At the time of this post, he's now 3 years old and in preschool. Teachers = amazing. The teachers have made--most importantly--him feel comfortable and respected. Every day at pick up, all of the kids are happy and playing. I can only speak for my son--he does not want to leave because he's having fun with his friends. This is the general sentiment among the kids per the parents. Curriculum: Experiential. The infant/toddler room introduces textures, encourages babies to crawl and climb, they go on nature walks where the teachers describe what's in the world around them, and water play in the summer. In transition, they have science where the toddlers plant a garden, care for it and harvest it (of course they try the fruit and veggies they sow!). They've also implemented Spanish and dance, in addition to the regular curriculum. And, a parent-involved field trip is made to Smith Playground. In preschool, they continue Spanish and dance and take a weekly field trip to a local music school for music. My son is about 2.5 months into preschool and I know there's more great stuff to come. And we can't forget to mention the Kim Selman Art Show! Come June, all of the walls to the ceilings are covered with works of art from ALL classes. Community: The founder and director has structured Pooh Corner to be community-centric. Each class has a Fall and Spring social, as well as an all-school potluck picnic, woodchip day (to refill the playground) and the end of the "school" year teacher appreciation celebration. Pooh Corner has a well developed program to bring new families and current families together. There are many things I like about this school--the love and patience shown by the teachers, the intentional community-building, the inclusive atmosphere--but what really sets it apart to me is thought and care that goes into the design of the educational experience. I am a teacher, and I think a lot about how an educator's vision affects how students learn. My experience has been that many daycare centers either lack any educational vision at all, or else teach a "canned" curriculum devised by an institution outside the school. Not so at Pooh Corner. The educational director works with the teachers to develop a curriculum that is appropriate for THESE SPECIFIC KIDS and reflects their interests. They do special projects based on whatever the kids are excited about--my son's class did a project on shoes, and then another on "gravity" (things going up and falling down). The kids get exposure to lots of different kinds of learning experiences. They have a weekly science class that involves gardening, composting, and bugs. This is not just "experiential" science either--they collect data on their plants (I don't think they call it that, but that's what it is) and compare the ones growing inside and outside! There are options like Spanish class and dance class as well. This is all in the context of lots of free play with a great outdoor playspace, as well as time for physical skills, reading, letters, and numbers. However even the letters and numbers are incorporated thoughtfully into the things that the kids are interested in. The school works as a team with families on big changes like potty training--it made it so easy for us, I think he went from diapers to underpants in two days. They also encourage kids to do as much as possible by themselves, which helps them to be independent.

I had previously tried emailing Lightbridge to confirm and received no response. I finally had time to call and they let me know that they do not, in fact, have room for our twins. We are starting the daycare search over, which will likely be absolutely impossible at this point, considering there are two of them. We're left without child care, with twins in the NICU, incredibly stressed out. Do yourself a favor and get in writing that they will have a spot for your child so you don't end up like us.

Regarding the teachers, my children love all them but I have a particular fondness for Miss Tiff, Miss Britt and Miss Ty and while I am new to her, my three year old who can be particular about who she interacts with, loves Ms. Emily, so I do, too. Ms Tiff and Ms. Britt were excellent at detailing the kids' days and their projects were plentiful. They really are a valuable asset to the center! Regarding why, I am only giving 4 stars, there are minor things that I would like to see in other classrooms, but they are opinion based and I will keep them to myself -- but overall, I am happy with my decision to place my children here.
