know pub locally and particularly popular for it's discounts on meals on a weekday. We were there for Saturday lunch and it was suprisingly quiet (given the low temperatures outside and everyone's need to find somewhere warm and cosy for lunch that isn't their lounge or dining room!)
A large car park at the front of the building was busy, but when inside the restaurant and bar were both very quiet. For food, you choose from the menus at your table and then go to the bar to order and pay. There is a traditional roast is available all week with a two meat carvery on Sundays, along with a Specials board for the rest of the week. Pretty standard pub fare. Between the four of us we ordered the cod and chips, ham and eggs, Lasagne and Steak pudding (both with an accompaniment of veggies). Two portions of fish with the cod & chips made it filling but without any greasiness. The ham and eggs my partner had was ok, but probably not the quality sourced ingredients that the Hare & Hounds claim.
Service was fairly quick (which you would expect when somewhere is so quiet!) and attentive. Exterior is welcoming. Traditional thatched building (which is apparently listed) with an interior to match. The walls and display areas chart local history and stories of historic local murderers and haunted tales!
In the warmer weather you can dine and drink on the patio. The function room to the rear of the building was reserved for a function later on in the day. The only reason we knew this was you have quite a long walk around to the rear of the pub to find the toilets.
Pleasant enough pub, but nothing to write home about. read more
