    San Pedro

Not familiar with rehabs and so on, Lolly and me, new to San Pedro, kept hearing "Beacon House…read moreBoys" they do this and that. There actually seems to be some community pride about Beacon House. So as rehabs go, what is different with this one? Basically, what is different is that it's an "as long as it takes" place. Maybe someone needs more than six weeks or six months or even a couple years. They will not be considered "all done" until they are. We think some people who have spent years of their lives in a blur of substances may need the restrictions that some of the reviewers complain about. We want to honor that they have their experience, their truth, and it may have taken some courage to complain too. How does Beacon House afford to do this? There are fund-raisers and donations and the profits of the thrift store on Pacific, but if you're on government benefits as your "income" you're going to have to think of these government benefits as how you pay your way. As we understand it, except for the expensive, private rehabs, the ones that celebrities or other high income people go to, they all are dependent on government funds in some way, Our understanding is that some people need a very controlled, restrictive environment for a while in order to break the lifestyle that they've had addicted. The reason that they are monitored is so they don't go out and do their stuff, which might have included buying and selling. It's hard going but it's not forever even if it feels like it at first. It may also seem incredibly boring compared to being high. So just in living life we have met some of the men who are or where in the program there. We met a man in midlife who had been thrown out of his family's home because of all the drama he was bringing in there because of his addiction. He spent some time at Beacon House. We actually don't know when or how long he stayed there. Maybe a year and a half ago he was off his substances but he was also depressed and feeling that there was nothing left for him but to go on SSI. "This is it for me," he told us. Well, we caught up with him recently, maybe a year since he thought SSI was it for him and he is back with his family, he is off his substances, he is active in a church of his choosing, and most importantly, he has become an apprentice and is employed, bought a car and is driving, and is so much happier and healthier and fulfilled.

Your support reminds survivors that they are not alone in their journey towards safety and stability. The Power of Prevention Education: One in three women, one in four men, and half of all trans or nonbinary people will experience relationship abuse in their lifetime. Rainbow Services' Prevention and Education program seeks to change societal norms and attitudes regarding intimate partner violence, including domestic, dating, and teen dating violence. Through our educational offerings, we challenge harmful stereotypes and structures that perpetuate violence by increasing the community's awareness and understanding of this pervasive issue while addressing its stigma and hushed nature. We strongly believe in the power of education as a prevention tool to create more informed, supportive communities that actively promote a culture of non-violence. Setting Healthy Boundaries: Their Building Healthy Boundaries presentation aims to increase awareness about teen dating violence while offering solutions and resources to build healthy relationships. Rainbow seeks to accomplish two goals through our Building Healthy Boundaries prevention program: (1) help youth establish healthy relationships through prevention education and (2) provide youth with meaningful resources and tools so they are equipped to independently address unhealthy relationship behaviors. Integrating evidence-based and best-practices to address domestic violence and teen dating violence, this program delivers life-changing education through practice scenarios, experience sharing, and personal discovery facilitated by professional prevention staff. Blending traditional forms of domestic violence and teen dating violence education, Rainbow's program includes innovative techniques to educate youth so that they in turn are able to identify early warning signs of abuse, exercise their voice and choice in their relationships, and provide or seek support to safely address abuse in a relationship. Building Healthy Relationships: Supporting teens experiencing dating abuse is crucial. Rainbow Services offers educational presentations for caregivers/guardians and adults who work with youth to provide them with information to recognize the early warning signs of dating violence, the knowledge to create safe spaces for teens to receive support, and the resources to safely address abuse. Trauma-Informed Care (TIC): Presentation provides an overview of the principles of providing Trauma-Informed Care and examples as to how you can integrate TIC into your service delivery. Domestic Violence 101: Presentation provides a general education about domestic violence, including the dynamics of abuse, impact on the community, connection to homelessness, statistics, and activities such as myth busting. How to Become an Advocate: Presentation provides an overview of our survivor-centered programs, thought leadership within the field of domestic violence, and resources.
