Just moved to Yakima and stopped by the store for some items for home repair. My first impression…read morewas the store was much bigger then other stores I have been in and was instantly drawn to the bbq section which i'm an avid fan of. The bbq section is huge with everything you can think of including beef tallow!! While perusing the section, I was approached by an employee named Zach who asked if he could help me find anything. I asked about Meat Church rub and he took me to where they not only had Meat Church but a huge variety of rubs and sauces. I then asked Zach a question thinking I already knew the answer to. Back story: I'm in the market for a RecTec pellet grill and many Ace stores in the midwest and east coast carry them but I have never seen them in the PNW. I knew that this store didn't have any RecTec's on the floor and assumed they didn't have any but I had to ask, and asked Zach about RecTec's. His eyes lit up and he told me they just had their first order of RecTec's arrive and would be putting them on the floor very soon. Long story short, Zach was incredibly friendly, professional and knowledgeable about all things bbq and low and slow. After asking him for his card, I learned he was the bbq section specialist and I can see why. I truly enjoyed my time speaking to Zach and walked away gaining some new found knowledge from him. This store has everything you can think of and frankly, I have never seen another Ace quite this big. They had everything you could think to include a section for home brewing beer! We are renting temporarily to learn the area before buying a home but trust me when I say that this Ace will be my home store and I will drive 30+ minutes if I have to, to shop at this store. I will soon be buying my RecTec grill from this store and i'm super excited I got to meet Zach.

First the guy…read morepicked a disc that "looked right" and asked if I had the "special tool" to remove the grinding wheel nut. I said how about a crescent wrench? No idea what the "special tool" he would certainly have tried to sell me would have cost. $4.99 for the disc. Got home, found that the nut is part of the wheel so no way to secure the disc which was also too big. Back to store. Same guy picks new, smaller disc and tries to sell me a special nut ($14.99) that needs a special tool ($14.99) to lock it in place. I object and ask for a washer and a 5/8 nut ($1.38) I can tighten with a wrench. Nut and washer show up quickly when they realize I am not a total fool. Quickly, that guy disappears and an older guy (owner?) gets involved and brushes off the fact that the new, smaller disc is only $2.99 (I might be wrong because by now I want out and can tell they are frustrated that I objected to being sold $30 of stuff for a $1.38 nut and washer. I did not get a price adjustment for the smaller disc either. Ok, I like going to C&H and I don't have an attitude but sometimes these guys do. I also like Ace Hardware stores. Just saying.

The owner of this Ace Hardware clearly trains his employees or hires people that know their craft. The physical footprint of this place is much bigger than the previous location down the street, it has expanded sections of everything from grills, to painting supplies on the way to a large section for home breweries. Well it's not something that I do, it certainly isn't getting less popular and it's great to have a spot in town to get everything that you need. If you're looking for "For Sale" signs, those are located in the back right corner of the store. Those are what we came for and those are what we left with! The workers are very helpful and like most of the Ace Hardware is in the area, the employees ready to help you find whatever you need. This is a great use for a building that said open for a long time, and I for one am glad that they're here!

I called and had a hard time getting the saleswoman to say whether or not they carried certain kinds, despite the fact that their website said they did. Finally she directed me to the man in charge, and he told me they had the pullets I wanted. Only after asking exactly how old they were did I find out they were a little over two weeks old, but "very hardy". Of course they weren't hardy enough to put outside in the coop yet, but he was willing to call them pullets and say they were really hardy, just not hardy enough to be outside or without a heat lamp! That's not hardy, by the way. The second time I tried to buy something from them was when I wanted to make a fence using hardware cloth to protect my garden from gophers. They were unable to sell me the size and length I needed, and didn't offer to order it for me. I said I would look on Amazon and they said OK and hung up. Why don't farm stores sell things farmers need in Yakima? Why is Amazon the only place you can find things like basic fencing or decent chicken feed? Why don't any stores like this sell actual pullets instead of just chicks? Did you know not everyone that has a chicken coop outside has a place to raise chicks inside?

I'm disappointed that they . I'm building some raised garden beds and decided to check out my options. Upon walking in, I was greeted by the amazing smell of popcorn! They've got a little machine with some delicious popcorn to snack on! Major plus for this guy - I love that stuff. Anywho - back to the lumber - my options were Douglas fir-larch, pressure treated lumber, and cedar. The douglas fir-larch is around $0.65 / LF. Pressure treated was about $1.65/LF, and cedar was around $3.30/LF. Based on the fact that I would have to seal the regular wood, I decided to go with 12' pressure treated. I'm a fan of local business, but prices have to be competitive. In this case, prices for a 2x8x12' was about 15% higher than at one of the big box retailers. In general, that seems like an approximate premium that you may pay here over the home improvement juggernauts. I was assuming that Hellisen only sold lumber, but they have quite a few other items. You can find a lot of wordworking tools and fasteners, as well as basic construction materials - but, mostly things that are wood related. If you like supporting local business and don't mind a small premium, Helliesen is a great option for lumber in Yakima. If they were open on saturdays, I'd buy a lot more lumber from here!
