I wanted to share the following to urge every single one of you to NEVER, I mean NEVER, rent, purchase, or in any way contribute to this business.
- We rented a 2017 Sylvan Tritoon, a pontoon boat, for four days for our trip.
- On Tuesday, we arrived to Harbor Lights Marina to pick up our Sylvan Tritoon rental, only to be told that the boat we rented was broken and unavailable. Instead, they were going to provide us an alternative boat at the same rate - okay, fine. It was a little frustrating to not be communicated with beforehand, but alas, they gave us a boat.
- My husband and one of his friends began the boat ride back to our rental property only to notice the gas gauge showed empty on the boat. They turned around and returned to the marina to get gas and to ask the dock staff for assistance. They were told that 1) the boat had a full gas tank, and 2) that the gas gauge was broken (newsflash: renting a boat with a broken gas gauge is APPALLING). Listening to the marina, they turned around and proceeded to the rental house.
- They arrived to the house, we went out on the boat for a couple of hours and rode around. We returned a few friends back to the house and a smaller group went back on the boat to go tubing. After 2.5 hours of using the boat - wouldn't you know it - that boat ran out of gas in the MIDDLE OF THE LAKE.
- We called the marina numerous times for assistance where they told us it was an "operator error" and offered little to no help. It poured rain, we tried everything, and we were stranded on the lake for hours. Finally, after the marina refused to provide assistance, we had a friend SWIM TO SHORE to ask a neighbor for help, while those back at the house went door to door asking for a boat tow. Luckily, there are kind people in Sale Creek, Tennessee and they came to our rescue - first to help us troubleshoot the issue, and secondly, to tow us back to our rental property.
- After returning the boat to the rental property, the marina sent a technician out to look at the boat. He spent an hour working on the boat to come to the conclusion that the boat was not out of gas and that it was a larger issue. Upon looking further, he came to the conclusion that the boat was indeed empty of gas, which means the marina did not fill up the gas tank prior to us renting the boat. (Note: this boat holds over 40 gallons of gas, so there is no way humanly possible that we used 40 gallons of gas in the 2.5 hours before the boat broke down). The technician was able to provide a few gallons of gas and instructed us to fill up the boat the next day.
- The following day (Wednesday), we proceeded to a different marina and filled the boat up with gas - over 40 gallons of gas. And guess what - THE GAS GAUGE SHOWED FULL, meaning the gauge did work and all of the hoopla about a broken gas gauge and a full tank was pure laziness and bullshit.
- Luckily, we were able to enjoy the boat for the remaining 3 days, and had a lot of fun. But unfortunately, that's where the good news ends. When we returned the boat to the marina, we requested to be reimbursed for our missed time, our gas expenses, and a portion of our rental fee - not to mention compensation for being literally stranded on a lake for hours.
- The gentleman we spoke to at the marina was incredibly disrespectful and challenging to work with, and ultimately was unable to offer us any kind of compensation or reimbursement. He asked that we call back this week.
- I called today and the ONLY reimbursement the marina will be providing for this experience - is to pay for the gas to fill up the boat when we returned it to them. Which, I don't know how many of you have rented boats or cars, but if it comes to you empty, you return it empty. So bottom line - we had an absolutely terrible experience with this marina, were not compensated - or even apologized to - and wanted to share this experience so no one makes the same mistakes we did. read more
