To start, my rudder had sheered from the post so got towed into point hudson, I had scheduled a haul out for that Monday so spent the weekend on it, Monday comes and Jeremy tells me "oh I thought we said Wednesday" shrugged then went back to the computer, Generally, a Confirmation email and /or phone call with the scheduled haul out would've been sent. Wednesday, June 10th comes, get the boat to the haul-out station and half way up both owners Jeremy and Chris tell me "oh yeah, we require a $6000 deposit in case you abandon the boat" Really got me by the short ones here; My boat/home is in the air needing repairs and you decide NOW to tell me $6000 is owed before it's even up? Not to mention scratching the HELL out of my hull paint. I ask for the 2 week bottom paint package......6DAYS LATER they got it sanded and painted. I opted to repair the rudder myself because I was quoted a minimum of $5,000 but luckily years of sailing and working on ships, yachts and sailboats; I know my capabilities. With rudder repaired and back on I knoticed some paint was flaking and they swore they did 2 coats but ODDLY out of the 3 gallons of bottom paint I gave them only 1 was used and it wasn't fully empty. Again, YEARS of doing this work I know a 40 foot sailboat needs 2 gallons of bottom paint so the mystery is either, Sea Marine is pulling the sails over my eyes, my years of doing this work and math are liars OR we discovered a Bottom paint equivalent of Hanukkah oil that only One gallon was able to do 480 square feet TWICE. I'm sadly going to choose option one because After showing both Owners the blister and chipped paint that wasn't sanded well or feathered I go inside to fix a few things and over hear Jeremy tell his painter "Just throw some paint on it, I'm tired of this". Are you? Because I'm pretty tired of Having No communication through this whole thing, the bullshit excuse "we tried calling but straight to voicemail", I can get signal 30 nautical miles off the coast, pretty sure you can reach me out on Marrowstone. Safe assumption, I won't return here for work to get done which sucks cause they were convenient and that's really about it save yourself the hassle, go to the main Marina/boat yard, they'll allow you to do your own bottom work cause apparently can't even trust contractors. So I will bite the almost $5000 tab for shoddy bottom work and Not contacting me until "Oh we're done" with the blister still open and not even sanded, but I'll make that back the first week of sailing so they can have that but my Review remains Permanently.

We brought them a well maintained boat with no known transmission or drivetrain issues. They replaced our engine mounts but did not perform the alignment in the water afterward. Less than 20 operating hours later, our port transmission failed while we were underway in the middle of Puget Sound with our 3-year-old and newborn baby onboard. What followed was more than $25,000 in damage, repairs, towing, haul-out, inspections, and expert review. Multiple surveyors and marine professionals have since confirmed our findings: the failure was tied to misalignment after the engine mount work. This did not just cost us money. It took away over a year of boating with our family. We tried repeatedly to work with Your Boat Shop and hoped Dirk would take accountability, or at minimum engage in understanding what happened. Instead, Dirk declined to participate in the investigation and ignored our calls. The burden of investigating and repairing the damage fell entirely on us. This was also not an isolated concern. We had referred friends to Your Boat Shop, and their boat was also damaged after work performed there. They ultimately had to have the work corrected by CSR Marine, over $10,000 in damages. Mistakes can happen. What matters is how a business responds when they do. In our case, the response was deeply disappointing. I strongly urge other boat owners not to be fooled by the great reviews or attractive pricing. Based on our experience, I would not recommend Your Boat Shop for engine mount, alignment, shaft, transmission, or other drivetrain-related work. The risk and cost are far too high.

I hired Your Boat Shop to replace the engine mounts on my motor vessel. Less than 20 operating…read morehours later, my port transmission (w/ 1,000 hours) failed while underway, ultimately resulting in more than $25,000 in repairs. What makes this especially concerning is that before the engine mount replacement, a pre-purchase survey and gearbox oil analysis found no evidence of transmission distress, abnormal wear metals, drivetrain vibration, or shaft-related issues. The transmission failure occurred only after Your Boat Shop performed the mount replacement. Following the failure, Harbor Marine, a ZF-authorized service facility, documented approximately 0.010" of coupling misalignment and found the port shaft seized in the cutlass bearing. An independent SAMS-accredited marine surveyor later documented extensive internal transmission damage and concluded that the transmission-to-shaft coupling was grossly out of alignment following the engine mount replacement (SAMS report attached). The surveyor's opinion was that the failure sequence was precipitated by shaft misalignment after the recent mount replacement. What concerns me most is that this was not the only alignment issue associated with this shop. During my claim investigation, I reviewed documentation from CSR Marine involving another vessel serviced by Your Boat Shop. CSR found significant engine misalignment and concluded that the shafts appeared to have been reinstalled without properly aligning the engines, requiring substantial corrective work--over $10,000. CSR images and cost to repair attached. Equally disappointing was the response after the failure. Your Boat Shop was notified and given the opportunity to participate in determining the root cause but declined to become involved. The burden of investigating the failure fell entirely on me. Although my insurance carrier could not cover the loss because the work predated my policy, they still paid for towing, haul-out, and independent expert inspections needed to determine what happened. A routine engine mount replacement was followed by documented shaft misalignment, a seized cutlass bearing, catastrophic transmission damage, and more than $25,000 in repair costs. Based on my experience, the independent findings, and the shop's unwillingness to participate in the investigation, I have no confidence in the workmanship or accountability demonstrated by Your Boat Shop or Chris Tomlinson Marine Services and would not trust either company with any work on my vessel.

It turned out to be a great referral. I had done a lot of research on my own as the sailboat had an unusual thru-hull configuration. Brian was thoughtful and respectful when working with me, even though I'm a girl and don't know boats. He actually complimented me on my research and said he learned something by working on this strange configuration. He's a straight-shooter, no BS, no attitude, no drama kinda guy. He replaced the old weird volcano thru-hulls including relocating some of them to more convenient locations. He did a swell job on the bottom paint. He was easy to work with. And his prices were fair and reasonable. If you have a weird situation or just need the usual bottom paint, definitely go talk to him. Another BIG perk is he has a space at the Port of Everett which is less per day than the Port's spaces -- that means that if you need to do something to the boat while it's out of the water you can utilize his scaffolding.

He really listened as I informed him of the saga that was this engine as we assessed what had not yet been worked on. After replacing the water separator he got to work on the carburetor and fuel pump. Last summer, Justin at Port Townsend Rigging performed a rig inspection for our 30' cutter…read moresailboat. He said the rigging wire was showing signs of age, which was over 20 years of age, and he recommended it be replaced if we planned to go offshore. I scheduled the rigging wire replacement with Port Townsend Rigging for early March 2025. They performed the work while the boat was in the water at their dock in Boat Haven. Justin and his team completed the work in a couple of weeks. I am delighted with their work. The work was thorough and professional. Tensioning the whisker stays of the bowsprit is a challenge because of the close fitting gammon iron. It's easy to damage the bowsprit paint if not tensioned correctly. Justin's careful attention to detail paid off because he insured the whisker stays were tensioned evenly so as to keep the bowsprit centered while tensioning. It was also easy to work with Sarah on obtaining an estimate, scheduling and final invoicing. The invoice was higher than the estimate partly because I had requested the running back stays and topping lift rope rigging be replaced, which were not on the estimate. Sarah helped me understand the other additional costs that were not included the estimate, which involved replacing the whisker stays and bob stay wire. The estimate and final invoice were close if the additional costs were not factored in. I have worked with Port Townsend Rigging since we launched our cutter 20 years ago when they installed the mast and the original rig. I have used them ever since, and I have always be happy with the services they provide. I highly recommend them.
