Best bite of food I've had in a long time, their skewers are absolutely insane. I would literally…read moreswim across the Halifax harbour for one of these kebabs and I'm not even joking.

For years I have been a drunken fan of Rocky's amazing pork kebabs. It took a while for me to…read morerealize that there is an actual restaurant behind that late night BBQ oasis of meat on a stick and even longer for me to go there, but earlier this summer, I finally corrected that. ASAP may be the definition of a hole in the wall, but once you enter its small door and go downstairs, it's actually kinda nice. With arched doorways and trees and plants, it's quite welcoming and more upscale looking than you would expect for a lunchtime buffet. After my friend and I sit down and order drinks, we meander up to the buffet counter where a friendly lady describes our options and serves up what we request. I get a plate piled high with fried rice and noodles, a ginger chicken and sweet potato dish, pork and chickpeas dish, spring roll, sweet potato patty and dumplings. I try to feel like less of a piggy by assuring myself that one no eats light at a buffet. It works...a bit. The food is a nice change from the Chinese buffets that I'm used to. The dominant flavour of the rice and noodles is garlic, fortunately I'm a big garlic fan, although I prefer my noodles to not be chopped and be long and more manageable with chopsticks. The ginger chicken and sweet potato was a unique take on the often bland and generic sweet and sour chicken, with big chunks of sweet potato and pineapple in it. The spring roll is crisp and fresh, although the contents mostly pull out in a couple bites. Being a huge fan of potato patties for breakfast (a package permanently resides in my freezer), the handmade sweet potato patty is a fried disk of taste bud win.The dumplings are probably my favourite part of my sizable meal - they have a great pork flavour that is complimented by water chestnuts and green onion and have a nice soft texture. Capped off with some mango ice cream, my belt was strained to its limits and it is times like this I'm glad I don't have a car and am forced to walk off the food baby that was residing in my belly. Judging by the number of reviews for this place, ASAP is a place that flies under the radar for more people than just myself, and with the delicious and unique foods that they have, they definitely deserve to get more recognition.....ASAP. *tumbleweed blows by*

McJolly Filipino Fast Food - Combo Meal #3 - fried chicken with rice, corn and gravy

Filipino food is probably my favourite international cuisine, with its delicious mix of Asian and…read moreSpanish flavours, and while their fast food is much more American-ized than their more traditional stuff, it's its own little niche that deserves some love too! McJolly was started by Filipino immigrants who became restauranteurs in Halifax and takes its name from two of the most popular fast food chains in the Philippines. No guesses are needed for the prefix, but the second part may be less familiar for Maritimers - Jollibee. They're only just starting to expand in Canada, with about 30 locations across the country, and are known for their assorted menu of fried chicken, burgers, and Filipino-style spaghetti. The menu at McJolly is much the same, and I had the fried chicken section in my sights. I went for Comb Meal #3 - fried chicken, rice and your choice of coleslaw or corn (I chose the latter). I thought I was getting a lighter meal than some of the combos that have both rice and spaghetti, but when my tray was in front of me, the *four* pieces of chicken (two drumsticks and two thighs, go Team Dark Meat!) said otherwise! Hilariously, I was in a bit of a rush to get to a job interview, so I had to inhale this meal and couldn't quite give it the attention it deserved, but there were really only four different items - the chicken, steamed rice, corn and gravy. I won't play coy and leave it until the end of the review - the chicken was awesome! The coating was super crisp, and the meat within was moist and tender. I do wish Filipino fried chicken had more seasoning to it, but hey, well executed fried chicken is still a wonderful thing! The gravy had a pleasant peppery kick to it, and I slathered it over both the chicken and the rice. The small cup of corn was a bit of an afterthought, and I probably should have gone with the coleslaw on the off chance that it would be a vinegar-based dressing to have something to cut through the rich chicken, but it's likely mayo-based anyway. I love that Filipino food has really been blowing up in Halifax the past few years, and I'll definitely be doing a deep dive into it all, including a return visit to McJolly for the spaghetti next time!

Well, in searching for my little meat man amongst the yelp database, I was thoroughly saddened to…read morefind a "your search returned no results." So I added this business, only to find out I can't find much for contact info for them except for: meet them anywhere from 12 am- 4 am at 5237 blowers. All booze ingested and post 2 hours downtown would also hit the money. I've reared myself away from your typical slice of pizza at pizza corner and into Rocky's amazing "meat sticks." Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy a good slice from time to time. I prefer to call them sticks but I suppose he does have shishkabob written on the side of his cart. Nuzzled into an entrance way just down from Willy's, the smell of their sausages and kabobs is like a sensory overload for half, large, and extra largely snapped individuals from thurs-sat. Cool part is they are super cheap and leave you with less of a fat and carb induced hangover the next day. 6 bucks for 3 sticks and a lot of protein. The cool part if you can slap them in a bun and take away the stick, or you can naw off the stick as you walk (me). They are marinated and cooked to perfection. I swear, they get me every time. I think I go out for the sole purpose of getting a stick. ALL HAIL THE MEAT MAN.
