The glass is so shiny you can even use it as a mirror - be prepared for an annoyed glance for staff members if you so much as breathe on the glass however. The staff (and the pristine cleanliness and obvious wealth) are what deters me from this shop. I have never actually set more than three footsteps down inside due to pure intimidation. The day I did take those few steps I was met with a staff member dolled up to the nines behind the counter. She slowly raised her head, looked me up and down just as slowly and then looked away. The only other person in the shop was a customer who was similarly dressed to the staff member and was being shown a variety of wedding bands by a male staff member. Immediately my jeans and a t-shirt felt out of place and I backtracked hastily out. It shouldn't matter whether or not you can afford the items in a shop, you should never be made to feel so uncomfortable by staff that you actually leave before looking at anything. I have never wanted to go back since. The prices are exorbitant and it is clear they are trying to attract wealthy or upper society customers. There is nothing bad about the shop itself, I just wouldn't recommend it to the average shopper.

So I tried Aurum a little jewellery place that I though would be friendly and affordable. I was wrong in both cases. I was met with a 'I can't be stuffed doing such a pathetic job' attitude, and was told it'll only take a second, so just wait on the side for a bit. After more than just a couple of seconds, it was obvious they didn't know what they were doing. So they asked me to come back in 15 minutes. I came back, they were done, and my watch was already in a plastic bag. They charged me $12, a total rip off. Especially considering when I finally had the time to take it out of the bag one day and just happened to look at the back, it was scratched to death. You could tell they had a difficult time removing the battery. Lucky I was getting another watch soon as that one was a cheap, just for now, watch. Still though, that shoddy work is totally unacceptable.

Chris the owner, did a beautiful job of remodelling my engagement ring which he turned from a plain "nothing to write home about" to a "Showstopper" which has received comments even from strangers. His friendly manner and knowledge put me at ease at each of my appointments at which he was willing to spend as much time as I needed to be comfortable with my choices so I never felt rushed. The added bonus of course is he is a manufacturing jeweller so price is lower because there is no middle-man. I couldn't be happier with my ring and intend to return to have my wedding band remodelled to match.

The second last visit was to have the rings soldered together and when my husband picked them up they came back different. Seems that Chris rodium plated the entire ring so it was now silver not gold. I called and we made an appointment and suprise suprise we were double booked. He told me i would have to come back but after refusing and him realise a scene was about to unfold in front of his new customers, he offered to fix it. Bottom line, ring still not as it was orginally, im not entirely sure its even my ring now, plus i now have to pay someone else to fix up his stuff up cause its to upsetting to deal with him. I also like the buying something that has been locally made and not mass-produced in some factory. Some of Metal Couture's jewelery is over the top, rings like cathedrals, necklaces in the shape of bird skulls, or earrings like chandeliers, but all of it is very finely crafted and incredibly detailed. This is not cheap costume jewelery, like much of the stuff in this style. It is handmade in the studio behind the shop. I was shown studio, it is like an alchemists laboratory with animal skulls and other items. Unfortunately the jeweler, William Llewellyn Griffiths was out on that day, so I wasn't able to see the master at work. The style of their jewelery is reflected in the shop fittings, lots of red velvet drapes and the large gilt frame where the jewelery is displayed. Metal Couture has the aesthetics of the decadence. The silver heart is hallmarked and silver chain is a good weight and thickness. And most importantly C. loves it. It really fits with her style and looks so good on her.

They offer an opal lesson for free which sounded very interesting, and it was fascinating watching opals being cut, shaped and sanded. Prices are excellent for loose stones, and they do a range of gorgeous pendants, rings and other jewellery if you're in the market. However, I absolutely fell in love with the single solid opal I bought, so couldn't be happier. Tempted to go back and choose another!
